VDI of coins vs soil conditions vs disc (2 replies)

a loaded question-- in my park zinc lincolns ring up as "screwcap" a lot- but not always. the dirt changes from clay mix to sand to powder soft black to wood chip lots. zincs ring up a lot of different numbers. now does the amount of disc and the soil condition have a great effect on the VDI? secondly does the closeness of the coil to the ground also affect this very much? i know when one is on top of ground or a big flatten screwcap it can overload and just raise the loop up, but that air between and i believe airtests for depth are different than actual buried. i know depth affects VDI on iffy targets. basically just curious on VDI and ground /soil conditions and accurate readings shallower targets.

anyone care to make my head hurt with some tech talk? lol :)

Searching for La Trinidad (6 replies)

Ok, a little background..... I no longer live in the lovely Gila Valley of Arizona but have since retired and now reside with my wife in the always green and sometimes damp rain-forests of Central America. Metal detecting and a love of history go hand-in-hand, so I find this is a rare opportunity, should I care to take advantage of it. Most Central Americans have no clue about their country's history and couldn't care less. Few can afford a metal detector even if it were possible to buy one here, tourists rarely bring a detector along and then only to the beaches, so most anything lost or buried since the dawn of man is still in the ground.

I've been researching, so far as information is available on the internet, the Battle of La Trinidad between the forces of Guatemalan Justo Milla, and Francisco Morazan with his army of Nicaraguans, Salvadoreans and Honduran volunteers on November 11, 1827. The two armies met a few miles north of Sabanagrande, south of Tegucigalpa, resulting in Morazan crushing the opposing force and ensuring Honduran independence. Very little information is available online about this important battle.

Saturday I went looking for the site for the first time. There is a monument, erected within the last decade or so, supposedly near the battle site, but no one locally can accurately pinpoint it. On the advice of some locals I went hacking through the dense undergrowth, MXT in hand, hoping to find any indication of the battle. I found a few pieces of rusted iron, probably relatively modern, but nothing I can definitively tag to 1827.

A few more questions, and a few more wild-goose-chases later I decided to try to figure it out on my own. Looking down from the monument one can see a broad expanse of relatively level land, perfect for a battle site. In my best "military-strategist" mode I determined that would be where I would want to fight since it affords plenty of room for movement of cavalry and artillery, as well as infantry.

Today I visited the Military Museum in Tegucigalpa, spoke at length with a very amiable and knowledgeable older gentleman, and learned precisely why I AM NOT a general. He told me, since Morazan was on the field first, he placed his artillery and troops on the high ground behind the monument and awaited Milla's attack from below. Milla charged uphill again and again for hours until Morazan finally sent his reserve around to flank Milla's army, and the battle was over.

Now I know the battle was about a quarter mile downhill from where I was searching. I hope to go again in a couple weeks to give it another try. This is becoming a labor of love. I'd be happy with JUST ONE musket ball from La Trinidad. I know if I keep at it diligently I will find it. I keep hearing stories of people finding an occasional ball or horseshoe on the surface, so hopefully my MXT will do even better.

Programmable detectors (12 replies)

Anyone else check out the forums for the various programmable detectors? I like to check out the V3i and CTX3030 forums. The problems those people have are incrediable. Amazing they find anything. I see people that just get the thing and start tweeking programs. Plugging in a program that is great for someone else's ground then wonder why they can't get any depth. All I can say is thank god for switches and knobs. My Pro has all the buttons I think I will ever need. I have tried various programmables like the Spectrum XLT, DFX, Minelabs Quatro, Explorer II, and SE. Nice detectors all but they all have one problem you can't tell what effect one setting has on another and operators that have to try to run before they have learned to crawl. I would imagine a lot of good detectors get set back to the factory cause people get them all balled up. I am sure they are great for people that like spending all day running through programs. I imagine it is like watching my teenaged granddaughter playing a video game. She spends three quarters of the day dressing her character, changing hair color and stuff. Me when I play I just grab a war axe and go hit somebody with it.

PS. This is an effort to get a little chatter going. Everyone can't be out detecting can they? I guess they should be. Here it is 4:30 in the AM and not a new post since yesterday. Maybe we need some appreciation posts for our intelligently designed MXT's. They are so easy. Maybe a Hey! Don't knock it til you tried it posting or a "the grass IS greener over here!" Even a Hey shut up people are trying to sleep!

