bottle bigins to tell a story of when , and why (2 replies)

Thear is a spot hear in the Rum river vally flood plane that once had a small shack on it no foundation , but just a well point and a small garden , as you can still see asperigrass growing amongs the trees of the woods it is an earea that floods, easaly and when it floods can only be reached by boat as many Ox bows cut it off unless its dry , I have been trying to get a exact date on this place, - it shows on no old maps just west of the well lay a suface dump with old cans enamil ware, and some beer bottles the crocks seem to date from the 30,s as non are before 1897 but this bottle do tell a story - i positivly dated it to the year of 1937 it is a retunable , and that cliched a date I also found a few wisky bottles dated 1933 and after but nothing from the mid 1940,s and my conclusion is that during the great depression , a family lived hear , it was off the books, and it was dry years so it never would have flooded and they could have got back to the little high ground by the river , they lived in this spot untill the war and then all activity stopped THEY JOINED THE ARMY and left the spot or got a job because of the war efort .. but thru the depression they cut wood went fishing for food in the rum river , they trapped , they hunted the woods for game, as i find the old shells all over the woods and many date inthe 30,s but the war took them away from this little spot and they found jobs and after the war it began to flood again, so now a perfect snapshot of a 1930,s squatters shack remans , I hope to get a better trail out to it and look for some things the old token was found close by , and you could bet 1 penny was alot in those days you can see the wear marks on the bottom of the bottle shows it has been returned I know its not valuble but it tells a story of those days and what they had to do to make it

Underneath these long forgotten structures are vast deposits of antique glass bottles of every description, and even some early Canadian pottery pieces.

The excavators dont go down all the way, leaving much of the privy pit intact for discpvery next century. I had my head phones on checking things out. I heard this sound outside my earphones. I looked around and did not see anything, started to put my phones on and heard it again.I knew what is was then, I stepped back a few feet. It was real thick with brush and trees . I squatted down to see through the brush and there he was a 300+pound hog running right at my """". I threw my detector down, turned and ran like heck. If that oak tree that lay ed over wasn't there ,it would have probably got me.I had a shovel but dropped getting up on the log. that darn hog ran over my detector .I set still and looking around I counted 12 or so of them darn hogs including the one that bad me at bay. they finally left the area and i got my detector and shovel and got the heck out of there. Didn't find anything but got the '''''' scared out of me ! KEEP your ears in tune and your eye's looking around .

Detector video's on YouTube....... (2 replies)

I would like to personally thank all of those detectorists who are taking the time to make videos of their metal detectors, and the items that they're finding with them.

I can clearly see how it takes some degree of effort (& patience) to both metal detect, and shoot a video at the same time. It looks more like it's a pain in the tail rather than somethng that's really fun to do. I therefore wanted to say that I fully appreciate all the effort that goes into the making of these type of videos, and applaud those who contribute their time to post their individual experiences for all to see.

Having stated that, I need to word the remainder of this post very carefully, as it is not my intention to embarrass, ridicule, or shame any of the video's in any matter shape or form.

However, as a potential buyer of some of these detectors that I have watched on YouTube, I need to say something:

When people are watching these video's they really don't care about your favorite classical, jazz, or rock music. They generally want to hear the DETECTOR beep, pop, sizzle, chime, whine, alarm, or honk. We even enjoy hearing the excitement of a detectorist finding a KEEPER, or share in the anger and grief over finding a piece of junk.

Thank you again for your informative video's.

J in FL

Hurricane Bottle (2 replies)

After the flood waters from Hurricane Sandy receded here in Rockaway Beach,NY, I found this bottle among the pile of debris in front of my house. Anyone have any ideas as to age or any info about who Matt Nester was? I'm guessing around 1880 to 1890 and either beer or soda. It's in surprisingly good condition after being knocked around by the storm and traveling from wherever it came from. An interesting addition to my collection.
Ed
