Medal from a State Fair (2 replies)

Went Detecting today, Well actually started out filling a deer feeder, then went to look for Moral Mushroom but saw fish in the creek, so went back to my truck and got out the stink bait, put the line in the water and started looking around my surroundings and saw about 20 yards away a man made rock something or another within the bank of creek. It was about 5 foot wide, and 6 foot tall and kinda arched in the middle. I wasn't catching any fish so went and got my detector to scan the area a bit. On the third dig I found this state fair medal. I've been trying to look it up on line to find out what year its from but can't find anything on it. From what I have found I think it's from the later 1800's or early 1900's since the Kansas state fair has been in Hutchinson since 1913. Does anyone have any suggestions to how I can find out more about it?? I've typed in everything I can think of to pull up something about what years the Kansas state fair was in Wichita Kansas and can't really get any information that tells me exactly.

Help on Safari? (5 replies)

My friend has a Safari, and we were comparing coin signals in a field yesterday. Whenever I had him come and compare when my CTX3030 had a coin signal, he usually got a 12 or 17 on his Safari. After about 4-5 signals like this, I had him turn 90 degrees after initially scanning the targets. When he turned 90 degrees, he would then get either a number in the 30s or a 40. I'd dig the target and it would be a penny or dime. I'm thinking he might have a bad coil. He was running in stock coin mode with auto sensitivity. Is this behavior consistent with Safaris, or is it user error, or a problem with his machine. He was using a very slow sweep speed.

Thanks for any tips!

I have tried several settings blacking out most of the spectrum. All that has happened is I have gotten more confused and more frustrated. I have tried using my own coins to try and understand the tones, but when I take it to the park everything pops up as the same and no matter what the number says, its almost always a penny. the only time I get a clear difference in sounds is when it is right on or under the surface. I don't usually have this much difficulty with these type of things, but I am struggling on all ends. Can I please get some advice and feedback to save my sanity. I know these machines work, I'm just not getting it. Thank you

Safari Find Rings of Different Metals. (2 replies)

Cranked up the Safari on a couple school fields. The 42 Merc. dime was a total surprise as the school was built in the mid 70's. Earring marked .925 on back. The 950 PD ring has a citron stone and was found on the field when hunting with Jim D and Magnum and we all found rings. 7 total for the evening. Came in as a 35 which in low trash setting is a bottle cap 99% of the time but had a really high tone for a 35. The gold ring weights 8.7g and is my 4th gold, 18th ring for the year. Had a copper penny close to it so gave a bouncy signal. Checked with PP and it showed 2 targets. Removed penny and got a solid 22 warm sound. Funny I have found more rings this month than silver coins. Picked up a Sovereign GT this week for beach hunting so hope to have some test posts this week. Thanks for looking JR

It's pretty ornate --I like it Next I found a button that says U.S. Indian Service on it--never found one of these before! Any one else ever dig one of these?? It looked like a good spot, glass shards every where --real trashy lookin --screw caps were even sproutin out of the ground--perfect !! Started digging up some misc. junk as usual--including some screwcaps, that hadn't sprouted yet I probally was there about an hour when I got a jumpy signal that sounded good it was jumpin around 37-38-39 on my Safari--well let's see what it is I dug down about 4 inches and loosened up the dirt, as I was scoopin the dirt out I saw the edge of something round I grabbed it, and I had found, my first walking liberty half:clapping:. Been detecting 3 yrs now and I finally found one!!! the next item found was the bell shaped relic that says --Good Roads-- on it. I dug 3 buckles-- a lipstick tube and a a key. I dug up a small jewelry item missing some stones but pretty neat. I dug A TOTAL of 27 wheats today, and only 16c in modern coins--not a good spot if your lookin for clad!! But a good spot if your lookin for silver and screwcaps!! Today, after I dug the walker, the silver just kept poppin outta the ground.:clapping: I ended the day with 11 silver coins:beers: When I got home and was lookin at all my stuff- I had one coin about the size of a nickel, that was all black and totally encrusted--you couldn't see and details on it at all!! I was thinkin it was maybe a token -because I had nickels disked out. So before bed, I threw it in some vinegar, and let it soak over night. When I got up I pulled the mystery coin out and gave it a rinse. It was a-- nickel???? I grabbed a magnifying glass and gave it a closer look --yup a nickel ??? I then turned it over and looked at the reverse side --yup a nickel ---I started to set it down and I suddenly realized it wasn't your average Jefferson nickel------ there was an S mintmark above the building:clapping: with this I now had 12 silver coins:beers: Last pic is my biggest trash pile ever from about 9 hrs digging! Thanks for lookin and listening and good luck to all!!! Tony AZ

First time out with Safari (4 replies)

Took the Safari out on it's maiden voyage today. I used the tips I've learned from this forum and put them to use. YES the Safari is not a turn on and go machine. I blacked out everything from 32 and lower. Went to a picked over park and in an hour of hunting found three memorial pennies and an old Jack Daniels belt buckle. I did everything I could to try and ignore the TID's and listen to audio that had consistent tone....and it worked. If I didn't know any better, I would have been digging EVERYTHING. Once I get more comfortable with it, I will go back and hit the deeper targets. Can't wait to go back out!!!

( North East U.K.). Depth amazed me - picking up £1.00 coins at over 12" deep. Best find was £2.00 coin at just over 14". ( I checked the depths against a ruler I have painted onto blade and shaft of my spade.)

No Gold. No Silver (no replies)

I am ordering a new Safari which I should get in a week or so. I know, from what I read, that I should practice with burying coins, silver and gold to see how the machine reacts. Here is my dilemma... we are on the Oregon Coast volunteering for the State Parks who in turn give us camping space for our trailer. Having to reduce the amount of items we were bring to the coast, we left our limited amount of jewelry back in NJ. Any ideas on how to plant our garden to learn the machine?

Richard

I was using a barber quarter at about 10 inches and a Indian head at 7 inches .
