(And like her mother and grand mother) A couple months ago she was visiting from Alberta for a couple days and had them call several of us old friends so she could put on a huge Easter meal for us! That included about 3 courses including roast Turkey, rack of Lamb, barbecued Oysters, and salads that were a meal by themselves, also to die for deserts! Shooed her Grandma out of the kitchen mostly and also managed to help Grand dad with outside chores to boot.

They just left today for Alberta to go to her high school graduation.

:usaflag: Little Gracie stole my heart!

As a plumbing repairman I have had a wide variety of experiences over the past 38 years some I can share and some I dare not as the people are still around and I wouldnt want to hurt their feelings.

Three weeks ago I responded to a call to install a couple of toilets for a young family who were new customers. When I arrived I met the young wife/Mom of the family and was introduced to her beautiful 6 Month old daughter who lit up like a neon sign when I smiled at her and her almost four year old sister who is beautiful, wide eyed, chatty and exceptionally bright.

Her Mom asked if little Gracie would be in my way if she watched me work and I assured her that as a Grampa for six active youngsters I would have no problem with the child watching. As I worked I chatted with the little girl and learned that she was amazingly articulate for her age and perceptive in her observations of the work I was doing. (Its not rocket science Ya know!) She called me Plumber when she had a question or wanted to make a comment and once or twice she even handed me a part I was reaching for.

At one point I had to light my plumbers torch and I explained what I was doing and how there might be a small pop when the torch was lit. She watched with wide eyes as I completed the work I was doing and after scheduling a tub faucet install with her Mom for the following week I went on my way to my next job with a wave to Gracie and a bye Plumber from her.

When I arrived for the next late morning appointment Gracie was at nursery school until noon and I found as I got into the job that I needed a few fittings that required a trip to a supply house not far away. Later about the time I was finishing the last few adjustments to the new faucet Gracie arrived and chatted away until I finished and carrying my tool bucket, went downstairs to discuss the work with her Mom and to schedule another visit for the following week to install a faucet in the master shower and replace part of a tub drain and replace a broken plastic drain fitting in a wall.

When I turned to leave Gracie ran up to me and almost wrapped her arms around my legs, but stopped short when she realized the surface of my plumbers trousers was soiled. She looked up at me with her sweet innocent blue eyes and told me, Plumber, I love you!

I thanked her and replied with a smile that I love everyone and told her Mom that Gracie had touched me where I live as I placed my hand over my heart. I must admit to being a bit misty eyed as I left for my next job.

Yesterday I saw Gracie again briefly toward the end of the work I was doing, because her Mom had taken her to the beach and when she returned she watched as I put the finishing touches on the shower faucet. As I put my equipment away and cleaned up the work area Gracie told me, Plumber, I really like you. warming my heart again.

Its rare for a child to stay around and interact for the length of time Gracie did and for me to be so impressed with the active mind of such a small child. I complemented her Mom on how bright her daughter is and thanked her for allowing Gracie to watch me work as it was fun chatting with her.

I left that home knowing what a rare gift I had received in being able to share quality time with this child. Life as a plumber is not all filth and drudgery and after all these years I still find interacting with people I meet, young and old, to be the best part of the job.

Respectfully submitted,

CJ

Re: :usaflag: Christmas Day On The Connecticut Shore!!

As per usual I checked the "on line" weather report this AM before my morning walk on the beach.

Current 17 Knot winds out of the W/SW, 52F temp and rain were enough to put a damper on my morning, but I know that sometimes the reports are wrong and/or things can change fairly quickly along the shore.

After my morning coffee and C. roll I donned foul weather gear and started my walk into an E/SE wind (?) at about 20Knots and a light drizzle!

Since I hadn't been able to walk the Western end of "my beach" yesterday I started out in that direction this AM.

The snow is nearly all gone after the overnight rain and warmer temps. exposing lots of trash for removal.

At the extreme west end of the beach I discovered that someone had removed the lobster pot I wrote about in a past post.

There was no sign that it had ever been there and at first I thought it was buried, but there hadn't been enough sand movement to cover it.

One of life's mysteries!

I decided to make a complete job of it and covered the entire beach picking up several pieces of aluminum cans and bottles along with the usual mono-line and plastic trash.

Near the eastern end of my beach combing the wind stopped for a short time and started blowing from the W/SW!!

Only a few hours off, otherwise not a bad forecast!

I found a syringe with a needle (covered) sitting high up on the wet sand where the waves had tossed it.

It's disturbing to say the least to find these things out there, but at least I can properly dispose of them.

By the time I got back to my van almost three hours had passed and I was starting to get damp from the rain and fog that was getting heavier.

The swells were still a little too rough for water hunting, but I will keep monitoring conditions while these temps are not severe just in case opportunity presents itself.

Thanks for reading!

Best to You All,

CJ
