Find's Treasure Forums - PI Technology Forum

At the request of Eric Foster we have renamed the long running Pulse Induction Classroom the PI Technology Forum since Eric wanted to combine his efforts elsewhere into one package. Eric is probably the foremost authority on PI metal detectors in the world. We hope you enjoy the forum and get the necessary technical information you need.

Which gives the best ID/tone/sound response to trash. I would like to know because I'm wondering if a particular machine permits better target discrimination by ear? Then with some experience one might dig less trash when detecting time is limited- such as when on a vacation. I have briefly tried a few PIs and as an example the 2 loud tones of the Infinium sort of masks any discrimination by ear and the DP PI I used seemed to give a good smooth response to bobbie pins and just loved them! Any thoughts? I'm looking for the best travel pulse machine for the Caribbean. Thanks CC.

Next generation detector. (3 replies)

The DPS5000 is a vaporware detector ( well some bits of it have solidified :ninja: ) It uses a sinc(x) = sin(x) / x pulse waveform which produces a wideband frequency pulse where each frequency component is of equal amplitude and coherant phase between nearly DC and some higher frequency dependant on what numbers are plugged into the DSP algorithm. ( eg 48 Khz on my test system )

There are some scope shots at geotech1.com at DPS5000

... below is a functional block of the DPS5000 ... one of the tricky bits I have been pondering is how to process up to thousands of data points in a single sample ( each data value is a complex variable ie Amplitude and Phase ) and each can be processed as an elementary metal detector. This equates to thousands of parallel descrimination points.
The question is how to produce one output signal that indicates a good target or not.

After some preliminary testing of code on the back end ( where the Phase and Amplitude is pumped out of the processing engine ) I believe I have found an answer .....

A neural network .... using the same principle as the meatware on your shoulders ... a neural network can not only process thousands of parallel data inputs at the same time but it can also adapt ( or learn ) .... This would mean that from the thousands of amplitude / phase inputs to the NN there would be say several outputs ranging from ( for example ) dig, dont dig, hotrock, ferrite, dont know, run away etc.

Additionally the user could 'train' the detection system to recognise new 'unknown' targets if they are worth digging ( like coins ) or avoiding (like landmines )

Historically neural networks have very high performance for pattern recognition and the ability to 'lift' a wanted pattern from high levels of interferance ( eg ground clutter ). Most NNs can achieve hit ratios above 90% in this type of application .. ( ie pattern recognition ).

White's TDI seems to have pretty good discrimination when using a DD coil (3 replies)

I got my White's TDI a couple of weeks ago and had started to get desperate and was even thinking of selling it because of its lack of usable discrimination (I don't think that I will ever get used to kind of discrimination it is supposed to have, as explained on this and some other sites - by switching to high conductor and offsetting the GB). Plus, here in Bulgaria most coins a low conductor coins and if I switch to high conductor only, I'll lose the ability to detect them, not to say that when you offset the GB, the depth decreases also. But yesterday I went out to hunt for coins with a buddy who has a ML GPX-4500 and he was laughing on me how useless the TDI discrimination was and said that I should have bought a GPX instead. I was using the standard 12" concentric coil. At some point we decided to try the GPX 11" DD Commander coil on the TDI, and what a difference - with the target conductivity switch set to ALL the detector produced wavy (changing pitch) sound on every ferrous target we tried it with - various iron coins, small and medium sized nails and some others. And the signals from the non-ferrous objects were clear and stable and the pitch was not changing on them. We didn't bury the test targets. Just put them on the ground and tried sweeping the the coil at different heights over them, so I believe it should be the same as if they were buried. I am going to get a DD coil for my TDI now.

Have anyone of you tried using a DD coil on the TDI and got the same result?

PI for relics... I know people use the TDI and the InfiniumLS but what about the Pirate? (5 replies)

I've been thinking about getting an InfiniumLS for hunting relics in bad ground and where they everything left is deeper than VLF will reach. I've been leaning toward the Infinium because of it's price being so much lower than the TDI, plus if I ever get to the beach I can use it there... but that really isn't a deciding issue.

I was looking at the Detector Pro website and I see that they advertise the Pirate and Pirate Pro as also a land machine and it has disc.

Does anyone have an opinion on using these detectors for relics like I mentioned above? Will it work as well as the Infinium or the TDI ?

Thanks in advance!

Julien
