Golden uMax coils comparison (no replies)

Air tested a mans medium weight 14k gold wedding band and a Mercury dime for maximum depth and for max tone ID depth. Audio loudness was good, not whisper signals. Disc at 0, Sens set past 10 (at end of orange strip). Concentric coils except for 8"DD and 3x18". All the coils did better on the gold ring than on the Mercury dime, but the ring is bigger too. MAX DEPTH is a good signal but without the correct tone. MAX ID DEPTH is a good signal with the correct ID tone in about 4 sweeps. The 3 x 18" coil is one I use a lot, especially in tot lots.

I was told that it would work on the Cibola also. On the Tejon I get 12" airtest on a CW Eagle Coat Button, but on the Cibola (which I just got) the best it would do is 6-8 inches. Maybe because of the freq difference between the two. The Tejon at 17 kHz vs the Cibola at 14 kHz. Test was disc set at iron and the Cibola was supertuned. The signal on the Cibola was a broken short tone, where as the Tejon was a nice and smooth tone...........MO

DigDug1228 ... Here are my responses to several of your recent posts. (1 reply)

This is easier than responding on each of your posts.

Quote
DigDug1228
Would the 4.0 or the 5.75 be a help in the tot lots, or would it be a waste of money?

Either of these coils would be better in tot lots than the standard 8" or 8X9 coils Tesoro uses ... unless you're hunting the very open playground spaces. For workign in and around the play structures, both are good considerations. Definitely, not a waste of money.

Having used all Tesoro coils and virtually every Tesoro that they've made for land searches, I favor the 5¾" coil over the 4". Actually, I used to dump the stock 8" or 8½" or 8X9, depending upon the model, and opt for a 7" concentric coil on a Tesoro. I have been for 26++ years, but, today, I am really tugged between picking the 7" concentric or the 5¾" concentric.

Quote
DigDug1228
Would I be better to buy a Campadre?

I don't think so. While I like the Compadre in general, in is mainly due to the quieter, cleaner working Discriminate circuitry when hunting dense nail and small iron trashed sites. However, the Silver µMAX allows quick search coil changes, a toggle to switch between a variable ED-120 Disc. function and a motion Disc. that accepts almost All Metals. It also has the variable Sensitivity control.

Quote
DigDug1228
Also any ideas on coils to go deeper for coins?

If a site is CLEAN, both ferrous and non-ferrous targets, so as to NOT have any target masking issues, then a stock coil up to something in the 10" range will generally get the best depth on smaller coin-sized targets. If a site is trashy, and you don't intend to remove the masking trash, then pick a decent smaller coil and work it slowly and methodically to "cherry pick" the most probably coins from the site. Depth, however, will be impaired by surface/shallow targets.

Quote
DigDug1228
If I buy one i don't want to send it back for retune so what coils work best out of the box?

If you do not want to have to open a detector up and mess with an internal trimmer, or ship your detector and coils off to the factory or a reputable dealer/user for proper calibration, then you should own a model that has manual Ground balance. A Bandido, Bandido II, Bandido II µMAX, or Eldorado µMAX, to name a few.

A coil could be bad "out of the box' or good, but if it and the detector are not properly balanced to the environment, you're not going to get peak performance. If the GB is too negative, you can have severe falsing. If way too positive, you might lose high-conductive targets, like silver dollars, halves, and more.

Quote
DigDug1228
Compadre 5.75 vs Silver Umax with 5.75, are they the same in the tot lot? Which is better?

They can be quite similar in tot lot, but the edge goes to the Compadre if there is a lot of small iron (hairpins, paperclips, etc, and to the Silver µMAX for depth of detection and versatility.

Quote
DigDug1228
What depth can i expect from the 4.0 and the 5.75 on a Silver Umax?

It depends on the medium in the tot lot, as well as the presence of masking targets, etc., but basically the depth is comparable with the diameter of a coil, and possibly a bit more relative to smaller coils.

Quote
DigDug1228
Why did Tesoro pick 10khz for the silver, why not 12khz? I've heard that 12khz is a little better for small gold. So why put the silver at 10khz?

Forget the operating frequency. There is textbook "theory" and then there is actual in-the-field performance. As far as Tesoro models are concerned, the early motion-based discriminators operated at 12.5 kHz, and most of the Tesoro/Tesoro-made models have operated from 9.6 kHz for the Troy Shadow X2 (a slight shift from the Silver Sabre µMAX it stemmed from), to the 15 kHz of the Golden Sabre Plus. Certainly most operate in the 10-12 kHz range and there is very, very, VERY little difference in performance between them on conductive targets.

