The last two days where fantastic weather here in upstate NY. I was invited to hunt at a farm and also hit a nearby town Green with churches dated 1842 at one end. In the two days using the F70, I got 7 wheaties all at the farm along with the 1914 barber and the the 39 mercury. At the green under the same tree at which I found a barber last year got this barber, 1912. By the sidewalk near the church got the 1891 IH, and was going to skip the nickle as it was only 2 inches deep in some gravel. Dug it anyway and got my first V Nickel, (in very bad shape, 189?) I suppose thats a inventory tag of some sort. It was just a great few days-that I didnt want to end- I am going back next week, thats for sure!

5 goodies in one hole. (8 replies)

I was swinging along the edge of some concrete parking slabs this morning and right off, got a pretty hit. Although the vdi was somewhat bouncy and the signals were spread out a little, tones were good and some number readings were up to 83-84. I dug a little larger hole then usual and upon flipping over the clod I spotted the silver edge of a quarter. I plucked it out, a 57d, and went back over the clod and received another good sounding hit. This time I broke the clod apart and in the loose dirt was a bottle cap, 2 wheaties, a 40 Merc. and another silver quarter, a 61. It was a little chilly, 43 degrees, starting out this morning, but 3 silvers in one hole right off, made me forget about the chill. Unfortunately, except for 2 more wheaties and a little clad, that was it for my outing. HH jim tn

Special Announcement and request (21 replies)

Its been brought to my attention that Fisher will soon be unveiling a new and SIGNIFICANTLY improved brand specific web site. I had the opportunity to take a sneak peek and I think it is safe to say everyone will find it up to todays standards and then some by a long shot!!!

In anticipation of the new site, Fisher is asking folks to consider contributing in any one or all of the following ways if they like:

1.) TEST REPORTS.
I know I've seen quite a few folks have taken the time to share experiences around their initial usage of their recently purchased Fisher detectors. That is all great info! This is NOT limited to official field testers at all. The length of the reports are not that important but it needs to be somewhat concise. All submissions are appreciated and will be seriously considered for posting on the site.
2.) TESTIMONIALS
This is information more like an overall impression of a specific detector based on the individuals usage. These will usually be much shorter and contain less detail than #1 above.
3.) FINDS
Mike Scott made a post on this several weeks back. Finds of any type made with a Fisher detector are what theyre looking for. Info around the specific detector used, the general time frame finds were made, as well as any other pertinent details the person wants to include is requested and will be helpful. I haven't heard what the desired frame and file size is preferred. I'll find that out.
4.) VIDEOS
Again, we've all seen many good videos that have already been made and posted on the web. These will be fine as well as any new ones that folks want to make as long as they are Fisher specific.

Of course for this purpose, talking about or showing the product in a positive light is desirable. The site is not intended to be a place to work out issues or chat as there are already places to do that, like right here. Any submission needs to include expressed permission in order for it to be posted on the site. On the videos that are already posted on sites like YouTube etc, permission to use a link to them will be needed also. As for written submissions, if you aren't sure of or confident in your writing skills, I will be glad to look at what you have and make suggestions as to how it could be improved before you submit it. I'm no expert, but Ill be glad to share my opinion or what I know in order to help out if you like. For now, you need to send the written submissions to me and I will pass them on. There are no guarantees it will be used but Id say there is at the very least a real good chance it will. PM me for my email addy if you have something youd like to submit.

I can tell Fisher is excited about this new web site. I think they are like any other successful company in todays marketplace. From my previous interactions with them, I know they recognize that there is value in teamwork and that the recognition of the diverse skills and backgrounds of their customers are a critical part in their continued success. If you choose to do so, contributing to the information on the site will make you a more integral member of their team and I think it is a good opportunity for all involved. Some might want to consider submissions as somewhat of a potential resume'. Im not sure of the exact timetable here but it will be soon. Please feel free to PM me with questions if you like and if I have your answer, Ill be glad to share it.

The more the better! Here's a chance to be a part of it!

Three day relic hunt with my new F 75 LTD (7 replies)

HI, all:

The beans are out and I got to spend the last three days (16 hours worth) hunting a worked over camp/skirmish site before deer season starts on Saturday. My first serious relic hunt with my new F 75 LTD. The beans were cut off about four inches above the ground, so I had to run my coil a little higher off the ground. The BP mode really helped. It enhanced the signals. It will take some getting used to. All the signals sounded loud an big. I was running all metal with a sensitivity of 75. We've had a lot of rain, so the ground is pretty wet, which made it seem "hot". The Ferrous meter was running between .3 and 1 and when I ground balanced, the TDI was reading between 75 and 79. Hotter than normal for this part of the country. Normally, I get readings in the mid 50's when I ground balance. I had to ground balance often. It seemed the extra power with this new unit causes some TDI number distortion. The numberss seemed to bounce around more than my old F 75. Still, I was able to find quite a number of good targets, with depths down to ten inches. Remeber, I was running the coil four inches above the ground. Almost all the signals were solid and loud. With the "hot" ground, it ran a little jittery, but I was able to cope.

