Following Rookies... (2 replies)

Howdy--

A hunting buddy of mine had some trouble with his DFX - audio and sensitivity issues. It's on its way back to the factory for refurbishing. He being a detecting addict and fearing withdrawal, I offered to let him borrow my DFX until his is returned. We planned to meet at a vacant lot pick up my DFX and swing the coils for a while. I arrived at the lot early and decided to put on a program suitable for the areas that we hunt. I left my V3i in the truck and tested my program. Over the last few years, I had probably hunted this lot 5 or 6 times and had dug silver and wheat-cents. Various parts of this lot had been overgrown but with our drought there were now cleaner areas. It didn't take long for me to realize that there had been a "rookie" hunting there as there were several deep unfilled holes. About 3 feet from one of the rookies holes, I got a 74-75 signal and dug a 1959-D memorial cent. When I re-checked the hole, a few inches towards the rookie hole I dug a few pull-tabs and then a few more inches towards the rookies hole I dug a Falstaff beer cap. When I rechecked that hole, I got a solid 88-89 reading and it pinpointed tight at 5.5 inches. The 1953-D Franklin sure did put a big smile on my face!
I love following rookies! Best of luck and...

Happy Hunting!
Blind Squirrel

Hit a park on the way home with the factory coin & jewelry program as well as the DD coil it came with. In one hour I pulled a 51 wheat! I was stoked! Today I hit my home park which I thought was picked pretty clean. WRONG! Pulled a 1919 wheat followed by a 1915 wheat in a 15x15 area at depths of 5"+! One of which was just above a small rusty nail. I can't praise this machine enough! Two hours of use and the hobby is fresh again! Everywhere has become virgin with this thing in my hand! I have half a mind to personally thank :whites:!

I know this place to be tight woods hunting so I used a small 5" coil. To my surprise the town workers had been in the woods cutting and hauling fallen trees from the Sandy storm. There where bulldozer roads everywhere- scraped clean of everything. The bushes, vines, small trees, breyers and poison ivy where all gone for now. I did about 4 hours with the GT and called it a day. Lots of targets. Went back today with my DFX equiped with the Detech 13" Ultimate coil and a hot coins and jewelry program. Honestly, I did not find any silver or gold but the wheaties I found told me I was in the right place. The oldest I found was 1925. Found lots of very old household goods like lantern parts, silverware, plumbing fixtures, cut nails and non-metallics like colored glass, ceramic shards and stone piles/foundations. I love my DFX and it will always have a place in my arsenal. I also love all the available coils and accessories and the ability to tweak the detector's programs to fit any coil change and soil difference. HH. Matt

CBEG suggestions (9 replies)

I use the DFX-300 with a bigfoot coil on St. Augustine Florida beaches. I've been experimenting with manual ground balancing. In the book "Digging deeper with the DFX" the author states "Course GEB will only maintain its settings between 117 and 135, but can be used for ground balancing purposes half way down below 119 and half way above 130. Any ground balance attempt approaching these limits are doomed to 1. excessive non-linearity 2. complete loss of depth 3. extremely noisy operation. I'm not sure I understand what that means.(Halfway down below 119 and half way above 130)
I need help understanding this. I use dual frequency best data on the wet sand with CGEB set at 115 with auto track off. And on the dry sand I'm using 15kHz with CGEB setting at 50. Fine GEB on both is 0. I'm leaving auto track off because the DFX can't balance on this ground. Am I understanding correctly that with these settings I should be losing all depth? The way I have the DFX set it runs quite quiet and I do find a lot of targets on the surface few inches. I don't know if I'm missing deep targets. I also find almost no gold though I'm not sure if its just because there's no gold there. With testing on burying a thin gold ring I can find it about 2-3 inches down only. With testing with a thin gold necklace I can find it only if its 2 inches down or less. Is there a best CGEB setting when looking for thin gold rings and necklaces? In other words can you manipulate the CGEB and then modify the other settings to better locate thin gold? This is the program I'm using for wet sand areas.
Target Volume:60

