This detector is so different that changing the coil changes the frequency it operates at. 3kHz, 7.5kHz or 18.75kHz......... You make the decision, based on your hunting needs. Come to the X-TERRA forum to interact with those who have found the X-TERRA to be one of the best metal detectors available, bar none.

Tough hunt tonight....need to vent a little. (2 replies)

I haven't been on this forum for a long time. Truth is...I got a little burned out on detecting, and I haven't been out in awhile. ...until tonight. Probably not the best way to get back into it.

About a year ago, there was a car wreck(roll over) and two young men died.(yes, alcohol was involved.) Anyway, the family of the driver wasn't able to find all of his tools and a pistol. I was asked, by other people in town, if I would give it a shot with my detector. So, tonight was the night.

Didn't take me long to find the main location and the edges of the debris field. The driver worked in construction and was an avid hunter/fisherman. So LOTS of ammo, LOTS of nails and misc stuff, some tools, and even some fish hooks. Even after all this time, the X-Terra and I are one. The tough part was....that although I wasn't really good friends with the driver, I did know him. I started off ok, but after a couple of hours....I just had to quit. I'll go back in a couple of days and try again....

Anyway, needed to vent a little..... I knew you guys would understand. I'll start detecting again this summer and hopefully post something more upbeat later on.

Rick

False/whisper signals (6 replies)

Today I found what use to be a 1 room schoolhouse but now is a manicured lawn & received permission to detect on it & so I did & came up empty. But I did get plenty of signals or high tones sometimes followed by low tones. What I mean is that as I sweep I would get a TID of 40 or 44 or 38 etc.,but, just for a split second......then as I would sweep back over the same spot-nothing,dead silence or sometimes I would receive a low tone as in a TID of -6 or -8. I would look at the depth gauge & almost in every case it would show 5 arrows or as being a deep target. My coil of choice was the 3kHz 9" concentric with a GB of around 25-40. The ground was very much trash free so I had my sensitivity set at 24-27. I ran in all metal.
#1 what are these split second signals? false signals?
#2 why, when I re sweep over this high tone, would it no longer be there?
I believe I have the X705 set up correctly so are these false or whisper signals? What is a whisper signal anyway? Just a little confused & still learning but having fun doing it. Thanks for any help.

If I were to run both sets of batteries it would be close to 50hrs of run time. I am remote mounting the batteries to actually distribute the weight of the coil and balance it more. I would eliminate the internal batteries and mount them in the rod somewhere behind the handle. Like a mag light flashlight setup where the batteries slide in the shaft and a water tight cap. Factory speaker is already eliminated.

I got to the side of the yard and pulled up a nice musket ball. The house is only half a block from a park where I have found some mini and musket balls.
My 1st. homestead site (17 replies)

Here in S.E. Wisc. I got permission to md a pre 1880 homestead site that now is just a plowed field located on high knoll. The house that was there was moved to it's current site sometime around 1880 & is about 800 yards away & is occupied by the owners who gave me permission to hunt. I went there today & they pointed out the general location of where the house use to be,so I grabbed my X705/3kHz 9'' concentric & my 7kHz 10.5" DD & headed for the plowed field looking for any signs & low & behold found pottery & glass shards. The only problem is that I didn't come well prepared because all I had for digging with me was my Lesche digger but I did find 3 square nails & a pipe stem from a settlers pipe. I am invited to come back again but I want to be well prepared. My questions are:
#1 What type of shovel should I buy for plowed & hay fields? O.K. dumb question but what do others use?
#2 The soil GB in the mid 20's so I'm going to use my 7.5 kHz 10.5'' DD. Correct? I have both of the 9" concentric coils.
#3 Depth. In plowed fields am I expecting coins to be as deep as 10" plus? maybe deeper?
I'm able to crank up the sensitivity to 25-27 without chatter & I'm using positive tracking GB offset of +3 thinking I'll get better TID accuracy-still feeling this feature out. I also know that this area produces Indian artifacts so copper spear points may also be found(now that would really make my day). This is my 1st. time detecting on an old homestead so any other thoughts would be nice to hear. Thanks.....

We have taken at least a dozen mercs,a few rosies and 1 standing liberty quarter.I had a few hours Sunday morning so i went there with a plan of hunting super slow and watching the tid. There is hot rocks and alot of nails in the end of the park where the silver came from. I ended up with 7 wheaties and a buffalo. The signals were very mixed with the good numbers only repeating very little. If i saw a repeating signal at all mixed with the grunts from the iron and junk i dug it. These were far from good signals. All the wheaties were in the holes with nails or some other junk. The buffalo still has me baffled. I didnt get a nickel tid with the buffalo. There was a couple hot rocks and a nail in this hole. The buffalo was in the side of the hole. I hunted with the 10 in dd in 18khz. I manually ground balanced and backed it down 5. My guess is there is alot more here to be found. My hunting partner is using a ctx he just got over the winter. He is still in the learning stage .Once he learns it he should clean this place out. If your using the 705 hunt slow. I passed these signals up im sure in the 6 times we were there. I will be going back with a different frame of mind and hunting super slow.

