1877 coin given for change at local store....

A couple days ago my brother goes to a local convenience store and for change receives a nice 1877 Deutsches Reich 1 Pfenning coin. This is the second time at this store the clerk has given my brother an "oldie" The first being an 1895 IH cent about 6 months ago. Anyone else have similiar experiences at their local corner store? Thanks for looking and check the return coinage before tossing it in your center console or pocket. I always check to see if a previous customer of the coin machine inadvertently left one of these rejected coins there. I have found several silver dimes, a silver quarter or two, and many foreign coins there. Strange that they accept clad junk and reject the genuine article, but..that's the case. The people who use these things would rather take a 10% hit on their piggy bank than take the time to roll up their coins, anyway, so it's not too surprising they either don't care about the reject coins or are too spaced out to notice, anyway....lol

Almost two years ago he is out hunting with his "seagull" method of hunting what does he pull out from a farm field? An 1825 Large cent! I was shocked and totally in disbelief of "how in the world could he get a signal with this "seagull" method of hunting?" Now I will explain his "seagull" metal detecting method: coil 6" - 8" off the ground, swings the coil like he is playing a professional golf game, and walks at a steady pace as if he is walking down the street to get to the store. It is a bottom-of-the-line detector that has nickel / penny / dime / quarter indications on the screen with one audio tone. I have to say, he finds a ton of clad with this method and most of the coins are quarters and dimes. This year, we were at one of our local parks and he pulled out a beautiful 1917 merc dime. It is amazing that he can hold his coil that far above the ground and still get lucky in finding nice coins.

HH - Jim
