A fix for UW. (Awful Day) (no replies)

Probably my worst hunt of the year. One hour 15 minutes in a pasture that serves as a sled hill during the winter. I guess I wasn't into it today because I usually do better there. One of those pennies is a wheat. The feather is sterling silver and part of an earring I guess. No nickels. No quarters.

The Half Crown came from a convenience store on my way to the field. The clerk/owner was ranting about finding it in his drawer. I told him I collect foreign coins and I'd take it off his hands. He said he'd have to get 50 cents for it which I was happy to do. It's the size of a US half dollar but only 50% silver. Still 3-4 bucks worth of silver. What I don't get is that this guy comes from either India or Pakistan which were both British Empire. You'd think the guy would have seen one at some time. I have come across about 5 or 6 of these in the past year either at the store or at the bank. I might have to start collecting them. FYI 1946 was the last year they were minted in silver so I was a little lucky.

So here you are UW. A hunt that will make you glad you stayed home.

Chris

Sea Hunter falsing fix (no replies)

Am wondering if anyone has tried this trick to stop their Mark 2 from falsing when the control bow is splashed by waves. I have heard that this is a fix for the Tiger Shark guys. They are using silicon or plummers tape to completely cover the coil connection at the box. Apparently this is where the problem is for the Tes machines. The tape molds to itself when wrapped over the connector and waterproofs it. Anyone on this forum try it?

Scorpion Goldmine hunt in Oregon... (2 replies)

Hi All,

Well finally got some weather clearing. Seems at 1:00 everyday the fog clears, so I decided to find a gold mine Ive been researching....AND I FOUND IT! Private property didnt hold me back this time as my research was spot on with all the time I have from the rain and thanks to USGS website. There are spots of BLM land all over the place with mines on them. Priate property all over also surrounding it. Just got to find the gaps to be able to get to BLM and the access points..its definatly not advertised.

Ok so the mine is near Gold Hill, Or. As I have been looking in this area ever since I dredged there this year because California kicked us out from dredging. So now I am seeing where the gold in the river comes from.
So heres the pics...got no gold..but only got 2 hour hunt in and alot of it was getting familiar with the WHOLE mine area. Then to return again with a light to go in the mine (maybe).

The Scorpion was fun to use...very sensitive. More stable than I had thought it would be for a manual machine. I used it wide open power. I adjusted it every once and a while..like shifting gears in a car..old school... oh yeh! Slight adjustments also, I mean SLIGHT. Kept it a bit on the positive side but sometimes I also had it right on balanced no negitive or positive threshold variation.

The pics show the mine shaft which appears to be fairly deep. Another shaft with rope going into it which leads to the larger mine and is the better entry point. A pic of the stamp mill just right of the mine up on top side.
And a pic of your humble Scorpion user narrator. (me, duh). And the crappy finds....some of the finds were from last week I had a short hour hunt along the Rogue River, like the fish lure and most of the lead.

Oh, I also saw a beautiful Bobcat cross in front of me as I was leaving the area about 40 feet in front of my truck. Big ole feet he had. Small stubby tail. Alittle bigger than the ones in Geiorgia.

Till next hunt,
Alan

Getting over the flu so barely had the energy to dig rather alone write my posts so sit back and enjoy some great finds with some good bouys!

Lone Amigo in a Geese Minefield
(hunt #1)

Couldn't stand it! A super day out and I was home out of action suffering from the flu and operating at about 40% with the other 60% made up by trips to the bathroom and trips to the fridge for ice water.

That was it! So I grabbed the detector, a roll of Royal and headed to a private park hoping to last at least a half hour and get some fresh air. Well me son I was greeted by a "school" of crows in the tree squawking and talking up a storm....no peace here then I made my way to the water front and was greeted by a chemical mine field laid out by Canada Geese. Lord love a duck they would put any dog to shame for doing the "dew." Anyway I navigated through their trap and picked up some coinage and a few biological agents that I decontaminated in the lake. Feeling as green as their mines I headed home after only 55 minutes with two captured dinkies and 40 coins @ $ 4.35.
<div id="div_d9b72f9186bb075fd3b63502822b8846"

Is there something lower than being in the dog house? Find out when I get home.

Anyway we motored down the south shore to our island haunt and did the dew with Navy Davy unearthing a first for him that really rang his bell...crotter bell that is and a nice one at that.

Was a great day with little wind , sunshine galore and for November a bonus digging day that we took full advantage of popping coins here and there til near dark and headed slowly back to the car swinging as we went. Near the well (those that I have taken there know where I mean) got a super bell tone from the old Garrett and out popped this puppy! I can see why I bought one brand New Oct 24. Had to send it back after using it 3 times with one of the knobs shaking in the machine. And called to check on it today and they said coil was also bad. I only used the stock coil one time because I had been using the 4" coil.
To there credit They had a super fast turn around but with the detector being dropped from there lineup I have zero confidence in it now.
questions about metal detecting with the ACE 250 (2 replies)

Helllo everyone!

My name is Matt and I am new to this forum. I have been using a metal detector for many years. Last month I bought an ACE 250 garrett metal detector. I am enjoying using the detector while I still can since the ground is not frozen yet. I have a few questions about using the detector and I have been unable to find answers in this forum to them.