Audio Threshold: 40

Tone: User Select 231

Audio Discrimination: On

Silent Search: Off

Mixed Mode: Off

AC Sensitivity: 70 DC 55

Backlite: off

Viewing Angle 25

Ratchet PinPoint: OFF

SAT Speed: 10

Tone ID: ON

VCO: ON

Modulation: Off

AutoTrac: Off,

TracView: Off

AutoTrac Speed: 8

AutoTrac Offset: +1

Track Inhibit: On

Course GEB 115

Fine GEB: 0

Block Edit: Reject -95 to -81, Accept -80 to +95

Learn Accept: Off

Learn Reject: Off

Recovery Speed:30

Bottlecap Reject: 1

HotRock Reject:3

Sweep Speed: 2

Ground Filtering:3

Visual Discrimination: Off

ICONS: Off

VDI Sensitivity: 86

DC Phase: DC On

Graph Averaging: On

GraphAccumlate: On

Fade Rate: 05

PreAmp Gain: 3

2 freq best data

VDI Normalized: On

This is the program I use for dry sand

Target Volume: 60

Audio Threshold: 40

Tone: User Select 231

Audio Discrimination: On

Silent Search: Off

Mixed Mode: Off

AC Sensitivity:77

DC Sensitivity:60

Backlite: off

Viewing Angle 25

Ratchet PinPoint: OFF

SAT Speed: 7

Tone ID: ON

VCO: ON

Modulation: Off

AutoTrac: Off,

TracView: Off

AutoTrac Speed: 8 8 8 8

AutoTrac Offset: +1

Track Inhibit: On

Course GEB 50

Fine GEB: 64

Block Edit: Reject -95 to-81 Accept -80 to +95

Learn Accept: Off

Learn Reject: Off

Recovery Speed: 30

Bottlecap Reject: 1 3

HotRock Reject: 3

Sweep Speed: 1

Ground Filtering:4

Visual Discrimination: Off

ICONS:on

VDI Sensitivity:80

DC Phase: DC On

Graph Averaging: On

GraphAccumlate: On

Fade Rate: 05

PreAmp Gain:2

Correlate: 15k only

VDI Normalized: On

Do you have any suggestions on changes that will better help me find that thin gold ring or the thin gold necklace for either the dry or wet sand settings I'm using now? And by trash I mean pulltabs everywhere. It's a picnic area that I tried hitting with my Ace 250 with 0 luck. I'm not interested in gold in this area, just silver. Would you disc the pulltab range out? Or at least part of it? I'll probably leave the Accept range down to -45 but I can see digging pulltabs all day if I leave it open from -45to +95. I'll probably use a slightly modified HI PRO program. Do you think I'll be hurting my chances of finding silver if I disc the pulltabs out? My concern is silver near a pulltab and not getting the silver signal because its rejecting the nearby pulltab. I think if I get my recovery speed and sweep speed right I might be ok. Any thoughts?

My boys and wife went to bed so at 10:30pm tonight I took the DFX into my tiny backyard, flipped it on, made a pass one way and got a signal. Checked both ways and it was singing. I've gone over this spot no less than a half dozen times. This was the first time with the 8x6 and the program I've been using and tweaking. The wheat is nothing fancy, you can't really even read the date. I think it's a 1942 but it's got that patina so I don't want to rub it (I learned my lesson on a 1919 wheat that I cleaned and basically took the entire face off). This one was only about 4" deep. I really just wanted to test my "new-to-me" Sunray DX-1, which I also L-O-V-E!! The wheat penny was just a nice surprise. I also dug a tiny tiny skinny grommet at about 4" and a rusty nail at 5".

