Boy was it nice detecting with those settings. Thanks Bryce now i know what it sounds like on deep silver and coins in trash. It was not text book at all on the deep coins but watching the box on the screen move all over the top and the sounds coins make that are deep will forever be etched in my mind. Here are some finds from the last few hunts this week. I wanted to get my fix before winter sets in. The gun is an older Nichols Detective 250 cap gun (works). The token brought multiple offers while I was trying to ID it. I usually don't sell what I find but was offered enough to cover a sorely needed x-1 probe. Hope you all get out soon. Thanks for looking, JJ

I decided to go Hunt on Good Friday, and had one of my best hunts ever. First, it was a hunted out spot that I frequent, because when you swing an Explorer, you're going to get results when you scan very slowly. It was a beautiful day, the sun was out, not a cloud in the sky and in the upper fifties. You can still see around you as the greenery was not taking hold, with the trees and the bushes just beginning to bud I knew I didn't have time before everything was to bloom, so I worked an area that looked promising according to my intuition . Sometimes you need to listen to that little voice inside or that feeling to hit an area as you look around. I decided to work around the trees that day, and we know trashy those areas can be, and it paid big time.

My Explorer was set up with the screen completely open and I work in iron mask set at -10, I also had my sensitivity set to a steady Tretch hold. When hunting with any of the MindLab Explorer's, it's very important to set your sensitivity according to the area where you are hunting, because in some areas, you can run high... like 29, to the max, but, there are areas where you have to bring it down to where your Explorer's Tretch hold tone is steady and constant and not chirping when you lay the detector down, or when you raise it up, by the way, I hunt in ferrous in heavy iron infested areas. OK, OK, I know, get back to how I dug this beauty.

I was weaving in and out of trees, when something told me to go right, and sure enough there was a large tree in front of me. and I said to myself, steady now, go slow, go slow, went around the tree with a few iron signals and as I spread out around the tree as I always do, I got this very nice nickel tone at about 6". When coin hunting I don't generally dig these signals, but when there's only one or two, I go for them. I dug into the ground making my plug and the signal was still there, so out with my trusty X-Probe, and I pin pointed the target, very seldom do you get a nickel tone that turns out to be a pull top, although I have dug them that deep, but not today.

I finally got the dirt out where the target was, and as I separated the dirt and twigs, low and behold I saw a gold color, but thought it was gold colored foil, and as I kept cleaning the dirt away, there she was... a 1911 2 1/2 dollar Indian Head Gold Coin with it's bezel. There is no feeling to describe how it feels to pull a coin like this out of the ground... After repeated thank you to the Lord, I let out a load yeah out of my mouth and had to look around to make sure I was still alone, hands still shaking I recheck the hole, but no chain to be found. I carefully return the dirt to it's plug and replaced the plug, and as I was filling the plug... I look to side and see this tree is down about 5 feet from me, and I went like a bee line to it. There I got a deep signal and I could not believe what I was hearing. The cursor was stuck to the right upper part of the smart find screen, and had to make sure, so I set the detector to the digital numbers and sure enough, it read a solid 29.3 at about 8 or 9 inches. Dug my plug and out pop a Barber Quarter and rechecked the hole and said, hey its got friends. yep, two Barber dimes in the same hole.

This was beginning to be a great day, then about five inches to the right, got another high pitch. Guys and dolls, I am saying no way, this can't be, this place has been hunted since the 70's... dug a plug and out pop a Merc and another Barber dime. I kept working around trees and bushes and got the silver nickel and another Merc. dime hiding at the base of a bush which was starting to bud. The Buffalo's were random and beside them a Wheatie and an Indian penny. I also dug some relics and all in all had one of the best days of hunting in a hunted out spot in a long time since finding Silverado where I dug more than 500 hundred silver coins, but that is another story. The guy's couldn't believe how much treasure I had dug in the same area where there was 4 or 5 of us hunting just a week ago. I thank the Lord always for all my finds and they are many in both Gold and Silver ... HH to you all.

Philo_NY

Loaned out detector finds it's target (2 replies)

Not a big deal and no pictures, but a win for MDer's in my opinion ...
My Sister calls me on Friday and says her Husband's brother lost his wedding ring in a corn field on Friday. He was cleaning out a plugged combine head and throwing the husk/weeds, and realized his ring was gone. They searched for a while, and gave up, and flagged the area where he thought it went. She asked to borrow the detectors, and came Saturday to get them. I had taken her once before for about 2 hours - she used my old Ace 250 and would just mark a target with a stick, and then I would come over with the EXII and tell her what I thought it was, then dig it. She marked one that sounded really good ... out came an Indian Head, and then re-checked the hole - and out came another Indian Head.
So this time I took her in to the my back yard and dropped my wedding ring down and had her listen to the tone and how strong it sounded laying on top of the ground. Then took her to the buried coins I put out there to have her listen to the different tone and weaker sound. Off she went.
She called me about 3 hours later. She had searched the area they flagged as where he thought it went, with no success. Shortly after trying in the opposite direction of where he thought it went - bingo - found it. Nice to provide a bunch of non-detectorists with a positive detector experience ...

