I will be hunting mostly fresh water and just wading for now. The lakes around here are pretty murky for snorkeling and I am not SCUBA certified yet. I'd like to detect some area lakes before they freeze over.... Are any of them VLF or are they all PI?
Looking for some input for a new book project . . . . . . (no replies)

Many of you know me . . . either having met me over the years or through my articles in Lost Treasure Magazine going back 25+ years, diving magazines or previous books.

Well, I in the process of pulling another book project together which will not be brand-specific but rather cover the hobby in a way that differs from past books . . . . what I was hoping some of the Findmall members might be able to provide are:

1) Find Photos: People like to see what you can find out there and there have been some super finds posted here and elsewhere. In all of my past books a big piece has always been the photos of finds along with a short description of the find details (what they find is, type of site it came from, detector used, etc.). If you have a some finds you would like to share with other treasure hunters worldwide, I'd be interested in seeing if I can work the photo(s) into the book and ensure that you receive credit with a byline.

2) Brand-specific Tips: While the book is not going to be brand-specific; i.e., the title will cover the hobby not a particular model, there will be brands covered and having specific tips on brands / models are being sought. Do you have a trick for "super tuning" your favorite detector? Do you have a technique that lets you hit those deep coins in hot ground? Do you have a particular coil that works better than the stock coil for certain applications? Are there accessories that really boost performance? Is there a particular model from your favorite brand that stands the test of time and is a "killer" for your style / type of hunting? Any tip or technique along these lines would be welcomed and again, full credit will be given . . . . . care for some "notoriety" among your peers?

If you would like to submit any examples of this information, it would really be appreciated and the final product will be more interesting and comprehensive for it . . . . .

If you have any questions on what information I'm looking for, you can either send me a PM through Findmall or drop me a direct E-Mail at 2009Book@sabischbooks.com.
Newbie from Texas with some questions...... (10 replies)

Hey guys,
My name is Andy, and I live in the Texas Hill Country, and have been lurking here for some time. I have been contemplating getting into metal detecting for sometime now, and have been researching quite a few different units. I finally settled on DetectorPro, not only for the value for $$$, but because of the electronics being housed in the earphones, just seems very practical and innovative. Anyway, I am trying to decide what model to buy for my first unit, and it's between the Wader, and the PI. I will be hunting a pretty wide range of terrain, and I need something that will work effectively in a variety of environments, and I was hoping you guys would be willing to dispense some sage advice.
I live in the hIll Country of Texas, within walking distance of a very heavily used recreational river/lake. The section of river near my house is all less than 3-4 feet deep, and very heavily traveled by swimmers, so I would really like to get into the water and see what's down there. I have lived around here a long time, and NEVER seen anyone detect down there. Additionally, I would also like to hunt the dry land adjacent to the lake/river as well.
And finally I spend A LOT of time down on the Gulf Coast, and have access to a ton beach and shallow saltwater. So I really need something that works on land, and in salt and fresh water. I am really leaning towards the wader, but the PI looks attractive because of it's depth capabilities. I understand with the PI, I'll dig a lot more unwanted stuff, but I am not at all that deterred by digging some extra trash to gain the depth.

Any help you guys would provide would be much appreciated, and thanks in advance for sharin so much info. on this forum!

Best Regards,

Andy Dear

Managed to drag myself out of bed at 6am Sunday morn. It was sure cold out.....dressed warm, took along my shorts, booties and a towel.
Wasn't sure if I was going to enter the water, so I hunted the dry beach sand. Jeepers my hands were freezing, should have taken gloves. Water temp was
warm enough to go into. But, not at that point, just to damn cold out. Figured maybe after the sun came out and warmed things up a bit.

Hunted the dry sands for about 1 1/2 hours and found the bulk of everything pictured along with lots of deck screws and roofing nails, sterling ring. Probably from the board walk, stairs and the bath house that was built. Nothing was found more than 5-6" deep, seems to be about my wife's Waders depth limit.

Sun came up warmed up some , slight breeze, changed over to my shorts and entered the water. About another hour managed to hunt all the water area.
A few coins, a sterling butterfly ring, a marble, religious key nails, bottle caps.

I did notice after about 45 minutes water hunting, the Wader sounded like the batteries were getting low. Went back to dry beach hunting and the Wader still sounded like low batteries. Hmmmm, the batteries were brand new fresh set right out of the pack. Just wondering if there maybe a coil connector problem. Will wait for several days and take the Wader out again.