It finally came today. I through it on the DFX and went onto my side yard at no earlier than 10pm tonight (with temps in upper 20s). Just wanted to see how I could adjust settings with this coil vs the stock 12" I've struggled with. This section of my yard is about 15' by 15'. I've hit this same area at least a half dozen times with the other detectors I've owned. I only swept for not even 1 minute and got an iffy signal. It would VDI out around +84 range I think only every few sweeps at best. I popped the plug, nothing there, dug some more, nothing there, dug more and thought it must be junk except that the VDI was coming in more consistently positive. Finally I scooped another handful out and swept back over the hole and it was silent. Swept over the dirt I pulled out that last time and got a solid hit. It's hard to tell in the picture but I scratched right on the face of the penny which is probably because it was right at the bottom of the hole that last dig. I would have never thought it would have ID'd a 9" penny at all. I only covered about a 6' by 6' section of that side yard because I ended up digging the other junk in the picture (plus I had surgery last Thursday and should not be doing any of this for 4 weeks). I'm really impressed with this little coil so far. I modified the Relic program and only had the AC sens at 67, DC at 50, PAG 2, Mixed Mode on.

DFX vs. All (4 replies)

The DFX is my first and only detector. I have considered trying an E-Trac, CTX3030, V3i, and a few others, but I have yet to see an advantage that any of those detectors offer over the DFX which would have a lot of value for me. USB interface, GPS, etc... all sexy, but not things that will help me dig the rich stuff (mostly jewelry, since there aren't a lot of old coins here).

The thing that I have come to appreciate more than anything else about the DFX is its array of target identification data which allows me to separate good targets from bad in high trash environments. There is, of course, a learning curve to this but with Larry's, cjc's, and your help on this forum I have made significant improvements in my target IDing abilities.

I'm looking into PI machines for an entirely different purpose, but that's another story.

What advantages do other detectors in its class have over the DFX that hold value for you? Are there other detectors that you would recommend trying that will help me find the rich stuff?

Necklaces and bracelets (9 replies)

I've read metal detectors can not find plain thin necklaces or bracelets because each link is picked up by the detector and it confuses the machine and the machine nulls it out.

1. Is this true?
2. Is there a way around this?

I hunt on the St. Augustine beach. Here we have renurished sand and with that sand is 1000s of pieces of iron. So for me, when I listen to the steady hum its not steady, its broken often because I'm running over so much iron. These pieces are usually no bigger than a fingernail.

Our beaches here have very low minerals so I found so far in testing that running the DFX300 in dual frequency best data mode with Autotrack off and CGEB set to 115 gets quite deep and is pretty quiet. My concern is if salt is 0-10 and thin gold necklaces are 0 to 10 can the dfx-300 find them? I've read that digging the nulls can produce necklaces but its not practical for me to dig every null since they are 1000s if that's even true.

Any advice on finding gold or silver necklaces on the beach?

What is a general expectation of usable hours for the rechargeable pack last before needing recharged? I only use the "overnight" option when charging. What is the expectation for the AA pack? I plan to use regular alkaline AA (Duracell Procell, to be exact). I found that on a "full" charge my rechargeable pack only lasted about 4-5 hrs before dropping to mid to upper 8's. At this level I found that the machine does not operate properly (erratic and chatty). I don't hunt with the backlight on. And the hours of hunting were all done within 7 days so its not that it was sitting for a long period of time.

Threshold not maintaining (14 replies)

I did a search on "maintaining threshold" and just simply "threshold" but couldn't seem to find an answer specifically to this question. I set the threshold in settings so I can hear it. When I switch back to search I do hear it but it constantly fades in and out. Once in a while I'll also get a high pitch squeel for a second. I figured maybe the threshold was nulling out over iron but don't think that is really the case. There can't be that much iron at the site I was at today. I then decided to hold the DFX at waist level and see what it did. It still faded in and out (obviously I'm no where near iron at waist level). I'm using stock 12" coil, AC around 65-72, DC around 30-50, PAG at 2-3. What could be causing the fading in and out of the threshold? It's almost every couple seconds it fades for a second then comes back. And what would be causing the high pitch squeel that lasts for a second? The squeel is almost like it's gone over a target but then won't repeat if I sweep over that same spot, so I don't believe it's anything in the ground.