Using SE for silver hunting. (1 reply)

:detecting: I think I have found out why I don't find silver as often as a couple of my buddies. I have been waiting for the cursor to settle in the classic positions before digging or at least bouncing around near the classic positions on the smartfind screen. While playing around with some silver coins in my back yard I found that when I raised my coil to 6 inches or more the cursor would move around or lock in a different position on the screen when deeper than 5 or 6 inches. So what I have been doing is finding the rare shallow silver coin. I now know that when deep hunting you must pay special heed to the depth and sound of the coin wherever the cursor is located or jumping on the screen. I now I will dig a little more trash but I am sure more silver. Please correct me if I am wrong. This is using the SE Minelab of course. Thanks in advance

I was in a community about 36 miles from home where there is a large public park next to a big lake. This park has been detected to death, so I was pretty surprised and pleased to come across this deep silver-like signal and the following interesting piece. It signaled as a deep quarter with digital readings mostly at 00 29, and a hint that it was silver. I didn't recall hearing any kind of nickel sound, or seeing any nickel numbers. I believe it is silver around the nickel as it came out of the ground looking great. Even the nickel was not discolored. Also found five wheat pennies, the oldest a 1927D.
whispered from the depths (3 replies)

At 12", this is the deepest coin I have ever dug. 20' from where i found the reale last month, I have been over this area several times. I have to attribute this to my new 10x12 SEF coil. :beers: This whispered to me at a constant 00 29/28 . Sometimes this is a false signal as it is too good to be true, but reality this time. think its an 1837 as this scan does not do it justice.. Full liberty and stars, it is a nice coin. Wonder if it is a rare variety? :surprised:

2 full shovel fulls down and i see the green disc ; on the top of my pile. u know that feeling!:clapping::bouncy:

If u don't have this coil, u should get one. :yikes:

Also from another location, I found this coin but i have no clue what it is. not sure if it says 1962 or 1862, but I think a british penny? ??? ??? Sitting camouflaged by a trusty nail (they r ur friends) , this explained why it remained at 6-7"

Hh

Aaron

Off Topic, But I Guess You Got To Laugh. (5 replies)

Over the years I have had some weird things happen to me while detecting, but none of these situations embarrassed me as much as the other people. Today, I finally got caught doing something I have avoided for five years. I suffer from irritable bowel syndrom( diarrhea to most) and I usually keep it under control. Last night I forgot my medicine and took a chance by going detecting on a super fall day. I was Ok for the first two hours, but about 10 am my stomach rumbled. I have about three minutes when this happens and I quickly looked for the nearest bush. Oh God I thought, all the leaves are off the bushes. The only bush with leaves was twenty feet off a walking path on a steep hill. It was going to have to be the place. I have dodged people for the last five years and I have never been caught. Well today that changed. I no sooner got down to business when an elderly lady walked over the hill and stopped in her tracks when she got a look at me. I was so startled that I crapped in my pants that were on the ground. She did an about face and I headed for the farm.I have had many people ask me to detect with them, so if any of those people read this, they will know why I decline the invitation to hunt with them.
Is there any more depth with the EX II and Pro Coil over the 1050 stock? (3 replies)

Hello all,

I know the Pro Coil is lighter, separates better and the sensitivity can be bumped up a bit, but is there any more depth with this coil on the Explorer II over the 1050 stock coil? We're talking a 1/2" difference in coil size. Am I better off sticking with the 1050? I am digging deep with it.

Thanks

Jim

So just what does 'deep silver' sound like? (16 replies)

Whisper? Iffy? Broken up? Barely audible? Just a nudge on the threshold?

So far I've been getting decent signals down to 6-8 inches. I mean, sounds that aren't so hard to miss and that register on the Smart screen. But that's still pulling Mercs and Roosies. Some of the locations should have Barbers at least (well, more of them than I've found so far anyway). Same for the Indians too I suppose.

What's that next layer down come through as sound wise on an Explorer? Anyone happen to have a video or recording they can point to that would be a good example of silver coming from the depths? (I don't think a 'test garden' variety would quite do it justice). Is the Smart screen still registering much at depth, or is it all tone at that point?

Inquiring minds...

HH,
DirtFlipper

Met up with forum member bday and found another Seated Lady. (16 replies)

I have been in contact with forum member bday for over a year now about meeting and doing some hunting...but something always came up for both of us.

