I'll post some pics as soon as I've got the laptop sorted, but I did pull a 18 carat gold and diamond ring out before the handle snapped, weigh's 3.5 g and has a hallmark date of 1944. That's not to say there isn't good things under the surface, it just means we need a storm to expose those items that were pulled down and also pushed from the surf from the last storm and then you will see what the beach really has hidden. I think that you will find most items will be just behind the surf line. I would like to hear from some other old salts on this, anyone out there can add to this? This was an odd-ball storm. Yes I know there will a selected few out that there that will do well but I'm just trying to figure if I'm a bit confused and may need some beach re-education

Searched Couple of Days this week NJ Beaches (3 replies)

I was able to get out this week for a couple of hrs of hunting the NJ beaches in Ocean County. I went back to my favorite spot on Tuesday and found that 3 to 4 ft of sand came back in area that proved to be good spots. I researched that same area and found zero targets. I move around the beach and found a few coins.2hrs Several others were working and came up the same. One guy had some better luck in the wash. But still not very good.
I got out today for about an 1hr on a beach north of seaside and found lots of clad up high and one sterling metal.Total clad was 6.55 and 23 copper pennies. Either this was new brought back in after the storm or not searched since the storm. It was a remote beach and I had only 1hr to search. I was still hitting targets as I walked back to the truck. It killed me to not to stay. I will search on the way to work to see if its being replenished,or I just was lucky today.steve

What's the scoop on scoops? (13 replies)

I took the plunge this morning and called MrBill and ordered my first water detector! What a nice guy he is, and very helpful too with lots of knowledge. Thanks MrBill! I went with the Detector Pro Wader, as it seemed to fit my needs for my first water model. I can't wait to get down to Florida next week and start hunting.
Now, I need a scoop. Here are my needs. I am 6 ft, 200 lbs and have a few minor physical issues with my left wrist, neck and left knee, as I am pushing 50. I would like something that is somewhat light, yet durable. I plan to use it in wet/dry sand and shallow water. I will use it around non-rocky bottoms and would like to be able to use the bottom of my foot on the scoop to dig with when needed. Also, a hand grip half way up would be nice too. What about a rig for dragging/pulling it? Any ideas? Do they make adjustable ones and how do they work? Finally, not that price alone would determine a decision, it would be nice to find one that isn't too expensive.
I half-heartedly searched for a post on this matter to no avail, so if any of you would be so kind as to give me your 2 cents on What model and Where I can order a scoop that would fit my needs, it would greatly appreciated, as I need it to get one ordered asap. Thanks and HH!

What we need to is invent a Bobbie pin made out of anything but metal or one that disintegrates quicker. In the mean time, I hope the girls keep coming to the beach. (7 replies)

Hello All,

Thought I would post this to see if anyone is familiar with this. I found this chain this weekend and thought it was silver but now have my doubts. It is marked "Made in Italy" The only other markings are "T1" on either sided of the clasp. No "925" marking anywhere. When I got home and washed it I noticed small flakes of plating on my hands which is not usually a good sign. The base metal looks a lot like silver but it may be some other metal. An Internet search provided little help in identifying what the T1 markings meant. The T1 could possibly be TI which may mean titanium. Just not sure. So, I'm throwing myself on the mercy of the court. Does anybody know what this is?

Harvdog

Fill in your holes! (15 replies)

Now I really hate to complaint about this I know this is the beach. But if your not scooping in the water or really wet sand where there is wave action, give a little kick of sand back in the hole. I was on the beach two days with about 11 different guys that I saw go by me, none of which I know. I would say I saw very few fill in there holes. Where I was there were lots of people coming down to take a look see at the damage. There was always 30 people looking off one of the many boardwalk area's that once had stairs. Many were walking the beach not the wet sand! It looked like a bomb zone. I saw one lady take a tumble in a large hole left by somebody. I also saw lots of beer/soda cans that were dug and left next to the open hole. If you dig it and its too big to take with you put it back in the hole and kick sand in it. This is not a big deal as we are in beach sand. But this storm left very little sand at all. One scoop and I was in red dirt! There was no sand! That's why I was digging coins from the 1870's.These people remember what they see, makes us look really bad in the public eyes! They also remember when you knock on the19th century home to ask to detect!!!!
steve

Some of the people more familiar with the area said we really needed to be north of where we were at, but the bridge was closed due to flooding.

The sand looked like drifts from a snow storm. Some areas piled high, others cut. Every where I walked the sand was soft, even at the bottom of the cuts and ankle deep at low tide. Made for a work out. There was a lot of lumber in the water, so that was a no go zone.

Saw one probably junk ring, but may have been silver, and one report of a gold ring.

For me, some change, couple of tokens and some cheap jewelry. The little soccer ball may be silver; ID'd like it and is heavy for it's size. The other little round ball had a stainless earring post on it that broke off in the pouch. That ID'd as nickle, but looks like pot metal with most of coating worn away. Bracelet is copper with most of plating gone.

One area had some large shells; and I did not have a bucket, so I filled my pockets.

Hope those who can get out as the beach settles down can find some hot spots ... and check out the areas a little north when the bridge opens!
tvr
