I love my Deepstar, Goldquest SS in fact any of Eric Fosters detectors, I've even got an old Beachscan. Only had one retune between the whole lot in years. All expensive compared with the C-Scope that could be considered Eric's budget line but you do get what you pay for.

If you get a secondhand Whites Surfmaster you won't be much further forward than you are now but could select a black coil version thats lighter for beach use or weighted yellow for in the water. The Dual Field has a few inches more depth and is a little coil heavy and I can't identify iron as well as with Eric's machines with adjustable SAT or the smaller mono coil of the Surfmaster. That leaves Detector Pro's Headhunter P.I. Mid price but the U.K. dealer retired from selling detectors so you might have to import. I found the H.H. up with the Dual Field if fitted with the large coil but then you lose the fine gold chains that the smaller coil option will pick up. Unfortunately you can't switch coils as with Garrett water machines. There's still a question of reliability with the Headhunter design. Though improved they are perhaps the most fragile and if you had to return to the U.S. there's the cost and how long the return trip would take.

Having totally confused you (and myself) I would look for a Goldquest SS which seem as rare as hen's teeth or a secondhand Whites D.F. (£400-450) which isn't going to be very old as they haven't been sold in the U.K. for long. Blue headphones indicate the latest version. With the Beachscan the original had a hammered green shaft, newer flat black paint. Goldquest SS the box design changed. Newer should be better if not abused.

I haven't mentioned the Garrett Seahunter as I've only used the MK1. The Mk II is good quality, waterproof to 200 ? feet but if like the Mk 1 is a heavy, possibly three times the weight of what your using now. Cheaper than other U.S. P.I.'s. Last time I looked £525 which is way below the new AT Pro that though not pulse some claim to perform well on and in the salt. Hopefully someone will come in and comment on the Seahunter MkII.

They may not be as effective in American soil in the same way as American detectors may not be ideally suited to ours but mine works great in English soil.

As you obviously have experience with Pi machines, do you have anything else useful you could add to help me decide...?

I'm looking for a machine for the beach and Pi seems to be the way to go once you understand it - I'm happy with my other C.Scope and can't seem to find anything else from other manufacturers in the price range.

You lose the battery check meter of the 6pi but gain by the newer machine being lighter and having the option to hip mount the control box if you want. There's also the plus that C-Scope brought in the 4pi at a lower price than the older detector sold at which is almost unheard of.

Has a variable Pulse Width Control which give rough discrimination and helps tune out elec interference.
Control box is not waterproof. it is light weight and easy to swing all day.
capable of finding some rings and coins at good depth (better than 12 inches)in wet sand.