Most of the difference in performance from one model to the next has to do with the range of discrimination, the as well as other circuitry designs. You could even include the audio frequency since some of us don't hear target responses as well from a lower-tone audio Tesoro model. Most of my searches in gold jewelry potential sites in the past quarter of a century have been done with Tesoro's that worked in the 10 kHz to 12 kHz range, or White's models that operate in 6.59 kHz. Earlier, when most of the White's models were the four-filter, faster-sweep designs, it was the Tesoro detectors that scored most of my low-conductive gold jewelry. But after using White's 2-filter, quick-response Detectors mode and more for the last half of that period, working at the same 6.59 kHz frequency, these various Classic series model have produced perhaps 85% of my gold jewelry.

Location is most important, and keeping a low discriminate setting is #2. It matters very little whether your Tesoro choice is a ±10 kHz or or ± 12 kHz operating model as it does the rest of the circuitry design, settings, and coil choice. Most of the time I search with a smaller-than-stock coil. An exception would be the Compadre because either the earlier versions with the 7" coil, or the current offering that sports the 5¾" coil, can work well. The stock 8" or 8X9, depending upon the particular model chosen, are OK search coils for open-area hunting or sites with a lower target count.

While Tesoro's do work pretty good in trashy sites with these coils, and certainly you can't argue against the well known quick-response/fast-recovery circuitry design of most Tesoro's, I personally favor a smaller-than-stock coil for most hunting. This is especially true if working highly trashed sites, places with a lot of iron, or getting in and around parking meters, under bleachers, in and around brush, and close to metal pipes & structures in tot lots. The 4" is a good coil, but really just a bit too small to be used all that regularly. The 5¾" is a great compromise, and I still contend there's nothing really wrong with the 7" concentric coil, either.

Monte

YARD HUNTING WITH THE TEJON (2 replies)

Being a new owner of the Tejon, I have managed to get some hours in to learn the Tejon a little. Have not been out in the fields yet but that will be this weekend.
My experience has been hunting old home sites that I have hunted with my partner a lot. Most surface trash has been removed and this is ideal conditions for the Tejon in my learning experience. In my yard I have recovered some coins that SURPRISED me, one being a buffalo nickle, several Wheaties and bullets. I have mostly used the 5.75 DD coil and love the power and depth this coil gets on the Tejon. I run the Sens at 6 and no higher and some times at 4. I have been power balancing the Tejon and it runs smooth with the Tejon chatter which gives a lot of information, the discrimination is excellent. and all of the coins I have found were next to iron.
Next stop was a old house that has a large side yard with a section that has produced and has been hunted in all directions with different detectors. this section is
about 20 feet by 10 feet. other coins have been found out side of this area, but this section has produced some nice coins and jewelry. I was impressed after I dug two
Mercury dimes in about 10 min. I was only digging soft deep signals, both coins to my best judgment were about 7 inches, maybe a little more as the grass was tall.
More coins were found, 4 Wheaties and a broach loaded with diamonds that got my heart beat going until I realized they were not real, but a nice find never the less
being the age of the broach. The Tejon is hot on brass and I did dig some bullets and other old house hold items that were keepers to me. The way the Tejon hit on silver did surprise me, I like the Tejon, and I just cant wait to take it out in the fields, but it sure can find the coins under the right conditions at old houses and its ability to detect keepers next to IRON is the best I have used.

Only the large coins were IDd OK..

This machine is still very capable of locating deep targets in the All Metal mode and can easily match some of my modern machines for depth in this mode in any ground where it can be ground balanced.

I am impressed with how well it responds to small gold and silver chains and we all know how difficult these items are to detect with even the most modern detectors.
Tejon has been a winner for me! (13 replies)

I have been reading about negative issues with the Tejon for some time now, within the various forums. I have owned a Tejon for a year now, and must admit that it is the best Tesoro that I have owned - and I have owned many. Stability issues seem to be the main complaint with users, "erratic and unstable, or chatty", as I have read many times on the forums. I have also read many posts that state this detector is "not deep" within miniralized ground.

Tesoro designed this detector as a Relic hunting machine, to be used primarily in the fields where civil war campsites and skirmishes have taken place. The high frequency (18 khz) is ideal for brass, copper, and lead to name a few. However, if used in public park settings, the Tejon may seem to be erratic due to the billions of pulltabs, and aluminum shards - as the 18 khz frequency is ideally tuned to that type of metal. I have also noticed, that when I get around high voltage power lines - it can become unstable, however, just turning down the sensitivity helps a lot. I have experienced electrical interference with other brands as well. There is one particular field that I hunt that has an underground power line. I cannot hunt within 10 to 20 yards of that power line with my Garrett GTA 1000 - as it becomes highly unstable.