Yesterday I was out looking for a new place to detect. I was along the Carson river. There are rocks that set off the overload, metal trash everywhere. Then I found one object that kept moving around. I would go back to it's last location to make sure it wasn't there. Nothing. Then when I was about to go nuts I realized it was hitting on my shovel. I found some good camping/fishing spots though.

However, what is your experience with VDI's on this? I know silver coins in my area (high mineralization) will be a few numbers above what a clad coin will be but do the deeper ones jump around on ya? I'm just never sure when to dig. I mean, I will get a VDI of say, 83. But when I pass over it again, it drops to 14. And then to 83, and then to -36. Will a silver coin stay at the same VDI even when your machine is whispering to you? Too many rusty nails and scrap metal dug this year!!! Thanks in advance for your replies...

MXT related from The Prospecting Forum (4 replies)

The opinions relate to a number of recent topics.

I took a couple excerpts from Steve's Guide to Gold Nugget Detectors posted by Steve Herschbach
Hope he doesn't mind me posting this.

Four reasons for posting this here.
1. It is about our favorite general purpose detector.
2. It is about detecting gold an often talked about topic and this is nugget season here.
3. Reference to the ground tracking which is ground balance related.
4. Just great respect for Steve's opinion on the MXT.

MXT
Steve's Opinion - What can I say? The MXT has found many hundreds of ounces of gold at Ganes Creek, Alaska. The largest nugget I have found to date, a chunky 6.85 ounce handful, I found with an MXT. It was the machine of choice at Ganes Creek for good reason. While not as hot on tiny gold as it's cousin, the GMT, the MXT actually is smoother operating in mixed hot rocks than the GMT, allowing faint signals from large, deep nuggets to be more easily discerned. For hunting hot ground the 6" x 10" DD coil is a better choice than the stock concentric coil while the 4" x 6" Shooter DD coil is the way to go to enhance the MXTs small gold capability. The MXT Pro is the way to go as the Ground grab button alone is worth the few extra dollars. Bottom line is if you want a safe choice in a general purpose (nuggets, coins, beach, relics, etc.) machine you need look no farther than the MXT.

VXi
Steve's Opinion - The V3i has a dedicated Prospecting Mode and can be run at a relatively hot 22 kHz. Because it costs more, many people assume it must be even better than the MXT for prospecting. That, however, is not the case. The V3i was designed first and foremost as a powerful coin detecting machine. The MXT is based on the GMT circuit therefore has a superior ground tracking system. The bottom line is the V3i is a fantastic piece of technology, but the vast majority of the features you are paying for are not needed for nugget detecting. That said, the V3i can certainly find gold nuggets. I saw a proficient user find several ounces of gold at Ganes Creek using a V3i. But if prospecting is going to be one of the main goals then the MXT or some of the other detectors mentioned here could serve as well or better for less money.

MXT Killer Relic Mode (6 replies)

I was brushing up the MXT video but never paid to much attention to the relic mixed mode, just didnt like the sound, but the two tone ferrous, non ferrous mode caught my ear.In this mode iron produces a grunt ,and non ferrous produces a high tone this is a lot different than the standard relic mode pitch which is a nice crisp tone with a close or narrow sweep speed that gets awesome separation in nails. The area has been pounded by myself and others but produced targets that were missed using the elipse 5.3 coil in relic mode.To get these results switch to relic mode, turn to 0 discrimination, pinpoint switch forward. After running this way for awhile tryed turning disc. to 2 just where iron was eliminated, and pay attention to the VDI when you get a high tone.Note passed the nail board test with flying colors, also this is the standard MXT e series not the pro.I am confident that silver will soon appear in iron infested areas give it a try and give some feed back.Today in a 1885 church camp...........CEDAR

FIRST MXT HUNT (1 reply)