Strange behavior of 505 (4 replies)

Today I had a behavior I have never had before with Xt 505. Last weeks' hunt was amazing finding coins 12'' deep but today could n't discriminate a copper coin from iron in 2'' air testing. I 've been for hunt today and half an hour later could not find anything, I was quite curious about because I could hear coin like tones but was breaking the tones so I did n't dig them. I did an air test to check that with a copper coin and my detector could n't see it at 2'' inches from the ground with a coins tone but could see it like a nail. I had sensitivity 18, threshold 10, sound 99, volume 28. The coils wire on the control box was just a bit loose. Tightening the wire did n't change anything. After that I left the hunt and when I came home I took off the coils cover and there was some dirt soil in it. When I cleaned it I made another air test and looks to be better, it can see the coin now. Did anybody have the same experience or is it something I should worry about? Thanks for help in advance.

Another Good Day With The Coiltek Digger Coil (16 replies)

Got out a little earlier today with the Digger coil. It had just rained and I wasn't sure if I could use this coil in the wet grass like I do with the Minelab coils so I wrapped it in two plastic bags and put a Velcro band around the bags. At the first location it seemed like I was getting moisture in the bags so I took them off and put the coil back in the truck. Didn't find anything at that site with the 10.5" MF coil. We quickly moved on to another spot where I had found a 43 quarter and some wheats a few years back. I rewrapped the Digger in two new bags. In about 10 minutes I had a pretty nice signal and was expecting to dig up an older penny or a dime and out popped this nice 925 bracelet. This looks like it was gold plated at one time but the clasp reads 925 and the slight tarnishing on the back looks just like silver when it tarnishes so I have to believe that the whole bracelet is 925.

The funny thing is that I really only used the Digger coil for 15 minutes today and I'm happy with the results. Once I got the bracelet it looked like these bags had moisture in them so again so I put it back in the truck and put the 10.5" MF coil back on. At this site I found 3 wheats within three feet of each other and a short distance away I found a penny from the 70's with the MF coil. I was surprised to see that one of the wheats was a 1917. The next time I'm out near that location I want to use the Digger in the area where I found those wheats. It was kind of trashy right there and I was surprised that I got enough separation with the 10.5" coil to find the wheats. I'm hoping that there are some other coins hiding in this area that the Digger will expose.

I've emailed Coiltek asking if it's ok to use that coil in wet grass. My guess is that it will be but I want to make sure before I do that. It almost looks like they use a fabric tape between the skid plate and the upper part of the coil so that's what makes me question just how water resistant that coil is.

Misinformed Article (6 replies)

I was doing some Google searching this morning and ran across this article. It just goes to show you how misinformed people are about detecting. In some ways you would like to tell the person that wrote the article, "you have this all wrong, your example is coming from not having the right equipment, being uneducated in what you were hoping to accomplish and expecting way too much with the little knowledge that you possess."

It's obvious that most of society expects to wake up and find a loaf of bread and a gallon of milk on their front porch every morning without having to go out and work for it. I've talked to a lot of people that are really interested in the things that me and my family have found detecting but think they would never be able to find the things that we find. Deep down it's probably more that they don't want to invest in the right equipment or spend the time trying to find things. I was talking with a guy that I work with and I said, "people that don't detect think that detectorists are like gamblers and you only hear us tell you when we find something good but most people that detect will tell you that we've dug an awful lot of trash in the meantime."

The other side of this is also stems from something that happened to us a few weeks ago which intentionally gives bystanders a false impression of detecting. Our Mom, Hotrod53 & I were in a public park that we knew was formerly an old town. We were having a great day. We all had something good in our pocket. Actually, Mom and Hotrod53 had something great in their pockets. Mom had found an 1865 2 cent piece and an Indian, Hotrod53 had a 1889 Morgan dollar and I had a merc and an Indian. We could tell that a guy and his two daughters were going to approach us and Hotrod53 said "should I show them what we found". I said "nope". When they came over the guy asked if we were finding anything and Hotrod53 told them that we had found a few coins and the typical junk that you find in a park. Now the last thing that I felt we wanted to do was give someone a tip on some of the best finds of the year in a place that we really hadn't spent much time at up till that point. You never know who that guy knew that may have a detector. In a way you kind of feel bad in that instance that maybe we didn't give the guy all of the facts which might turn him away from getting into the hobby if he and his family were interested.