As for depth capabilities with the Tejon - I must attest that this is the deepest detector that I have owned - even with the stock coil. The ground that I search in, is moderate to high mineral content with lots of clay content. The grounds that I hunt were civil war grounds - where soldiers had campfires - so the ground changes rapidly. I have to check my ground balance frequently, and believe this is the key to the Tejon. It has to be balanced correctly in order to get the depth. When I first purchased the Tejon - I took it back to some old hunting grounds covered by my DFX, and immediately started finding more mini balls, and the buck shot which was in the 8 inch range and deeper. I know that I had covered this area with the DFX thoroughly - it just was not as capable as the Tejon. A larger digging tool was also in order, as I was quickly wearing myself down with a trowel. There have been many signals that were so deep, that I had to give up after digging 20 + inches and could not dig any deeper

So, I write this post to give the Tesoro engineers Two Thumbs Up for the Tejon. It is a great relic hunting machine, and if you have been thinking about purchasing one, then I would encourage you to do so. Don't be discouraged by the negative feedback. Setup correctly, and used correctly, this machine is a real winner out in the field.

Bulletman

Tesoro Compadre w/ 8 inch brown search coil is a thumbs up! (8 replies)

Went yesterday to try my new 8 inch brown search coil on the compadre and I am amazed how it performed. I found seven coins in less than 30 minutes in a place where I had suppossedly dig out everything in all metal mode. I even found a nickel all covered with green patina which is hard to find with other detectors when discrimination is being used and was using discrimination until the 5 cent. I did not have time to stay longer because of the mosquitos and it was getting dark but I am eager to go again with no pressure and with all the time in the world.

An Unbelievable Demonstration With Cortes (8 replies)

I just finished a morning of detecting with my Cortes and stopped by a friends house to have a beer and shoot the bull. Another friend stopped by and I started talking detecting to the two of them. I asked my friend to call his neighbor and ask her if I could quickly detect her back yard and give them a quick look at my Cortes in action. The lady next door granted permission and we wandered over to her back yard. I did not bother to bring the headphones, but opted to let them listen to all the sounds. Now for the unbelievable. I turned the Cortes on and went less than five feet and got a 95 number showing silver at 9 inches. Repeated the signal from all directions. With my two buddies intently watching, I dug down 8 inches and the target was still in the ground. I pulled out my Garrett Pro pointer and it signaled dead in the center of the hole. I reached down with my hand and scooped out the loose dirt and saw a big glint of silver. I told them it was a flattened out screw cap, but as I held it, it was too heavy. Wiped the dirt off and it was big silver. A 1954 Franklin half in great shape!I think these two are on the internet looking for a Cortes as we speak. Two people who wanted to see how or if a detector works and they witnessed this in the first 10 seconds of ever seeing a detector in action. I did tell them that this was not an everyday occurance.
Good Job Tesoro  (1 reply)

Yesterday, around 3:PM some dirtbag did a oncoming left hand turn, no turn signal, right in front of my son's Toyota, my son never even had time to lift his foot from the floor, but hit the small commercial truck in the rider's door at probably 50 mph. My son only suffered cuts and bruises, a concussion, and some knee damage. The good news.....his Tesoro Lobo Super Trac was on the rear seat, I found it on the floor, and put in in my car before the tow truck arrived along with a bunch of other personal belongings. This morning I tested it out expecting problems.......BUT the darn'd thing seems to weathered the impact with no damage at all. Nothing appears bent or dented, and it still finds objects at the same distance. So, again I say "GOOD JOB TESORO" :cheekkiss:

Cortes Wavy Threshold (9 replies)

Hey, just got my first Tesoro and its a cortes. Wondering about the threshold sound. Is it supposed to be so wavy and not steady. It is my first threshold machine too, but I always thought it would be smooth. Pretty sure it is ground balanced good, it stays the same moving up or down, it just oscillates constantly. Have read the Tejon is like this, anybody know if the Cortes is too?

Good Monday in the woods (4 replies)

Me and the woman grabbed the Conquistador...some lunch and a six pack and headed to an old foundation back in the woods near my house. Around the old spring house my first signal was an 1890 IH...then 2 steps away I got a pretty nice 1846 large cent. She took the detector from me and about 2 mins later dug a 1907 IH. Ended up digging a few other things...an ornate suspender clasp and a bunch of iron of course. Wow I really hate green briers.

Was a good day all in all...even tho my dog lost her brand new collar..which replaced the new collar she lost the time before losing the one I got her before that...Ect...lol

Wish I had some pics but oh well.

HH