I took my MXT to local parks that i have hunted for years. loads of modern trash. the DD 6x10 was a little tricky to pinpoint. i was scratching my head in the chiplot when i kept getting zinc signal and squeezing the trigger- it pinpointed three places at 1 inch down within a couple inches-- 3 pennies. OK i thought something was wrong at first. a sweep over and the machine went nuts. 16 more pennies and a +18--nickel in a 1 foot diameter area. 24 cent value coin spill- for granddaughters piggy. i'll take it. most important --i am learning the machine. the DD was replaced at home with the 950-- much more to my liking. i do not have experience with a DD but have with a widescan. At home the previous owners worked on cars in the backyard --10 years ago- good grief-- i call it cleaning the environment. but-- with the 950 i picked up quarters and nickles 6 + down, with accurate ID. I like the coin/jewelry mode better for this environment- but the relic mode showed me a lot of debris in the dirt and where, including foil., and i did remove some of it. the relic mode in the park traced out large buried track rail and other things i know are there from my deep scanning Compass xp350 and Eldorado widescan and my gurus Nautilus units. its nice to pick a target out on top of this deep iron. i do see the advantage of switching modes to check an iffy target. i am now spoiled to pinpoint accuracy this machine has, and just recently also started using a handheld pinpointer a Bullseye.

not worth pictures but a couple of bucks change- and the coloration shows they have been down a while -70's coins-- and a few whatnots that i can see would mimic a coin- brass washers- etc. fewer tabs-- the old thin tang beavers are problematic here, showing 24-26 the double holes are a solid +22. the tab notch works pretty good.

i do see the advantage of quality headphones with volume control. the DD will take practice and i see it more for the country and relic hunting. i may explore a smaller 5.3 in the future for this trashpile area. Not new to Finds or metal detecting, an old Tesoro user, but new to the MXT. I have a Compass xp350, and Tesoros Eldorado original, Amigo II, and Silver Sabre Plus. I decided i needed an ID machine and a generous forum member set me up with the Series 3 Tracker, and a 950 and 6x10 DD Eclipse. WOW! As you can see I only had one unit with pinpoint. All mine are beep and dig-solid and proven, but time to step up to a more modern machine. I have been watching the videos and reading the manual- and going to order the Edge book. I have a friend with a DFX who will also help. He got me my first pin pointer Whites Bulls eye- which was another treat to me. My other detector friends are real old school but starting to need the whistles and bells with age! LOL!

I made my first test run in Buddy with DFX's yard and was surprised how easy it is to work. Much simpler than the DFX. Two tones is enough for a tone deaf person and the readout is big enough for my far sighted self to see without my reading glasses. It is comfortable to swing and light feeling which surprised me.

I read all the instructions but then have concentrated on coin/jewelery mode and relic mode since i live Middle Georgia USA. its 3+ hrs to the beach and many parts are banned being a state park designation, and the gold is in the mountains. We have small Civil War area and trashy trashy parks. So by not bothering with those settings its easier to learn the ones i will get to use regular.

I will have questions but will try to research before i post.

anyone in Middle Georgia--Macon Warner Robins let me know!

I look forward to posting finds and chatting with you good people. This ole dog is willing to learn some new tricks!
Easy Tone/Tarnish to cleaned silver (no replies)

I recently found my 2nd silver war nickel and shined it up with baking soda and water. It not worth much more than melt value, if any at all, so I'm not affecting its value. After shining it up, it really needed cleaned due to some stuck on junk near Jeffersons chin, I decided I wanted a rainbow tone or something near to that affect. I learned about a method using egg yokes due to their sulfur content and this is what I did...

Separate the yoke from an egg and discard the whites. Put the egg yoke in a tupperware with a lid and microwave just long enough to cook through. In my microwave this only took about 15 seconds for one egg yoke. Once it is cooked through, stir up the yoke and break into very small pieces. Place the clean shiny silver on top of the yoke and cover with the lid. Monitor and flip the coin every few hours and remove when you get the desired tone. Here is my war nickel after cleaning with baking soda and then again after placing in with the egg yoke for about 30 hours or so. I would assume 90% silver coins will acquire a tone at a different rate than this 30% silver nickel. This is the only time I have tried this and could only recommend it for similar scenarios where the coin has no room to drop in value. Don't mess around with coins that have a value beyond their silver content unless you really know what your doing and assume your own responsibility for any loss in value afterwards.

Also, I don't know how resilient this toning will be. Its possible it may not hold up to handling and might just smear off if rubbed. If you're going to put it in a placeholder right away it would be fine. If you don't like the toning you can easily remove it with the same method you cleaned the silver to begin with.

You have to click the image below to animate the before/after toning GIF.
<div id="div_5c50ac929f5a173b2e8728ae42900f1f"
