Just picked up a whites dual field pi and hit the beach for some testing (2 replies)

Well lately I've been getting into beach hunting more and more and picked up a dual field from whites. I must say for a pi its a good one and pretty deep as well. I hit a beach I go to on occasion to test it out. To start with the machine is pretty light and well balanced. The coil is 12 inches but skims pretty well in the water and behaves well as far as not moving to much with the waves. The headphones were a bit uncomfortable after 5 hours of use. My right ear was hurting a bit. I suspect from the headphones being very solidly built and have a tight fit. Hopefully they will loosen up a bit with use. Also the area where ones elbow fits was rubbing a bit on a vein in my arm . Which I later adjusted a bit. As far as the smoothness on the wet sand it was overall pretty good with an occasional blip. I had it on the factory triangle presets . It was an ok hunt found some clad and had a decent amount of targets in dry and wet sand. Overall I like the machine a lot. I also have a Tesoro sand shark pi and I must admit the headphones on the Tesoro are much more comfortable than the whites and the sand shark is a bit smoother on wet sand than the whites dual field Pi. But both are good detectors and a great value for a person looking for a good pi. Happy hunting to all cant wait for the next beach trip.

I bought it new in March of 2012. It was my primary machine through November 2012 and then I picked up an E-trac that I'm using now. The DFX has some expected cosmetic wear, but functions perfectly. I put a @#$%& screen cover on it almost from the start so the screen is in great condition. I still have the original box. Has both the rechargeable battery pack and the AA one. The charger. A Bullseyes II pinpointer. A Whites 6X10 DD coil and the original 12" White's concentric that came with it. And the "Digging Deeper with the DFX" spiral bound book. I'm thinking of asking $750 shipped for the package. Is that too high? Too low? I've searched around to see what a fair price is, but can't find many that have been listed for sale. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Enjoying the SST more every trip out, And question about Threshold? (9 replies)

Finally getting accustomed to the SST tones, In the beginning struggled with the iron and lowest tone but every trip out since appears I'm getting the two lowest tones down. Plus, Before I purchased the SST read somewhere it had six tones but didn't know for sure until this weekend when testing some recent targets pulled from various hunts. Yup! It has six tones and enclosed a pic of six various targets each sounding off one of the six tones, At first thought foil and nickel were the same tone and didn't know between nickel and zinc penny is another tone. Sure enough six tones not four

Enclosed are today's finds from a fresh water lake and couple of tot lots minus the square nail which I tossed in the pic to represent iron.

Have a question, Let's say the SST had a threshold while operating in disc mode would this enhance or take away performance? It's a silent search detector but as I raise the gain to max noticed a little threshold does bleed in, But let's say the SST had a threshold no matter what the Gain is would this enhance or take away performance?

Thanks for looking,
Paul (Ca)

Other detectors I have you put them in all metal mode sweep the ground then ground balance. What is the best practice for the DFX as far as this goes?

Also the one I picked came with the 950 coil and a D2 coil are there any times that I wouldn't want to use the D2 on it? I never use my concentric coil on my other machine since I got a DD.

Thanks,
Chadd

For example White's Coinmaster Pro uses 8 kHz and Garrett Ace 250 is 8.25 kHz. Surely there is not much change in 0.25 kHz for one brand to use one frequency than the other.

Then the obvious question is why doesn't every brand/model use the same frequency for the same purpose? For example 7 kHz for coins, and 18 kHz for gold.

Beyond the set frequency in a MD, several MD's allow the user to switch the frequency. Oddly it isn't marketed to allow people to necessary find different items, it is often marketed as a option for electric interference problem solving or for competition events to prevent overlapping other MD signals. Surely jumping from a 7 kHz to 15 kHz for example would vastly alter the person's outcome while detecting.

Need a holder for your pro pointer? (2 replies)

I was looking for an alternate Pro pointer holder for my detector....some are 30 bucks and I'm not sure if they are practical or if they work. Some don't work on all detectors. I don't always wear a belt and sometimes wear shorts or other clothes that doesn't have a good pocket for the pro pointer to fit into.....or it falls out of the pocket a lot. Sometimes I don't want to get what I'm wearing muddy so I carry it. I sometimes have to carry both the pointer and the digger in one hand which is a pain.

Here's the answer.....and it will cost you....a couple pieces of Velcro tape....just like the Velcro tape pieces that come with a lot of metal detectors but most of us don't use. I can now use the factory holster that was taking on dust in the closet. You can take it off/on in a snap and just toss the holder in the washer for cleaning. Simple and works for all detectors!

I call it a Jholder.

Almost fainted with this one! (23 replies)

I got a pass to hunt after work today. Hit the town baseball field that used to the the high school football field from 1935-1968. About 30 minutes into the hunt out in deep right field I pulled my oldest coin to date. Had to sit down right there for a while. Looks to be in pretty good shape.

I will try to get in touch with the head of my town historical society tomorrow. I heard through a few sources that he used to detect. He would also know what was there before. It could have come in with fill dirt?? It happens.
I did notice that I put a small scratch on the upper rim area. Thankfully it was not on the face anywhere. When I first dug the hole, I pinpointed a small rusty nail down around 5 inches. When I rescanned the hole it still showed a signal down lower in the center. I was thinking another nail. That was how I got careless. Never in my wildest dreams did I think one of these would pop up. In the 30 minutes prior to finding it I pulled 1 quarter, 4 dimes, and 5 pennies from about 4-5 inches down. So you can understand why it surprised me so much.
<div id="div_f05697472fab8fc244090ba1b091f24d"