Maiden voyage with the HH PI today (3 replies)

Took my new HH PI out today to the beach today. It was slim pickings as me and my 2 hunting partners didn't get much. Still, a nice day to get out as the sun was shining and there were some nice sites laying around !

The PI ran super smooth with the 8 inch coil. I had it set a hair below the highest frequency, volume 3/4 and threshold where I heard a nice steady hum and there was not a false signal nor threshold warble when entering the water or when the waves crashed on the coil or moved over it. At the highest freq/delay setting, it was a bit unstable when hitting the suds, but settled down when the coil was submerged, and also ran nice and smooth on the wet sand at the highest setting. I was happy with that. Even when I was scrubbing the sand and accidently hitting the sand with my coil, the machine did not false. Big plus.

I got some clad, the usual iron junk, some deep bottle caps and a nice pair of stainless steel needle nose pliers, which I will happily use when surf fishing ! Those pliers were DEEP ! I hit a deep pull tab and it sounded really nice...a good sign. When I hit the deep pull tab ( first tab of the day), it was a sound I did not hear all day, so I knew it was something of interest and not iron or wire. Dug 3 or 4 deep tabs that hit hard. The bottle caps are still really tough to not dig...some sound really sweet.

Swung for about 3 hours, no arm fatigue what so ever. One of the best things about that 8 inch coil is that I can stick it down into th hole and sweep along the sides of it and it pin points dead on. All targets today were scooped up right where it pin pointed and I did no lose any targets.

I also, by the end of the day, started to figure out how the wire and deeper iron was sounding. It did not make that clear, crisp sound and really sounded washed out.

Some really deep pieces of iron and wire, the threshold on those targets was weaker, then stronger during different sweep angles while the deeper non- ferrous targets seemed to have the same amplitude in the threshold when sweeping from different angles. Maybe it was me, but it seemed the garbage iron and wire targets that were really deep had a different effect on the threshold than the deep non-ferrous targets. Also, the shallow iron bits and nails did double hit at a certain point when I swept the target from all angles, but I was digging everything to make sure.

It seems easier to hear the changes/nuances of the threshold sound and size up the targets with the smaller coil than the larger 11 inch open ( from what I can remember), but I know I will order the larger coil soon because I am a detector junky !

Can't wait to go back out again. I think I just missed the prime time 2 days ago since today it looked like sand was moved back in. My friend, who went with me today, has gone out the past few days and gotten about 60-70 coins and other targets each day, and today all we managed from the 3 of us was about 25 coins.

No pics...I think we all know what beat up zincs, a few green quarters and lots of iron junk and rusty bottle caps look like ! Maybe I will post a pic of the pliers ! HA !

JC

5 trips with the DP PI and $502 in GOLD (3 replies)

I found another big 18k gold ring today with my PI. That's four gold rings in 5 trips as well as one silver ring and dozens of coins.
I'm having a ball. I was in a place with lots of iron as well as zinc pennies today, so after a couple of hours and about 2 dozen bobby pins I did change to my CZ-5. I didn't dig zinc pennies or iron. I found several coins, but no gold with the CZ.

I went to the web site:

http://www.dendritics.com/scales/metal-calc.asp?WeightU=1&Units=g&Alloy=9K&PrOzt=&CurrencyN=USD&Markup=0

and put the weight and purity of the rings and it came out to $502 worth. Yee-Haw!!

I can see now that I need a Wader or Pirate Pro for these trashy places. I usually only wade up to my waist.

Which one do y'all suggest.

Thanks,
TheHawg

Tot lot Bonanza !! (3 replies)

Decided to hit the tot lots this morning, with the Detector Pro, before it got too hot. Headed for one across town and was blocked by a train across the tracks. Went to two other crossings and they were blocked by the same train. It wasn't moving one inch. I remembered a new tot lot closer to my house, so headed over there. Must have been fate or the detecting gods that lead me there. As soon as I started I was getting signals everywhere. I don't think anyone else has been hunting it. Found more coins than I think I have ever found at a single tot lot. About cleaned it out by the time the sun got hot enough to make detecting uncomfortable. Here is my loot from that lot.

Another short Tot Lot hunt with the Detector Pro (2 replies)

Got up this morning and decided to hit a couple of tot lots before the heat set in. Not a lot left from other hunters. It is getting harder to find one that hasn't been pounded to death. Still, a great way to spend the morning. The heart has to be one of the smallest pieces that I have found in a while. Chased it all over the place before I finally found it. Here is this mornings loot. Not a lot, but fun anyway.
