1236x2 Settings. (3 replies)

Hey all, just got a new to me 1236x2 today and was testing it out. Air tests and just taking it for a spin in my yard. I have a few questions if you would be so kind to chime in. One, I wasn't that impressed with the air tests, is it noticeably deeper in dirt? Also, I set the Disc all the way counterclockwise which I assumed would knockout nails and small iron bits. With that setting I was digging nails non stop. Not big ones but average size rusty nails that rang out loud and clear. I turned the disc knob up and some of them were still sounding at 5. I guess what I'm asking is what good is the iron reject setting if it doesn't even reject nails? Also, what setting do you guys find perfect for coin hunting? The best and most stable for me so far was Sens 8 Disc 5 Volume 8. I strictly hunt for old coins and if I get jewelry, cool. Thanks for any thoughts. -Jay

I have looked through this forum but havent found a particularly large following of people who water hunt. Metal detectorists for the most part are a very small percentage of the population, however it looks like water hunters are even fewer yet.

Just ordered my scoop, and it and the new detector should be here before the weekend. Looking forward to learning this part of the hobby...and tips or suggestions to shorten the learning curve would be appreciated. Thanks

LittleJohn

This detector appears to be a very powerful machine. I went out today (first time hunt) and at times I felt as if I was driving and out of control Roman chariot!!!! Could this unit be used in coin/ring hunting in parks that are fairly trashy? Anyone have a disc system or park hunting technique that they could share? Help me out.............I could use lots of advice and tips on this one. And a big thanks to those who have cared enough to help me out!!! I know that Fisher 1270X users are in the minority, so responses will be minimal....thanks anyways.

Second time out with the C$ (10 replies)

This evening went across the street to the schoolyard to see if I could eek anything else out of it. This time with the Fisher Coinstrike. Found it is pretty is easy to use and wasn't to long before I started to find some coins.
Spend about 3 hours out there. Didn't expect to find too much in the way of coins, gone over the same areas 50 times. The school is convenient for me to test out detectors. Just about 30 feet away. More or less it was a short hunt to learn the way this detector operates.

I was pleasantly surprised to still find coins that were mostly between 3-5 inches deep. Did get some bottle caps and pulltabs down to about 6 or so. Some other junk a bit deeper. Not bad for using the 6" search coil.

Found pennies, dimes, nickel, quarters, Loonie ($1.00 coin) and a Mexican $1 coil that looks like a mini Twoonie (Canadian $2 coin). A broken watch, hot wheel car (was deep) and the usual trash.

The Coinstrike really likes Canadian claddage, with somewhat good ID numbers without bouncing too much and very repeatable coin sounding signals. Fairly easy to pinpoint in all metal mode.

Hopefully get out someplace different within the next few days, maybe find something good. Looks like I will enjoy using this detector and it gave me an excuse to sell my last Tesoro.

C$ Testing (3 replies)

Rain just won't go away.

Been reading the C$ reviews and noticed a bunch of people were claiming no depth. Not sure if it was all air test depth or actual in ground depth.
Have to say was not impressed with the air test nor on top of ground type air testing. My old Tesoro Amigo II picked up the coins gold at the same air test depth
as the C$ and sometimes beat it, especially with a faster recovery time........Trying all sorts of C$ settings really didn't help, neither did fresh batteries.
The worst part was the inability to pick up the Canadian half dimes more than 3", lot of them are found up here. I did ask jabbo to do an air test for me to see if
I could repeat it. Which I could. Still the C$ didn't see any good depth doing the on top of the ground testing. Read many folks are getting deep targets and wondering if my
C$ might be a dog. My PI not being set up for silver but configured for gold was getting better depth on the half dime and silver dime. So I sat back for a minute or two,
thinking, there's got to be more depth to be squeezed out of the C$. Remembering that some VLF, PI detectors air test poorly and do better in the ground.
It needs a matrix of some kind to go thru to get the depth. Then remembered Gunnar doing an air test-ground test using a stack of books as a matrix as it was winter time.
So I grabbed 3 old 3" thick books. Started retesting with the half dime etc. Amazingly found the half dime can now be picked up at about 6-7" with a quieter repeatable signal.
And able to pinpoint it in all metal mode. Silver dime was louder as well. Got the same results with all the other targets. Response and recovery time was also better.
At this point, it was clearly better than the one control, preset GB Amigo. Had me wondering there for a minute.....
Threshold was at -15, Sens 9, nothing notched, tracking off.