First, I go detect over an area and the detector beeps and reads a penny 4 inches down. So I dig a hole about 4 inches. I then go over all of the dirt that i pulled out of the hole and finally check the hole to see if the target is still in there. But for some reason the detector reads that the target has moved to the perimeter of the hole. So i dig that side and the target moves to the perimeter of the hole again. Now I can not find the target. Am I doing something wrong? Why is this happening and is there a way to correct this?

Second, is there a good sensitivity for finding coins? I dont think that any minerals in the soil I am detecting would have an affect on it. I put the sensitivity low and i cant find many coins and miss alot of targets. If i put the sensitivity high, then I get alot of signals and they are all over the place. I have found out that older coins (pre 1900) are more easily detected using a higher sensitivity. Which area in the sensitivity range do you think would work best?

Thanks for answering my questions in advance. i really appreciate it.

Matt

Garrett Pro Pin pointer (4 replies)

Turned 50 this year, My gift to myself was the Garrett P.P. Along side My Ace 250. I tested it in my front yard, Without the Ace it found targets 2 inches down! Next day I went to A park where I had some good finds before. I could not believe how fast I could recover A target and move onto the next. Alot of times I had two targets and marked one so I could recover the other one. And so on. One insistence I dug a dime, Moved to my mark and dug A Diamond ring.
The next time out I was in A trashy area, I decided to dig A weak signal. The Pin Pointer put me on target, I left the P.P. on and set it aside, It went off! Marked it. After digging Trash, I went back to the mark. Bingo, I Pop ed out A kids 10k. Gold ring. (Toe Ring?)
After that I leave it on, until I'm done digging.:yikes:

Does Your Pro Pointer Do This (4 replies)

This is the depth I'm getting with the first unit I bought just last month.

1c - 1 9/16"
5c - 1 7/8"
10c - 1 1/4"
25c - 1 9/16"
50c - 1 13/16"
1.00 - 1 7/8"

I also have read the reviews about people getting from 1 1/2" to 2"+ on a dime but this is the results I'm getting on a newer unit. I emailed Garrett and was told I should be getting more than 1 1/4" on a dime and for me to send it in and it would be replaced. The new unit arrived a week later and still it will only get 1 1/4" on a dime.

While checking the depth on coins I again rechecked the dime and on the second depth test now I was getting 1 1/2" and the rest of the coins were also getting more depth. It finally dawned on me that the longer the unit is on the more depth it gets. I retested it. I turned it off and let it sit for a few minutes and within 10 seconds of turning it on I tested the dime again and the depth was as follows:

0 minutes - 1 1/4"
1 minute - 1 3/8"
2 minutes - 1 5/8"
3 minutes - 1 15/16"
4 minutes - 2 3/8"
5 minutes - 3" moments later the unit became unstable and started chirping and vibrating all my itself with no metal anywhere near it and had to be turned off.

I have repeated this several times with almost the same results and have had other people try this with their units and they also have have about the same results. Now normally you don't keep a PP on for this long and it was for test purposes only. This might also explain why some people says 1 1/2" and other say 2". Also it may be the older units were hotter than the current units. Now I'm not bashing the PP I just thought this was interesting myself and I don't know if all units will do this.

I've had seen all the reports and videos on the Pro Pointers and thought I would try one as it seems people are getting anywhere from 1 1/2" to 2"+ on a dime and even 1 1/2" on a dime edge wise. I've talked to 4 other people that have these units and one person bought one when they first came out and he gets 2" on a dime and another person that bought his about 6 months ago is getting 1 1/2" on a dime. Maybe the older units are hotter than the newer units as the unit I received would only get 1 1/4" on a dime and only 1/4" on a dime edge wise. I talked to Garrett about this and they told me I should be getting more than 1 1/4" on a dime and to send it in and they would replace it. One week later the new unit arrived and after checking it it still gets 1 1/4" on a dime and still 1/4" on a dime edge wise.

I have seen where you can detune these if you want less depth and while checking other forums for information about the Pro Pointer I came across a post where you can increase the depth. I'm sure this is old news to some but I haven't seen anything posted about this except on that one forum. So for those that are getting less depth try this. Take a rubber band(s) and put it on the back of the unit. Now take some sort of thin small metal piece ( I used a thin narrow brass piece off of a school ruler) and slide the metal piece under the rubber band(s). Pull the metal piece back to the rear so it will not detune the unit when it's first turned on. After the unit is on slide the metal piece forward until it starts to chirp, then slowly slide the metal piece back to the rear just to the point of where it stops chirping. I can now get 1 3/4" to 2"+ depending when the metal strip is located. I know this is a crude way for adjustment but it really works for those times that you might want or need more depth. I don't know if this will work on all units but it seems to work for the newer units. I have had 4 other people try this and theirs will do the same thing. Hope this helps.

These are fun to hunt, as you never know what will show up. Both of us just went to the probable areas, usually sloping areas, and hunted with zero discrimination, waiting to find areas where there is a constant rash of signals, usually typical of old dumps, as they are littered with old rusty cans. We found several areas, and worked the top 8" or so in an area about 10' x 10'. It turned out to be a very warm day, very unusual for this northern city. There was electronic speakers, radios, cd's all over the place, probably stolen. There were at least 6 sleeping bags spread out in layers over some bed mattresses. A lot of people prefer to live in the woods instead of the hostels, as they don't have to deal with having things stolen while they sleep. Every year they find a few frozen bodies when the temperatures reach -30's.

<div id="div_fc517521f963130885f5d1279df054f6"

And another adventure to remember some years down the road. :)
