Along the Waterfront.... Mill St. (2 replies)

When your out and about in your own home towns, did you ever pay attention to the names of some of the streets?? Canal St., Ferry St., Mill St.....The street name is usually aptly named due to just what the name implies... there was a Mill or a Canal right there! There could be traces of the remains, or there may not be anything left.... Canals get filled in, Mills burn down, Ferry's are mostly extinct...I am speaking of the old type Ferry, that may have had a rope or cable to pull a barge across a river, with your Horse or cargo on it...not a motorized Ferry! In New England, there were Canals from Massachusetts, New York, Ct., New Jersey etc. Most went extinct, due to Railroads! Most are filled in, roads, or development took over...Mills were usually built on waterways, using the power of a river etc. The photo's here are showing the location of a Corn Mill, dating to the mid 1600's!
Mill St, evolved from a common path... Local residents would use it to visit the Mill, and get to the river. Most of the path disappeared in 1903, when the United Shoe Machine Company, built the largest concrete buildings in America . It still stands today, but is called the Cummings Center, a business park. The Tunnel or large pipe on the right, is where the Bass river, actually went up another mile or more, but would diverted, into a Pond, so the United Shoe Machine Corp, could use the water for power and their steam boilers.. the rest was piped under ground, and roads built over it. In the Forth photo, you see a wall, behind the traffic, there was a Dwelling located there, the granite stone for a front step, is still there in the tree line, along with an old foundation of a barn. I did detect in the wooded area, and found a couple of large cents, dating in the 1600's. In the Fifth photo, you are viewing just a tiny portion of the Cummings Center..
Here is the remains, pilings, and a Steel shaft, which may have been used for part of the Grist..A lone Swan, just happened to be there. The tide was coming in. The Corn Mill burnt down in the late 1890's.
Rj :usaflag:

Note: Sorry I may get long winded, But EVERY Photo tells a Story!

It was supposed to stop raining by early morning and be partly cloudy with a high of 56 degrees......HA! It rained all day, then it started snowing, most of the animals don't like getting wet, so they were in hiding, went into the bird house and butterfly house. The butterflies were all over the place they weren't cooperating much (mating season) they mate on the fly. The birds were somewhat calmer. We walked about 3 miles inside the grounds, there were no dry seats outside or under the pavilions, all the roofs leaked, no shuttle service (like we were told). Animal enclosures need to have more identifying signs all around the enclosure, not just one, a half mile around on the other side, grrrrrrr......... I have a couple pictures of my P.O.'d wife. I told her, at least I got some different pictures for my friends in far away places:bouncy: I have many more, so these are the first batch I have re-sized........nge

Along the Waterfront.... S.S. United States (13 replies)

Here is an old photo, circa mid 1950, showing the S.S. United States Liner cruising by the Nantucket Lightship. A Lightship was a stationary vessel, anchored at most likely a dangerous Shoal, similar to a Lighthouse, but unable to build a Lighthouse on that location. The Lightship was manned by a crew of 10 to 12 on average, and NOT allowed to leave position, regardless of Weather. Quite a few were struck and even sunk. As this photo demonstrates how close Vessels came into striking distance, and the difference in size. This Lightship is 149 ft in length.... The Ocean liner is a little longer...wouldn't you say??
This was a time, with no GPS. When Ocean liners left Europe, they would set their course to the Nantucket Lightship, off the Coast of the United States. Once the destination was seen, (Lightship), the Liner would continue to Boston, or head South to New York Harbor. So you see, The Nantucket Lightship was actually like a "Gateway" to the United States. Of course We only hear of the Statue Of Liberty, being the first thing passengers remember seeing of the U.S.
By the way, The S.S. United States held the Speed Record for ocean liners, crossing the Atlantic. The Vessel still exists by a non profit group hoping to keep it afloat as a museum and Hotel? The Nantucket Lightship LV 112, also is still around, also a floating Museum, berthed in East Boston.
Rj :usaflag:

During the War, Her Lanterns were removed, Red hull painted Grey, and Small Cannon installed.Model built by Captain Robertson Dinsmore.

The next is the "Boston Lightship", built in 1946. She was built in Michigan, to be Stationed at Diamond Shoals, North Carolina. She ended Her career as the "Boston". Later given to a non profit Group in New Jersey, who after many years could not afford to keep Her. She fell into ill repair, and was scuttled, off New Jersey as an artificial reef! Captain Dinsmore was 2nd in Command, aboard Her maiden voyage, and brought Her down the Mississippi River in 1946. He also built this model! This Lightship is special to me..I own the actual Ships Bell!

