shell casing slightly larger than .22 cal?

I have dug alot of shell casings but this one caught my eye as I was about to toss it out. There was another .22 cal shell casing next to it and it was obvious that they were different sizes. Has anyone seen a bullet so close to this popular cal and yet slightly larger than a .22? I inserted the .22 shell casing inside the larger one to show the difference in size better. It has no apparent head stamp.

After all these years of both casings coexisting together I would think more people would have reason to stress the importance of NOT using a .22 LR in a .25 Stevens rifle......by mistake of course. :yikes:

The photo I posted with a penny in the pic shows a .25 Stevens Long which is the closest one to the penny, if only you imagine that as a Short and next to the .22 Long Rifle(the longer silver colored casing) it would match the sizes in the original pic I posted.

The difference would be the length of the bullet and amount of powder behind it. The casing would definately not be a .22 calibre but to me looks too small for the .32. I think you nailed it as a type of .25 calibre.

The empty you found is a 22 special. Another rimfire like the 22 long rifle you have found, only a lot larger.

Does a 22 special have a larger cal bullet than a .22 long rifle? This casing is larger than .22 but only slightly, and I doubt that size difference would make it a .25 cal. There seems to be high votes on .25 cal so far though, so now its a debate. I love a good debate! lol....so far I'm leaning towards '22 special' only because it seems SO close to .22 Cal.

And yes, this is a rimfire casing. I found a larger rimfire, presumbly pistol, casing in the same area and it was probably between .25 to .30 Cal. Those are more common to find but I only posted this one because I havn't seen anything like it before.
