Beach trip to see what Ida did (no replies)

The quick beach trip was fun. Ida really mixed the sand up. Looked like drifts from a snow storm. Some areas piled high, others cut. Every where I walked the sand was soft. Made for a work out. CZ6a performed very well.

Lots of iron and way too much large debris from ripped up structures getting tossed about to get into the water, so I did not get the Sand Shark out, stayed with the CZ6a. Did not get more than ankle deep, with wave action occasionally putting it knee high; carefully watching for logs.

Some change, couple of tokens and some cheap jewelry. One area had some large shells. Very little foil trash. It got washed away.

Hope those who can get out as the beach settles down can find some hot spots.
tvr

Embarrassing reminder (2 replies)

Last time at the beach with both CZ's it seemed the CZ6a was not finding many mid-tones although it was cleaning up on the high tones. Quarters were frequent and deep. Thought I had been checking the coil cover frequently and when done, hosed and wiped down the detector. Air tested at home and nickles were only getting about 6 inches. Penny, dime and quarter were reasonable; around 9, 9 and 10 inches respectively. Figured this winter would be tune up time.

Things worked out so that I am going to be able to hit the beach Saturday to get a shot at what Ida uncovered. Was thinking about what detectors to take and decided I wanted the CZ6a along even if not at it's best. Checked batteries (still good, did not change them, only have about two hours on them). Checked connectors and saw sand coming out of the coil cover when I set the CZ6a on it's side. Took off the cover and it was loaded up. Sand must have been wet and sticking up against the coil bottom when I had the cover off checking it at the beach last time. Must not have dried by the time I got home and air tested it with the coil cover still on. Now, few weeks later, it was dry and dumping out lots of ugly gray sand.

With cover off, coil wiped down, not trying to maximize anything, I got an easy 11 inches on a nickle with the 12 inch Sunray coil. Packed her up along with the Sand Shark. I'm ready.

Boy do I feel stupid.

And very happy to have the CZ6a ready for the morning! I don't think I'll put the coil cover on tomorrow.
tvr

CZ70 Continues to impress  (2 replies)

This detector has been a ring magnet  I can add two more sterling silver rings to my collection. Shown is a large mens silver wedding band marked .925 and I LOVE YOU and a Mexican silver ring marked .925 Heco (hand made).

What really impressed me is I hit a small area in the town I live with a building that dates to around the 1920's, and I pounded it with my Coinstrike in the past, and even though it's an older area I never found anything old with the C$ at this spot, not a single wheatback. It's littered with nails (whatever was there before most likely burned down as once you get down about 6-8" you hit a sandy layer where most of the nails are found). I hit it with the CZ70 last weekend using the 12.5" Sunray coil, and I was able to pull out a 1944 Merc and a lawnmower hammered Rosie, as well as a 1929-S wheatback (not shown). While not amazing finds in themselves, their the first silver coins I've found in the city I live in (most of the older areas have been redeveloped :ranting:

I also pulled out about $6.00 in clad, that's definitely been there a while. I have no idea how the Coinstrike missed all this, yet the CZ70 had no trouble getting them, even with a littering of old rusty nails (to be fair, I'd say that the majority of the nails are below the coins, but still).

I have the new F75 LTD coming, it'll be interesting to see if it can find masked coins using the small DD coil that the big CZ concentrics can't see due to masking

The CZ70 may be slower, and a little heavy, but one thing is certain, it loves silver :super:

<div id="div_4884dea6d7288163064bce356fba0c33"

This year I decided to spend some extra time there and take my CZ70. I bought a nice out of print local history book to research the area, and mapped out all of the late 1700 - early 1800 town squares and parks to hunt.

I got out for a total of five hunts. I wasn't planning to hunt the first day, but on my way from the Rochester airport to Corning, I saw a sign for a town I had high hopes for and decided to just take a look at it and then head for the hotel. The town square was from the 1820's, and was surrounded by hotels, saloons, stores, and churches. I got there and it looked great, so I decided to break out the CZ70 from my suitcase and give it a shot. It was either filled in, or hit hard, as I was only finding 1970's and newer coins. After a few disappointing hours here, I headed for Corning. I still had a couple of hours of daylight and decided to drive around a pick a random area to hunt until it was dark. I ended up finding two silver rosies (first target was one) and a wheatback. Not old, but still off to a great start. The next day I decided to hit a town square that started in the 1790's. I found several wheatbacks, but no silver. I decided to hunt under a bush that looked like it had been there for a long time. I got a nice signal and dug a hole that was as deep as my lesche is long, and I found an old buckle. I think it may be a Colonial buckle, but I'm really interested in what the Colonial experts think? It was silver plated, and had a simple design of lines on the front (that may not be apparent in the photo). Apparently it was hand made, on the photo of the rear, file marks are visible on the upper left . It also doesn't appear to have been plated on the back, only the front. Here it is:

<div id="div_b2a84995e5b0c7e34253ee5b3210daf0"

We hit it for a few hours and the only notable find I made was an old pewter spoon. He did a good job cleaning it out, but I think it would be worth hitting with a small coil, as there's a lot of iron in the spots he found the coins. We tried another spot not far away and didn't find much so we headed for another town. Hit an old field that definitely had some age on it. We found some wheats and osgood found a nice sterling silver ring, and as I was heading back to my car I finally found a silver coin that day and it was a nice 1953 Washington quarter

I invited osgood to hit some spots that I had researched the next day . First stop was an old town square that dated back to the early 1800's in an old wine making region in the Finger Lakes. I immediately started pulling wheats, and then after a couple of wheats I got that oh so familiar sound of deep silver, and pulled out my first seated dime!! Turned out to be a nice 1884 seated liberty dime  This was within the first 30 minutes and I thought for sure more old silver would come, but it wasn't to be, although osgood his second silver ring of the weekend here. We hit old spots around this particular lake, and surprisingly only found more wheats so we decided to hit an old park that Ossgood found on the way back to Corning. He started pulling wheats, and I was finding lots of clad, and then finally moved to another area and started finding wheats too. I got a nice deep hit and at about 7" pulled out a 1906 Indian Head. The just a couple of feet from the injun I pulled out this old button at a good depth as well. It's marked * J.H. Wilson * Philadelphia and has a harp on the once gold gilted front. J.H. Wilson was in business from 1873-1904 and apparently made both military as well as civilian buttons. Anyone have any ideas what this button is from? Military band perhaps?

<div id="div_61b5e9e6444dcc5d4e51f1c145b62db1"

The parks were from the 1800's but nothing, and I mean nothing. Hardly any trash OR coins  I moved back to the first park that produced and started finding wheatbacks right away. After a few wheats the first silver appeared, this time a 1943 merc! Not high dollar, but I love mercs. After few more wheats I get a nice faint silver sound, and at about 7" I recovered a nice little antique sterling ring with a heart shaped green stone in the center  I love finding gold and silver jewelery, especially the older stuff. After the ring and another wheat or two got a nice silver sound and a silver rosie came to light. Although it's usually a good way to jinx yourself, I decided I would stay there until I got at least three silver dimes  Found a few more wheats, but no silver for about an hour. I started working a pattern back to my car as it was getting cold, and raining. Luckily the CZ70 is rainproof, so I didn't car about the rain and kept going. Finally just across the street from my car I got a real iffy iron to high coin bouncer (I believe it was on edge), but something about it was enticing so I decided to dig it and was rewarded with a 1916 Merc. Unfortunately it was not the coveted "D" (the second non "D" 1916 of the year). Found a few more wheats in that area and decided to call it a day.

<div id="div_4c41524ac975e9b57a2589f10ab8144a"

New CZ-21: LED's ??? (4 replies)

I just got a new CZ-21. The owner's manual speaks of two led lights that indicate signal strength and serve as a battery tester. The lights are not on my CZ-21. Did they change after the manual was written?

All CZ's are great machines. I have a CZ-5 and I used to have a CZ-20.
I know the old pinpoint button on the CZ-20 was a weak point, but I don't like this new pinpoint button. You can't reset it like you could the old one.
Other than that I love it. I went to the beach today. The beach is sanded in, so I didn't find much; 61 cents.

TheHawg

Old technology still working just fine.... (10 replies)

I got out for a couple of hours this afternoon. I hit an old yard here in town that I had hit earlier this year. I was using a cz6a with a 5 inch coil on it. Sens at 5, Volume at 5, mellow ground. You really can tell by the softness of the hit if a coin is deep or not. I even quit digging zincs after 12 of them, none deep. I dug 7 wheat cents from 191? to 1941, a bunch of clad, a nice sterling ring with a greenish stone in it and 2 cool tokens. These tokens are almost as big as a half dollar. One was for Ford V8's. It had 30 years of progress on one side and the dates-1903-1933. It was in a hole with a nail but still gave a good signal.
And.....I found pirate gold!! At least that is what the token says. It's dated 1650 on one side with a pirate head and the other side says one doubloon. Probably some kind of game token??? Had a blast. Can't afford a new detector like an F75 so I guess a trusty cz will just have to do. Looking forward to taking it to the beach on our anniversary trip. Bob.