Most of the time when people come up and ask if I've ever found anything good with my detector I always say that over the years I've found some interesting old coins from the 1800's and some gold and silver rings. If they ask me about the present day and location even if I have something really good in my pocket I say "a little bit of change and a little bit of junk". On many occasions that little bit of change my constitute some nice old silver coins or 1800's copper which are always in a different location than the clad that I've found. If someone wants to see what I've found I show them the clad.

I think that many of you will agree that this article is very misinformed and written by someone that was expecting good finds to jump out of the ground and into their pocket and all they were going to have to do was walk along with a detector. I don't think it will stop anyone that has the drive like most of us do to get into detecting. You would like the take someone like this out to the right location and have them spend a day with you, but then again, would you? Ha ha ha

Article

Found a little more than $4 in clad, 1 wheat, and a nice 925 Heart Pendant. Seemed to have the best coin-to-trash ratio in the Volleyball court areas. Dug a ton of bottle caps everywhere else with my xterra 70... IDs a solid 42 which is definitely a dig ID/Tone; if they were quarters I'd be a wealthy man!

I read all of the past posts on here the past couple of days regarding the older steel bottle caps and I guess when using the DD MF coil, or any DD coil for that matter, I'm going to be a champion bottle cap digger like everyone else with a Xterra 70! Locked on at 42 with a solid high tone when the caps were within a couple inches of the surface. The deeper more rusted ones were a 40-42 and I quit digging targets if a 40 showed up.

My 1980 Garrett analog system will discriminate them while still picking up coins and silver but not the xterra in my hands. With my machine, in my soil, GB 15 -18, Sens 15 -20, Disc with -8/48 rejected & 99 tones, seems like if the taget is round and the size of a coin the machine sounds off like it is a coin and regardless of all the tips I've read, some of the dimes and cents vary more than 2 TIDs, ie 32-38 on a given target.

Still working hard at letting the 70 tell me what's in the dirt and doing my share of taking out the trash!

There were two areas about 15'x30' where I found about 8 silvers a few years back. I've gone over that area with both 10.5" coils and my two 6" Minelab coils. I've literally spent 6 or 7 hours at this site. I went back once last year and I think I only found a wheat.

Tonight I went back and the grass was a little high but I made a bee line for the 1st area which is closest to the woods. After about 40 minutes of digging a few targets I came across a kind of sketchy 38-40. I dug about 6" down and turned over a 1937 Merc! This merc is verging on one of the oldest coins that I found in this park.

About 20 minutes later I had a similar iffy signal but strong enough for me to dig and I was surprised to pull up a nickel. After another 45 minutes I hadn't found anything else but those two coins so I packed things up and went back to the truck. I looked at the nickel with my magnifier and it ended up being a 1943 war nickel! I'm kind of amazed that the only two coins that I found were silver. Once they cut the grass I'll give it another shot and hopefully find some more coins.

Still not ready to give a full review on the coil yet but the first day I got a V nickel, yesterday a couple of wheats and some older clad and today a merc and a 40% silver war nickel. So far, I can't complain.

This place is not used anymore and up for sale but they keep the land in immaculate condition. At one point I got over near their shed that I thought they kept their tractor in. All of the sudden I heard some loud crashing around and it almost sounded like person was in this shed. I could see that it was locked from the outside so I suspected that maybe an animal had gotten in their the last time they had the mower out and it just didn't get out. A short time later I heard these same noises and whatever was in there sounded big. I called the guy that gave us permission to hunt the property and told him that I thought something got trapped in their shed and it sounded rather large. He was concerned that it might be a bear. He said he would come over in an hour or so to let whatever was in there out.

I walked back over with my iPhone running, not sure what I was going to see but I knew it probably couldn't get out and run towards me because from time to time it was giving it's all to get out. I was surprised to see a button buck inside! It looked kind of emaciated but I would suspect that he will be ok. The shed was built into the hillside and the tin roof was in poor condition and it had fallen through the roof. There were some minor cuts from trying to get back out and getting scraped up on the roof. It couldn't get enough traction on something to make it's way out.

Had I not gone over to try out the new coil, who knows how much longer it would have been alive. It turned out that they don't keep anything in this shed and whomever comes to cut the grass may not have heard it rustling around in there. Yesterday a snake, today a deer, but I ended up finding more coins in an area that just hadn't been giving up coins very easily.

The guy that gave us permission to detect called me a little while ago and said that he got the door open and he took off on his way. Hopefully they will do something about that roof.

First Day With The Coiltek 6" Digger Coil (7 replies)

Boy where do I start.

