New sand scoop. Beach ready! (no replies)

I got my new sand scoop today for my beach vacations this year.
Last year, I bought a RTG Kick-It scoop, and it was great. I went with a bigger scoop this year.
The Kick-It was a 5" scoop with a short basket. This time I decided to go with a 6" scoop that is longer and with a thicker pole and supports. The back support is key so you can drive it into the sand with your foot without it collapsing. It's a little bit more weight, 3.4 lbs compared to 1.6 lbs, but it should be better in the surf. Both are light since they are aluminum. I think it makes a difference for beach hunting and not water hunting since I am out all day.
I use my Etrac on the dry sand and AT Pro in the surf. The bigger scoop should make a difference in the surf this year. I learned real quick, last year, that when you detect a target in the surf, you pretty much have one shot at scooping it before the next wave comes in and you have to find the target again, if it's not in your scoop.
A bigger scoop should be better, as I don't think I was getting evough 'dig' on the Kick-It scoop in the water. I still have to put a tether on my new scoop.
Here's a few pics. One of my new scoop, and the other of my old scoop and the homemade one I used before that. I still have the homemade one.

Some days a lot of wind helps find gold and silver (2 replies)

Have had moderate (15 to 25 mile per hour) winds coming out of the north west for two days. Nearly perfect direction to blow the water out of the tributary that the local beach sits on. Water was nearly two feet lower than normal; and that let me get the detector to places I had not gotten to before.

In spite of the wind, the surface had just little ripples (no waves); makes it easier to detect and to plant the scoop.

The take was $2.40 in coin, 1 lb. 5 oz. of lead, a Hayward Sterling silver pendant, a thin 10 K ring with green stones, a heart ring and a bracelet that I think are both junk, a copper pin and a stainless ring.

Many of the coins were encrusted. Two of the coins that I thought were pennies turned out to be dimes once I got the encrusted layer picked off. One of those two dimes, one is a pretty toasted Mercury dime; no date (only silver coin in the bunch). There are two wheat pennies without readable dates. Got 1940 and 1941 nickles and three nickles that I can't read dates. All the nickles are Jefferson. Quarters are all clad.

I included a picture of the coins as they came up as well as after chipping the encrusted stuff off.
Cheers,
tvr

Among these items was a criss pendant. The cross is silver with a gold link which attached it to a necklace. The cross was tarnished so bad that it had a purple, black look to it. Well I have just found a way to clean it back to it's original silver look. After I did that I was using my eye piece to examine it for markings. On the back is only "Avanti Spea" it smudges out after that. I was thinking the "does" might be spear? I don't know. Can anyone shed some light on this.
Thank you. Ferd

Atlantic City get away produced couple of keepers (5 replies)

Got away for a 4 day weekend to mark my wife's birthday. Disappointed that Pickles was closed. We were looking forward to one of their corned beef sandwiches. Will have to do that next trip.

Not a lot of targets to be found with the detector. Did find a small old brass piece and some small bits of copper. One wheat penny with the date completely worn off came out of the wet sand. One good target came up on the fifth scoop going after it in the wet sand; Oliver Peoples sun glasses. I was amazed I had not bent or broken them getting them up; even more amazed that the lenses were not badly scratched by the sand. Also surprised when I looked up what they go for new! Another good target was what looks like a New York City detective badge. Will need to research it more, the pictures found so far in searches do not have the "State of New York" on the badge like on the one I found.

On every trip we have made to Atlantic City we have found something old. This time my wife spotted a good sized piece of glass that had enough of the lettering on it to match it with a picture of a whole bottle. The piece of glass from the bottle dates to the late 1800's to early 1900's.

Along with the glass, the two of us eye spotted nearly 1/4 as much change between the boards of the board walk as I found with the detector in the sand. And to top it off, there was some 14K gold (two pieces) one with what tests as diamond and is about 1/3 carat size on a little stud; both spotted by my wife. I think the eye spotting beat the detecting on this trip!

