I have several old pieces that came out of really poor soil and can tell they are delicate and will not stand the normal scraping and cleaning some items can take. I also have some iron gun pieces and bayonet pieces I would like to preserve. Right now they are pretty much like they came out of the ground in my case and they are flaking off small pieces of medal just sitting in the wooded case they are in. What is the best thing to do with this stuff once you find it?

Completely inexperienced in metal detecting . It came with instructions, I contacted nautilus directly. I have two front switches not shown near the batteries up front its an older model! I honestly can not recall the gentleman's name but strong southern accent well compared to NJ. The instruction booklet is vague my screen name should describe my learning curve . If any one still plays with vintage toys can you please give me a quick hand.

Last question can i change the handle too. I want the long elbow support one not the curvy one! I prefer older items new & shiny is not my thing my generator is from 49 And has a flat head lol

My 11B does not like the cold but would usually be my detector of choice. I was running a little on the positive side, having it catch the increase in volume on the up side while ground balancing. I increased the discrimination to 18 rather than my usual 12. This silver plated flat button sounded out loud and clear, it was only about 3-4 inches down. I was finding a lot of old .32 and new .22 rim-fire shells and bullets so I knew I was set up to find good copper/silver and other high conductive targets. I also found a suspender clip but the flat button was by far the gem of the day.

It pains me greatly to finally sell my Naughty but the wife says it
is time to thin the herd. For anyone who knows DMCIIBs, the early models were the hot ones'. This machine dug me a ton of relics. Both coils were re-balanced back at
Nautilus at least once over the years. The 15" coil is one of the old thick one's which have stood the test of time and are not temperamental as the newer 15" coils. Also the tone is mellow instead of pearsing and shrill.
A correct set of head phones that are good to better quality really, really , really makes a difference.

Ken

Nautilus Metal Detectors Inc. (14 replies)

I went by there today . They are open and working on customers detectors that have been sent in.

I dropped of an old green 5 nob LF model built in '79 for adjustment / repair. The units verniers are off and wand them adjusted correctly. Owner did a quick look at it and stated that they still work on the old LF units with one caveat, they do not build any new coils for the LF units.
Just for those of you out there that have not used the LF unit , I have located and traced a 3/4" pipe in my yard this past November that is 2' in the ground. When I dug it the flags were dead on top of the pipe. This pipe was installed in 1954.

I also had him look at a used IIB that I have acquired and check for correct operation. It's working fine except need to have the on off switch replaced since it has a volume control attached to it . He said use it until they figure out what is wrong with the LF unit.
He said come back in 4 weeks as they are slammed with tune ups and off the wall repairs.

They are building new units but I did not ask what the leed time was for a new unit.
I will ask when I go back.

We talked about coils , repairs, Pulse detectors and gold.

He said that the IIB would handle all but the heaviest mineralized soil and could be used for hunting gold nuggets . Smaller gold you would need a smaller coil to get the most out of the machine.
I asked him if he had messed with any of the Pulse machines and he stated that the biggest problem with pulse had to do with ground rejection and the costs just do not warrant the prototyping at this time as the market has been pretty much captured and saturated out there.

As for coils , it looks like they are playing with some spider coils, do not know as yet if he will go full production for the public, He has placed some out there for use and testing. He further stated that the relic hunters that have tested them want a bottom cover, it seems as though the relic hunters prefer the solid coils because the solid coils do not catch on the stubble and such in the open areas of the spider.

I was able to view the thin standard coils in production and under repair. The coils are placed and are epoxied in form and filled with foam with a small PC board embedded in the coil then plastic is formed over the coil.
The old thick coils are made of MDF board with routing for the coils , then epoxy and then plastic is installed over the whole thing. Stronger but heaver than the thin coils. I do not know if they still make the thicker coils.
I will check the next time I go back.
Some of the repairs on coils he can separate the plastic covers, on others they cannot and have to cut open from the top and then repair with epoxy. I did not get any information as to what causes the coils to give trouble but I suspect that rough treatment is the culprit.

Oh by the way he stated that the coils are waterproof provided the covers are not cracked from old age and hitting hard objects.

I was able to get some ideas from him on repairing cracked coil covers and will try this weekend. I will take before and after pictures and post results.

He seems to be in much better health and has hired another person to help his existing staff with new units and repairs.

One day out with a friend we were in a farm field and I was having more troubles..My buddy had me check out something under is Garrett's search head. I just couldn't get a reading out of the ground. It was a bullet and just decided that my machine is broken and my days will be few if I don't do something about it. 10 years later I bought a F75 and missing out was over. Finally I decided to get the Nautilus fixed. I sent it to NC for repairs and they sent it back fixed and ready to go. It was the search coil. Well between shipping and repairs it was 125.00. I don't use it much (or never) but if I ever hunt the power lines or houses it should come in handy because EMI doesn't effect it or at least I think it doesn't.Good Hunting.