Most of the finds were shot bullets, with a few drops mixed in. The five large lead balls in the center are cannister from a James cannon. Below the cannister is a flat piece of lead that was part of the James cannister sabot. The tin "can" held the balls in place, and a thin layer of lead was applied over the tin for a sabot. The back side of this piece is thin tin. To the right of the sabot is a frag from a James shell, and below the sabot is a Borman fuse. I didn't realise what it was until I hit it with warm water and a toothbrucsh.

My first impression of the new LTD is positive. The increase in power is impressive, but it has to be tailored to your site, just like any other machine. I'm looking forward to many other relic hunts with this new unit. If you liked the old F 75, you will love this version.

Thanks for looking and keep on diggin'

jimmyk in MIssouri

MY F75 LTD REVIEW: Gold, Silver, Pierce Arrow, Orphan Annie, relics, oh yeah and coins too! :detecting: (10 replies)

I've had my F75 LTD for a week now, and have put over 30 hours on it hunting, testing and re-testing various settings, so I wanted to share my findings. This is my testing, for my style of hunting, in my Northern California mineralized dirt and intercity EMI.

Having put in a serious amount of time on my F70, it really shortened the learning curve of the F75 LTD. Although it's similar to the F70, it's still different enough, with many more options to suit just about any type of hunting style. I mainly tested the new boost mode, as myriads of field reports and internet forum reports of the F75 legacy detector exist, and they remain the same on the LTD. The new modes are boost (bP) and cache (CL).

A lot of folks, myself included, wondered if the new LTD is more of a relic hunter then a coin shooter. I can honestly say that in my humble opinion, it will excel at either. While 80% or better of my hunting is looking for old coins (mainly due to few places to relic hunt around here), I did get into some relic hunting environments and made some interesting finds, even in iron.

In boost mode it has plenty of horsepower in the depth department. I compared deep signals with an Explorer SE and I was easily able to hear 10" deep coins the Explorer could hear, and they were nice, distinct tones, nothing iffy, no whispers. As well as it hit on the deep coins the Explorer hit, there was definitely plenty more depth to be had, unfortunately there just wasn't deeper coins to be found at this site.

TID's are still jumpy at times, but what I'm finding is that coins are typically less jumpy and sound better, a lot of trash is typically jumpy and usually doesn't sound as good as a coin target (YMMV). The rings from pull tabs sound OK at times, but tend to be pretty jumpy. In my humble opinion the in boost mode the audio conveys much more information to help make that dig/no dig decision. Several targets had a washed out/quite'ish sound when checking in DE mode and I doubt that I'd dug them in DE mode. I like how the LTD allows you to hit the menu button to check your target in DE mode while in another mode, a well thought out touch.

At one hunt spot I worked an ultra trashy spot parallel to a sidewalk. I found the 11" DD to be surgical if I swung slooowly, it's separation was supurb. Crawl along in a trashy area and when you got a glimpse of a good hit, you could do the LTD wiggle over it to bring it up. I was able to pick out a silver rosie dime amongst a barrage of pull-tabs and other trash. I also recovered a beautiful sterling silver bracelet that weights over an ounce :clapping:

Iron was not a problem, I dug maybe two old nails, and they had very jumpy TID's, but I was curious to see what they were. I noticed that when you get a small bit of iron that jumps to a high coin tone (which was rare), when you try to pinpoint it, it's gone, not moved around like iron does on some machines, it simply doesn't respond with a tone or depth indication. I X'd a few targets and dug them to verify this behavior. Also with iron bounces, the audio tends to sound washed out. I don't know if this is by design, or a fluke, but I like it, it saves valuable digging time for finding more targets.

I did run into a couple of small EMI issues, but honestly I doubt any machine would've been EMI proof at these spots. That said, at San Francisco and Alameda intercity parks where EMI can be a real challenge with some machines, the LTD shined. I was able to run boost mode, disc 7, with a sensitivity of 75 and it was stable as could be. This has become my preferred setting. Disc settings of 5-20 are reduced depth settings, but with better and more stable operation. If one needs ultra depth, set the disc lower than 4 or higher than 20. A disc of 2 will give excellent iron separation with more depth, but of course it's going to be noisier. I could've run the sensitivity even higher and worked into the "noise" but you reach a point of diminishing returns (nothing was deep enough to warrant changes as at this site hotter settings would only cause instability and unneeded noise). I wouldn't call the EMI handling bulletproof, but it was far better then previous FT F-series machines I've used.

