I then took my machine into the field to test it with targets on a previously un-hunted site. The Dx1 could hit wheat pennies and clad dimes at no better than 2 inches. The ground here where I hunt does not have a lot of mineralization (I would call it low to moderate) so I am doubtful that ground balancing the probe before each use would offer any better performance.

Is the depth performance that I am seeing normal or expected? or does my unit need checking at the factory? I just received it and have not even filled out the warranty card.
