Now I'm ruined. I'm turning into a depth junky. For beach hunting and occasional land hunting in cleaner sites which of the above coils would work best as far as depth and or target separation. I'm less concerned about coverage. I have the 10 inch Slimline so I'm wondering if there is any or at least enough depth increase to justify even adding one of these coils. I read somewhere that the SEF is a hybrid coil that is part DD and part Concentric whatever that means. Thanks!

Newbie's Comparison Of GT To Whites, Explorer, Etc. (36 replies)

I thought it would be of intrest to potential new Sovereign owners to hear about my initial comparisons of it to the Whites, including the QXT Pro and 6000 Pro XL, as well as to the 2 or 3 Explorers I've owned over the years and a few other machines. Mainly, though, this will be a comparison of it to Whites and the Explorer. I plan to do the initial hardware comparison in quality, weight, balance, and so on, and then move onto my initial hunts with it and how successful they were. Later, months down the road, I'll report back with the success of hunts with it at the same places again. This will be useful to see if it's out performing other machines as a newbie user and then later as a more seasoned user.

There are several locations I plan to do these test hunts at which should offer good comparison info. One location is realitively clean, at the most moderate in trash, and has produced several deep mercs and Washingtons for me. I've worked this area with numerious machines, including the 6000 Pro XL, QXT Pro, and then later an Explorer. The QXT Pro was able to pull coins at it's maximum depth range....somewhere around 8 to 9 (at the most) inches in depth. The ground here isn't highly mineralized or contain a lot of iron or hot rocks. This site is much older than those Mercs and Washingtons and saw a lot of public traffic dating back to about the late 1800's. For this reason there should be deeper and older coins at this location.

Encouraged by the numerous deep dimes and quarters I was pulling with the QXT Pro, I was anxious to get back to this spot with a new Explorer. I hunted this area as a newbie Explorer user and then later as I gained the wisdom to hunt with it properly for maximum performance. I tried hunting in several configurations, including auto and manual sensitivity and with other various settings. The Explorer was not able to pull any more coins out of the area, let alone any deeper ones. Now, before anybody jumps down my throat about the Explorer let me just say that I've owned 2 or 3 and they are awesome machines. They'll hit harder and deeper on many metal types than the QXT Pro, but if the QXT is set up and used properly it gets about the same depth in non-mineralized ground on silver/copper coins. The QXT is a low frequency detector so silver/copper is it's specialty when hunting. However, if there is any kind of ground minerals or hot rocks in the area the Explore blows it away in depth on silver/copper. I just feel from my experience that under ideal ground conditions the QXT can match the Explorer in depth on silver/copper, probably why the Explorers I used were not able to pull anything deeper using the stock coil.

Anyway, this gives you an idea of what this one site is about. If as a newbie I start popping deeper coins I'll be real impressed. But I don't expect that to happen. We'll see, but as a more seasoned user later on down the road it will also be real interesting to see what this machine and 10" Tornado coil is able to do depth wise there.

Another few spots I have lined up are as follows. One particular location has such heavy hot rock and mineral concentration that ALL my previous machines were unable to get stable performance there. If you wanted to dig targets you had to dig the iffy ones because they were all that way. Lowering the sensitivity made the machines more stable but also limited depth largely. When I got my Explorer I went back to this spot and instantly starting popping barber dimes, indians, and 3 large cents. While the Explorer still wasn't given 100% perfect coin signals on everything but the large cents, it was giving me coin signals that were about 90% "perfect" and as a result gave me the ability to target potential coins and not just dig anything that sounded off as with the other machines. While these coins were only about 4" or so deep, the 3 large cents in seperate holes were in the 7 or 8" range and sounded real good (the ground in this area didn't have the hot rocks or mineralization. They did, however, each have an old square nail either on top to them, right next to them, or fused to the coin. Very impressive. So, this area will be both a good test of the Sovereign GT in high minerals/hotrocks, and also a good test for it an better area minerals wise but containing a lot of iron. A good test of both abilities of this machine.

At least one other spot (there will be others, I'm sure) that I plan to try it at is in the woods high on a ridge. This area is so remote and hard to get to that I'm confident nobody has ever hunted it. I managed to pull a 1909 barber half, 1904 barber dime, and an indian head penny from this site. It is infested with iron so I'm fairly confident there are more coins to be found if the Sovereign's Iron Mask can see the good through the bad.

Other spots will be described and the machine tested at, and as I said they will be visted as a newbie to the Sovereign and then later as I get more experience. The first thing I plan to do is do a comparison of the build quality of the Sovereign versus the Whites, as well as it's weight compared to them and the Explorer. That's the next message.

:thumbup:What do you want in a new version of a Sovereign. And when will it come out ? (17 replies)

I have been flirting with the idea of selling my SOVEREIGN GT, for something else. Boy, I am glad that was just a phase that lasted a couple hours. I am going to stick with my original plan. I will get rid of my GT only for a new version of the Sovereign.