First picture is of the detected stuff, second is the eye spotted stuff, third has bottles with the one in the middle that matches the writing on the piece of glass that was found laying on the sand.
Cheers,
tvr

Today I attempted it, while it was a lot of fun I did find it to be a bit difficult. I went along side of the local pier, the tide was extremely low so I ventured out pretty far thinking I would find lots of goodies. However, this was not the case, I did get a target or two but found it difficult to retreive the targets, the moving surf posed a problem and the visibility of the water was cloudy. After a couple of hours I"ll admit I got discouraged and went back to the shoreline, it was a bust there too.

Can anyone give me some useful tips for hunting in the surf? I really want to pursue this type of detecting but want to know what is required.

thanks ya"ll...HH !!!

Just picked up a whites dual field pi first day out (4 replies)

Well lately I've been getting into beach hunting more and more and picked up a dual field from whites. I must say for a pi its a good one and pretty deep as well. I hit a beach I go to on occasion to test it out. To start with the machine is pretty light and well balanced. The coil is 12 inches but skims pretty well in the water and behaves well as far as not moving to much with the waves. The headphones were a bit uncomfortable after 5 hours of use. My right ear was hurting a bit. I suspect from the headphones being very solidly built and have a tight fit. Hopefully they will loosen up a bit with use. Also the area where ones elbow fits was rubbing a bit on a vein in my arm . Which I later adjusted a bit. As far as the smoothness on the wet sand it was overall pretty good with an occasional blip. I had it on the factory triangle presets . It was an ok hunt found some clad and had a decent amount of targets in dry and wet sand. Overall I like the machine a lot. I also have a Tesoro sand shark pi and I must admit the headphones on the Tesoro are much more comfortable than the whites and the sand shark is a bit smoother on wet sand than the whites dual field Pi. But both are good detectors and a great value for a person looking for a good pi. Happy hunting to all cant wait for the next beach trip.

A great day....lots of sun, a little breeze and all the ice has pretty well melted. However, the water was "COLD" so I wore my chest waders and brought along my long up to the elbow neoprene hunting gloves. Interesting results......the pic speaks for itself. The AT pro got the easier stuff in the top 5-6 inches. The Infinium got the stuff at depths up to about 15 inches. I often use the Infinium in hunted out places because it puts signals back in the lower strata. And it goes "DEEP"....

Below is a pic of the neoprene gloves, which I purchased a Cabela's.

I headed out early this morning only to be greeted by angry surf and a couple of other hunters. I figured between lastnight's low tide and this morning it surely was scooped up by now. But in about 30 minutes I found it in waist deep water pretty much where they said he lost it. I contacted the wife as soon as I made it back to the car and she was sooo grateful. She just left here from picking it up.

Oh yeah, she mentioned she wanted to get her husband another cheaper ring so he wouldn't loose this one again so I sold her a nice inexpensive colbalt wedding band.
DC
<div id="div_4b6afb15d92de0d8f25430b4f05cb648"

Vibra quatic 2 pin Pointer :( (12 replies)

Hi guys my vibra quatic 2 under water pin pointer arrived yesterday, what a disapointment. It is support to be an under water pin pointer, but it doesn't pin point! It does detect metal, but you have to keep moving the pin pointer away and back to the target, so it's a metal detector not a pin pointer. I've already got an Excalibur which detects the targets, I needed an under water pinpointer to recover targets from in between rocks and on a bedrock with a light covering of sand where my scoop won't dig. It is very well made, and robust, but what good is a pinpointer if it only signals when you sweep the target? It doesn't enable you to actually pin point the target. Here in the uk the water can be very hard to see in, its tricky to locate small rings etc that's what I wanted a pinpointer for. My pro pointer is amazing, it signals as you get closer to the target, and when it's touching the target it signals continuously, perfect to pin point the target. This vibra quatic is just a detector, it doesn't pin point. Does anyone know if there is an underwater pin pointer on the market?