From this bit of experimentating, going to assume many folks sold their C$ on the premis of a bad, unimpressive air, above ground test.

Fisher Id Edge, Under-Rated (2 replies)

This has to be one of the most under-rated machines. I picked
a nice ID Edge up last year and love this machine. It ID's in
all metal which you can't beat that. Control Box is tiny but
powerful. I let a neighbor do his yard with it and his first target
was a silver 41' quarter. The guy was amazed as it was his
1rst time ever detecting. I can't believe Fisher did not sell more of these
and my guess would be because of the size of the new control box.
Like I said small but powerful with a very respectful depth. I love
this machine and it runs nice in the iron as you can hear it all with
the audio tones. The only downfall I see to this machine are the
touchpads as they stick or are very fussy to use but it works with patience.
Has notch control that works decent. I have found some nice stuff in a
short time with this unit... UNDER-RATED and not popular. WHY?
silverseeker 2

Today it reached around 45 degrees, overcast, called for rain by the afternoon.
By the time I could get away for some hunting it was 4pm. Wouldn't you know it, it started to sprinkle as I walked out the door. Drove away from the rain to spot I have been looking at
for sometime. Entrance way into a 1900 Mental Institution, with a lawn bowling facilty to the right. Got there it was raining very lightly. waited it out. Rain left, cold front and wind came thru.
Froze my butt for 3 hours. This place was loaded with bottle caps, they all ran in at around 18-19, after maybe bouncing if rusty. A great learning experience....................know where they come in,
at least the ones thrown about at that place. The lawn mower helped distribute them everywhere. Besides a few nails, rivets, screw, tin foil, managed to extract 2 dimes, nickel and 3 pennies.

Overall found the C$ easy to use, especially after owning learning to operate the ID Edge, F5 and Tek Omega. What I learned from using them made the C$ transition fairly easy. I did find it became a bit harder to swing around the 3 hour mark. Should have exercised this winter.......

Didn't expect to find much today as it was mainly to go out and learn the C$.
Had a blast with the Edge and 6" coil, it was a coin magnet. One came with the C$, will try that out next time....................

Can someone please explain Reverse Discrimination. (5 replies)

I have never read anywhere about how to actually discriminate backwards. But I keep reading about it, especially when I read older threads. Is it just a matter of having disc 1 set a little higher than disc 2? Or is there more to it. Also what is the real advantage to reverse discrimination?

Big fan of the small coinstrike coil (4 replies)

I have been using the small coinstrike coil(5.75") for about two weeks. In the normal trash infested places I have been hunting,I like it much more than the 8" coil. Round rusty washers/steel bottle caps, were much less of an issue. At one point I was scanning a surface rusty round washer, not hearing anything thought my machine was broke! I have been digging more shallow nickels with this coil, they seem to hit dead 9,10,11. pinpointing is a breeze.Target seperation is very good, and it's easier to swing. I am going to leave this coil on for normal coin hunting ,and use the 8" for beach/relic hunting. I know ground coverage/depth will suffer, but sanity is well worth the price. In the early 90's when I first started detecting I was approached by an oldtimer,He said he used to detect all over in Fairmount park Philadelphia. This was in the early/mid 70"s,before all of the restrictions of today. He used an old coinmaster. He asked if I would like to come by and see his collection. When I saw his collection,my jaw hit the floor. He had jars full of silver.Seated, barber, standing, walking, you name it.So many mercs/rosies/indian head pennies it was mind boggling. He then asked if I wanted to see the "good stuff". He had a cigar box with capped silver coins, half cents/large cents, King george coppers, spanish silver, and gold rings. I asked the normal next question..Any gold coins? He had found one $2.50 indian, but it was mangled. He did sell it whan gold skyrocketed in 1980. I asked him if he had any tips, and he preferred to use a 6" coil and let the other guys swing the big "dinner plates". aaah the good old days. Happy productive hunting to all.