I would like to see the new coil that is on the SE PRO, and the E-Trac to be standard on a new Sovereign. If Minelab can pull off a trigger pinpoint with the ability to still hip mount, that would be awesome but most likely impossible. I would like to see a target id built in if possible, instead of having to buy the meter separate. I would also like the target id tones to be digital in order to have a more distinction between various targets. So what would you like to se in a new Sovereign? And I dare ask does anyone know of any rumblings within Minelab that a new Sovereign is on the way? And God forbid that Minelab discontinue the Sovereign line. Can you imagine that:goodnight:

Just as an added precaution.

I would have used a rubber heatshrink tubing to completely cover the terminals and the wires. But I didn't think that it was necessary.. Just because of how snug the neoprene cable glands and grommets were to begin with.. along with all of the O-Rings that make up the Connectors.

I also added the Cable Strain Relief ends to both sides of the connectors..

Here are a few pictures of what I did...
I hope that this may help those who are trying to do the same thing for themselves..

These connectors are IP68 rated.

The grassy hunting area is about 50X100 ft. I have taken just about every detector I've owned in the past 25 years down there and the last old coin I pulled from there was about 7 years ago with a Fisher CZ 6a. I was shocked when I got a faint but repeatable signal that sounded sweet when doing the wiggle and out pops the 42 Merc at about 8-9 inches. That is excellent depth in my mineralized ground and is the deepest dime I've ever dug on land. The silver Rosie and the rest of the coins where also in the 8 inch range. This was with the S-8 coil and I used the coil pump method to set my sensitivity which ended up between 12.00 and 1:00 with a steady threshold. I need to take the 10 inch coil down there.

help! Problems with sunray hipmount cables. I think? (4 replies)

I have had my Sovereign GT, for a few years and I know the detector well. Today i decided to use the hipmont bag to hang the control box from my neck, while detecting a field. I have the Sunray extension cable to be able to have the Sunray probe mounted on the pole and use a hipmount configuration. As soon as I fired up the GT, I got multiple false beeps. I have never had this happen before. The GT usually Nulls when going over junk. This was sounds of multiple signals even though there where none. I did have some huge power lines going over the field so I flipped the noise cancel switch and that was no help. I was detecting the same field the day before with the detector set up conventionally with the Sunray S-8. I had no problems with falsing when I used the detector with the S-8 and the control box pole mounted. Today the stock 10inch slimline was going nuts with the hipmount setup. So I broke down the detector and set it up pole mounted with the stock 10inch, and everything ran smooth. I switched back to the hipmount set up and the falsing continued again, but then stopped? All day I experimented and found that I would get inconsistent performance with the hipmount set up. My question is. Does high power lines have more of an effect on a detector with hanging cables? I had the cables secured thru the hip mount loop to avoid cable strain. Or is this a case of perhaps faulty extension cables on my machine? Has anyone else had problems with falsing when using hipmount extension cables. I am such as nut over taking care of my machine. I started thinking some crazy stuff about my GT. I need someone to tell me to calm down and that my GT is not broken. LOL

Thanks in advance

jason

Can You Use Tone and/or ID To Tell Type Of Coin On GT? (5 replies)

Since I've got a used GT on the way with the new Minelab meter I began to read up on the VDI numbers I can expect. I was surprised that despite the large amount of numbers the unit can display it doesn't seem to have the ability to seperate copper pennies, dimes, quarters (all clad), or even silver dimes, quarters, halfs, etc. I would have figured that the numerical ID would be slightly different for most of the coins. While on my QXT Pro it only had a penny and "COIN" zone, I could figure out what the coin likely was based on both the audio response and the tendency of the meter on a target (IE: Zincs in the penny range, copper pennies bounced evenly between penny and coin, clad dimes stayed mostly in the coin zone but would hit penny here and there, quarters stayed in the coin zone, silver dimes stayed in the coin zone but had a higher pitch than clad dimes, silver quarters stayed in the coin zone and were also higher pitched than a clad quarter yet more round and fuzzy than a silver dime).

I'm hoping there are sound and visual clues to what the coin is on the GT just like there were hints in the QXT Pro. I know the old rule...don't rely on the meter. Still, I do like to have a clue as to what the coin might be before I dig it just for the anticipation factor. A friend's 6000 Pro XL with the old analog meter gives a much more refined target ID. He can tell by where the needle is if it's likely a clad dime, silver dime, clad quarter, silver quarter, half, and even dollar. Seems strange that a digital meter wouldn't have the same resolution. Are any of the analog ones for the GT ability to do this?

OK, so is the Sovereign and the Excalibur the same machine? (3 replies)

Are they both the same machine less water proofed, and a couple of switches? many of you say that the sovereign is a better beach/water detector. Are the electronics inside the box/tube similar? The real question is this: Is it worth the time to find a way to install a sovereign in a waterproof box to go beach/surf detecting? They are much less expensive than an Excalibur, especially used. Any and all comments/criticism are welcome!

Changing the threshold tone (4 replies)

Can the threshold tone be changed? Mine has a low gravelly tone to it, it also has the Dixie mod's done to it. I don't know if a Gt without the mod's would sound any different as this is the only GT I've ever seen. I like the way mine sound's when the threshhold comes back after notching out a tab. I think it would be easier to pick out the deeper targets when there is only a threshold change. It would be much more pleasing to listen to also.
Thank's Gary