My mail typically comes between 10:30 & 11:30 on Saturday's. As I anxiously awaited my new coil to arrive, finally at 12:25 I could see the mail girl coming up the street. She usually drops of letters and then gets back in her little truck and drives to any houses that have packages. I watched her get back in her truck and all of the sudden she did a u-turn and headed off in the other direction!! The USPS site showed "Out For Delivery" so I knew it had to be on her truck but she was done delivering in our part of the neighborhood. I ran down to my truck and drove after her. I caught up with her down the road stopped ironically at the driveway of the empty old 1800's house that we have been detecting at and one of the places that I really wanted to try the Digger coil on. I walked up to her truck and politely asked if she had a Priority Mail package for me. Her face kind of went blank as she looked beside her and said "I'm sorry!!! I forgot all about putting this on the truck this morning". I laughed and said no problem and we were off to an old home site about 10 miles away that my brother (Hotrod53) hunted a few nights ago.

He had hunted this place about 8 years ago and found a flying eagle cent some indians and sliver. The other night he found two more indians and six wheats. He's been doing really well lately so we weren't sure what the chances of us finding anything would be although he feels that the place still has potential. It's pretty rough there right now with a lot of brush around but there are some semi open areas. About 45 minutes after we got there I had my first coin with the Digger coil, a 1965 dime, of course missing silver by a year which happens to me all of the time. I also found a big flat button. My Mom had a 1940 something wheat at that point also. I went off into the woods to an area where my Mom said there used to be a chicken coup. There was a lot of slate back there and some old broken crocks. I wasn't getting many hits and all of the sudden I noticed about a 4' to my left was a big 6' black snake moving his head around quickly with his tongue going in an out like he was ready to strike. I know they can bite and they are not venomous but I let out a quick whoa!! and bolted off in the opposite direction and almost ran right into a tree. I got back out to where my Mom was and I know she's terrified of snakes so I told her what I just seen and she said "I'm ready to go!" Seems like right at the beginning or our prime detecting season I always run into a snake or two. Last year it was two within an hour in a wooded area of a local park.

We came back to the old 1800's house that we've been saying we've nearly hunted out. This is the same place that I met up with the mail girl to intercept my new coil a little earlier. I texted my brother and said "I'm headed to the proving ground for the 6" Digger coil." I really wanted to see what this coil would find being that we've used 5 different coils at this site and coins are really few and far between. Two weeks ago were the last notable finds for me at this place. A 1910 Barber and an 1874 Indian and they were the only two coins that I found that day. We were there for about an hour and a half today and I found a 1934 wheat and my Mom found 3 coins prior to 68 but none were wheats. After taking a break for dinner I went back by myself and within 10 minutes had a 1942 wheat. About an hour later I had a 40-42 that was a fairly strong signal. I dug down about 5 inches and has was pulling dirt out with my hand and going across it with my Pro Pointer and out fell a nickel. I thought it was really strange that this coil ID'd the nickel as a 40-42 and from what I've read about that coil, it doesn't do as well with nickels as it does with copper and silver. The nickel seemed smooth and I couldn't feel Monticello on it or see Jefferson face when I rubbed it. I kept detecting but I really wanted to see the coin because I thought it may be the first buffalo from this site. Finally I stopped and started to rub it with my gloves and as I started to get more of the dirt off I wasn't recognizing any part of this nickel. All of the sudden I could see some of the detail and for a second thought it might be a token. Then it looks kind of like a Barber and I started thinking this might be a V nickel which I have never found before. When I flipped it over I rubbed it one time and I could see the V perfectly. It turned out o be a 1900 V nickel....my very first!!!!

Now I have no idea why that ID'd the way it did because after I got the dirt off of it I swiped it over the coil and it was bouncing between 10 & 12 but it was mainly a12 like I would have expected it to be. I swiped the hole again and there was no signal. I'm not sure if it was the orientation in the hole but a V nickel was that last thing that I was expecting while digging. I'm sure I've been over that same area with other coils and my Mom and Hotrod53 have also been through there. It's hard to say if it was the Digger coil or just luck that I went over that area in the right direction to pick it up but at any rate, I was happy to find my first V nickel!

I think it's a little too soon for me to share my thoughts on the coil but I will say that it really sounds off strongly when you find something. I had some nice solid signals with valid coin ID's that sounded coin size but I dug a rusted piece of metal that looked like an old bolt. That happened about 4 or 5 times today. Not sure what to think about that yet. Once I use this for a little while I'll post my thoughts but I want to get better acquainted with it before I do that. It found 4 coins on a site that have been missed by countless hours of detecting so I'm happy about that.

Any X Terra 505 users? (7 replies)

Hi Everybody!
Trying to decide between an X-Terrra 505 or Fisher F5. I've been researching the F5 quite a bit, but I was hoping to get some input from X-Terra 505 users and see how they like the machine. The 505 seems like the red-headed stepchild of the X-terras, I can't seem to find many of reviews on them. The 705 is a bit above my budget , but the 505 looks nice and the price is right. Any thoughts on the 505 would be great. Thanks so much, Scott