Well we finally got to meet and hunt and had a blast.

The park was one that I met Guvner at a year or so ago...and he told me that he...golddigger...and Mike Moutray had hit it a few times in the past.

Bob (bday) also said that a wheatie from this place on any given day is a moral victory...so I knew I was in for a challenge. Hey...what park isn't a challenge anymore!:beers:

Don't know if Bob is interested in wildlife or not:biggrin:...but I brought my Himalayan friend along:smile:...so Bob got his first glimpse of the Yeti.:jump:

I also brought along my faithful friend and hunting buddy Hercules. He goes with me on every hunt if possible.

After some chatting...we got down to some huntin'.

Bob told me that a lot of nice old coins had come out of here in the past...and Guvner told me the same thing...as did GOLDDIGGER.

The last time here...Guvner called GOLDDIGGER and asked him where some seated had been found...and he was kind enough to point me to the right spot.

I was able to sniff out a seated dime on that day after nearly 3 hours of huntin'.

After almost 2 hours with nothin' but crap in my pouch today:cool: ..I asked Bob if he minded telling me where he had most of his luck at over the years. He was kind enough to point me to a spot where he had pulled a lot of injuns' out of back in the 80's...so that's where I went.

Within a half hour or so I was able to get a signal through the nulling. This spot was loaded with iron and junk signals...and I mean LOADED.:stars:

It ended up being an 1880 Injun...so I was very happy.

About 20 minutes later I got a deeeeep and faint warble...but man was it NICE. It buried the depth meter and was a very tiny window of a hit between the iron...but again..it was a sweet one.:clapping:

I dug a nice plug of at least 8" and ran the probe. It SANG:smile:...and it was a good 2" deeper from what I could tell.:super:

I carefully popped out a nice clod/chunk of dark soil from 10" down...and got what I always dream of....a grayish rim barely peeking out from the side of the clod.

I asked Bob and the Yeti if we should pop open my little present to see what I had:smile:...or whether I should leave it intact and scan it for the post. We all three unanimously agreed....OPEN it...OPEN it.:bouncy:

The Yeti was guessing barber because of the gray colored rim...so I popped it open to see. We saw the back of what we thought was a barber...UNTIL we flipped it over and took some crust off the front and saw the seated lady peeking at me.:yikes: YIPPEE!

The absolute last thing I expected to see from this beat up park...and coming from 10" down.:super:

It was then that we decided to go to lunch so we could REfuel and come back for more hunting.
I was shaking from the excitement of seeing the seated dime shocker...and was smiling like a little kid. Just ask Bob or Yeti and I'm sure they'll tell 'ya.

I slung the SE in the car...and off we went to eat.

We pulled back in the park an hour or so later...and the Yeti moved with cat like quickness to the trunk to get his machine on first...AND to try and root me out of my hunting spot. He grabbed his XS and said..."What the freak is making all that racket of gibberish back here?"....He then says..."Dude..you were so excited when we left...that you left your dang SE on the whole time"...you forgot to turn it off when we left"::rofl:

Anyway...we started hunting again...and just as I expected...the Yeti had decided it would be much more fun to help me hunt MY spot:punch:...and was rubbing elbows with me again.

Within 15 minutes I had popped out a barber dime from about 8" to 9"...and 1892. Dang missed a second seated dime by only one year.

After that point though...I didn't find SQUAT for the rest of the hunt:smoke: ...other than a button...a wheatie...and a junk ring.

Bob was kind enough to ruffle my feathers an hour later when he yelled and said.."This is really gonna tick you off...but I just found a Merc you need" :crylol:

I was thrilled that we were all finding stuff but it was now time to go. Bob and I were talking when we realized that the Yeti had wandered off somewhere accross the tundra.

I told Bob he probably found some berries to graze on somewhere:smile:..and we both got a chuckle.

After 10 minutes or so...Bob spotted the Yeti. He had wandered off way behind the spot I pointed out to him...where my seated had come from the last time here.

Well when he made it back to the car . Bob told him he had wandered to an area where a little goldfish pond had once been.
The Yeti's reply..another classic.... "I got sidetracked from the smell of the Wendy's restaurant accross the street and it pulled me off course":crylol: :hot:

He then showed us his finds and we realized we had a great day....but more importantly...forum members were able to meet and hunt.

Yeti ended up with 3 silver..some wheaties...the buffalo nickel...and the trinket.

Bob ended up with a Merc and a wheatie.

I ended up with the 1885 Seated dime...1892 barber dime...a wheatie...and the 1880 Injun.

I want to thank Bob for the invitation to hunt with him. It was a long time coming...but worth the wait. He is a great guy...and lots of fun to hunt with.

We will do it again soon.