I'd really like to be able to disable or dim the backlight. Old Fishers like the CZ70 and Coinstrike could be enabled/disabled, why did Fisher take a step backwards here? I night hunted a place that was pitch black and the display was blinding, you felt like you were in the spot light the entire time, and could not see your surroundings very well. When night hunting at say a city park where there's ambient light, the display brightness is OK, but go into the woods or other remote area where there's no ambient light, and you'll feel like your being hit with an interrogation light. I've noticed that the display, mainly when night hunting, isn't pitched quite right and I'm always moving the machine around to see the display. It's fine during the day, but not so much at night and it would be great if we had some kind of angle adjustment.

The 6.5" elliptical concentric coil did not work well in boost mode. Not sure what the deal was, but the tones were scratchy and washed out, and the TID was off. I switched to the little 5" DD and it worked fine in boost mode. Actually the little 5" DD is killer in boost mode, you can easily get 6"-7" depth, which for a small coil that actually is a 4.75" coil, that's tremendous. I found a 6" deep Victorian era lead seal in heavy iron with the little 5" DD.

The LTD has a propensity to up average targets, which is better then machines that do the opposite and iffy good targets end up undug due to reporting as iron or foil. At one site (and oddly everything seemed to ring in higher then normal at this particular location) I got a nickel showing a TID of 60, clad quarters were coming in at 90. At a couple of different sites I did get pull tabs reading as high coins. Particularly square tabs (on a couple of occasions), and round tabs when the beaver tail was bent over into the center of the ring would ring in like a quarter or dime.

It's a shame that Fisher/FT can't afford to engineer a proper stand, the LTD still flops over like all my other FT Fishers :poke:

I tried the cache mode at several locations, and compared signals between boost and cache modes, and honestly I'm not seeing a great application yet for the cache hunting mode, but then again it wasn't designed for coin shooting, unless it's a cache of coins! The audio was much better in boost mode then cache, BUT I was able to raise the coil higher with cache mode then boost on a given target.

Is the LTD the best thing since sliced bread? Honestly I can't say yet. I haven't made that pinnacle find like a 12" deep barber dime, a seated half dime in thick iron, or similarly challenging find that would make me go "WOW!!". Finds wise it did not make every site I took it to seem "virgin" again, but I did make some nice finds in hard hunted sites and I'm sure it will open up future sites. It also had no problem keeping up with the Explorer. It's a marked improvement over previous F-series machines, with far better audio, better stability, the ability to handle EMI far better, and it has plenty of depth horsepower on tap. I have no doubt that in the right area it will hit a silver dime at 12"+, but I'm still looking for it.

OK, on to the finds :detecting:

Relics (anyone know the date of the three ringers and army button?):

<div id="div_18d9557a0d157b4896ed041396fa110d"

Just wanted to say sorry to everyone for my recent venting. I am prone to "losing it" every now and then and do have a cracking point because I am very passionate about what I do, proud of the company I work for and defensive about the people I work with.

I take my "work" home with me every night because metal detecting is also my hobby and passion and has been since before I started working in the industry almost 20 years ago. I live and breathe detecting 24/7 and think it is safe to say I am more deeply involved in the hobby than anyone in the world. I detect every chance I get, my vacations are planned around detecting trips and I even try and get out for an hour on my lunch break when I can. Those that know me know how often I hunt, the stuff I find and how important it is to me. I watch the history channel and the books I read are always about history or artifacts.

I am just like most on this forum and love detecting and playing on and reading the forums. Sometimes its difficult for me to make the distinction between the personal fun hobby part and the professional business aspect and they can get muddled together. I am sure these 2 things will intertwine again and I may make posts viewed by some as unprofessional. I am always willing to take my lumps from others if they don't like the way I conduct myself but I am what I am and despite my position I will always be myself.

Mike

WOW, I none the less am going to post about hunting. I hit one of my favorite spots this morning and ended up digging an even dozen wheats, a silver ring with a dove and turquoise stone mount, a 35 Buffalo and a bit of clad. It has been quite a while since I have dug that many wheats in one outing. I was going to stay a bit longer and get my silver coin, but had a errand to run. 10 to 12 wheats to 1 silver coin is about my ratio...and no, I don't count the silver ring in my ratio. If the detecting gods are smiling, my first coin tomorrow will a be silver.:bouncy: HH jim tn