The Next is the Eagle 56, a Coast Guard Cutter, pre WWII, built by Captain Dinsmore. This Vessel was 100' in length, built to chase Rum Runners in New England during Prohibition.

Next is the 180' Buoy Tender "SAGEBRUSH" also built by Captain Dinsmore. This Vessel was also scuttled after many faithful years of Service, in 1988.

The last Vessel is a more modern Coast Guard Cutter, still in use today...
These are for you, Kelly (6 replies)

It was very windy at the lake today (gusts to 50mph.) and the ducks and geese were landbound. So I grabbed my camera and an apple from my truck and went and sat on a new bench. Needles to say, I was the most popular human there today, as the winged critters quickly migrated all around me. Some were so brazen as to get behind me on the bench and actually grab my T-Shirt, and try to eat it through one of the metal slats! Kelly, I hope I don't give you bad dreams about the geese:surrender: When I got near the end of my apple, I bit the core into 3 pieces, and offered it to the geese, being the gluttons they are, one of the younger ones came running, honking and hissing, chasing the others away and it grabbed a piece way too large to comfortably swallow. It kept juggling it around in its mouth, spit it out a few times, picking it back up and trying again, all the while running from others who wanted to steal it from him/her. I wanted to shoot a video of this, but it kept running all over the place. When it finally did get it down his throat you could see on the outside of its neck, the apple core piece slowly going down:yikes: I think one of the geese must know the mean one at your park and told me to send a message to you Kelly. It will be the first pic I put up. It got up to 76 degrees today, tomorrow it will only be in the mid 40's. March came in like a lion, and went out like a lion. Some of the geese got so close that I used macro on one...........nge

Along the Waterfront..... ALVIN...Woods Hole (4 replies)

Last Saturday, April 13, I had made plans to meet a very good friend, Captain Robertson Dinsmore, at his home in Falmouth, and attend the Woods Hole Historical Museums, 9Th Biennial, Model Boat Show. There are 7 exhibit locations around the Town, so you know, there is community participation, and is important to the Town folk. The visit had multiple purposes for me, first to visit the Captain, had not seen him since last year sometime. Two, Captain Dinsmore was presenting me with two of his personal Coast Guard Uniforms, which I collect. Three, Attend the Model Boat Show, with Captain D. and help him if needed, he had 8 different models of various Coast Guard Vessels. Most he had served on!
As it turned out, I became a Participant, with Volunteer Badge and all, for the Show. I have a pretty good knowledge of Coast Guard, CG vessels, and CG Lightships. But I sincerely confess, my knowledge of the subject matter, is the size of a BB rolling down a ten lane highway, compared to Captain D. ! He lived it, Coast Guard, WWII, Weather Patrol, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, and more.... An encyclopedia of knowledge...He is incredible.
During a break between visitors, Capt. D. brought me for a mini tour of the dock behind the WHOI building... This is the location for ALVIN....I had no idea.
Alvin , the deep-sea Submersible, which Bob Ballard found and dove to the TITANIC, amongst other important landmarks in deep sea oceanography. There at the dock, was the WHOI's research vessel, Atlantis. She is 274 ft in length, and one of the newest research vessels. Atlantis is Alvin's transportation and lifeline. I thought it pretty unique to be on that dock... Once I had a few photo's, we entered the rear of the building, which is no doubt an extremely large Shop. Then there it was.. a sign stating, Restricted to Alvin Personnel only... with a couple of peep holes cut in the doors it was mounted too. Of course We peeped through, but you could not distinguish too much... That is where, Alvin is being totally upgraded...I was able to photograph the original sphere, stored outback.. The New Sphere will be able to withstand a lot more pressure, and submerge deeper.
What the Public knows of Alvin, it is a deep sea submersible, with the characteristics of a small Submarine. What you do not see, is Alvin is actually a large Sphere, enclosed in a case or mechanism, enabling lights, camera's and other mechanical devices to be mounted for research and retrieving.. So the sphere you are viewing is the old Alvin, which is the actual personnel carrier. It has been in use since 1964, located a lost Hydrogen Bomb in 1966, and surveying the Titanic in 1986. The U.S. Navy owns Alvin, and the WHOI operates it. If interested search http://www.whoi.edu/main/alvin/upgrade Great Program for sure...
Rj :usaflag:
