Way too cool to believe. Must read! Part I (6 replies)

Well, I'm out on the beach this weekend, minding my own business, picking up a couple of bucks in clad coins and a woman approaches me and starts a conversation about her father -- a former detector. Come to find out, he has passed on and she is wondering if I know someone who would like his old detectors. I told her, although I was fairly new to the hobby, I was thoroughly addicted and I could find good homes for the detectors. I asked her if I could pay her something for her trouble, and she replied she didn't want any money, she just wanted to get the old things out of her house. She said she wasn't sure if they were toys, or legitimate detectors. I set up a time to meet her the following day a couple of blocks from my condo to take a look. To my shock, she drags three dusty detectors out of her trunk and immediately recognize one as an old green Garrett. I take a look and I don't recognize the exact model, but it is an early one (see pics). The next out of the trunk is another classic; a Tesoro LOBO Super Traq in pretty decent shape. The third detector is a Fisher M-Scope Gold Bug -- complete with a pair of White's headphones. She starts telling me how her father had actually used at least one of these for gold prospecting. Seeing the fairly good condition, I again offer this kind soul some cash for the machines. She won't hear of it and thanks me (!) for taking them off her hands. From the pics, you can see the machines are in pretty good condition, but I still don't know if they work. I get them home and check the battery compartments, and to my surprise, all the batteries in the Fisher and Tesoro are dead, but in like new condition. Unfortunately, the Garrett seems to be missing a slide-in battery holder that slides into the machine.

Anyway, long day at work today, so I haven't had a chance to buy new batteries for these babies, but I can't wait to try them out. Here's a question: I've not seen another Garrett like this one anywhere -- can someone please ID this model? Also, if anyone has any tips for using these machines, all advice is welcome! I'm truly beside myself with this act of generosity and I plan to pay it forward. See Part II for pics of the Fisher...

Mike

Original BH Sharpshooter (no replies)

 Hi, Just thought I would share something with anyone who owns a Bounty Hunter metal detector. I used to own a BH Sharpshooter II ( the round face box,...muffler on a stick look). It was a good unit but I could never get the notch and auto notch features to work right. I recently obtained the original first run production Sharpshooter. This is the one with the flat control box ( like Bud Lite Series). These came out in the 1990's. I have been testing this unit and I find that the notch and auto notch WORK RIGHT. Actually I wasn't too surprised because many BH users have said that the older flat body models worked a lot better than the newer oval shaped units. It seems to me that the world of detectors in general was very good in the 90's. Anyway, I am really liking this unit and can't wait to get it out in the field.
PNI varmit (1 reply)

Hi All,

Well, I purchased an old BFO/TR recently. This is a PNI Varmit from the 70's era that didn't initially work. Fortunately, the problem was nothing more than a dirty switch and with a shot of WD 40, it was up and running.

BTW, if anyone has a schematic of this detector, I would appreciate a copy of it if that is possible.

What surprised me was the fact, this detector appears to work both as a BFO and with the flip of a switch, changes to a TR type detector. Considering it is using a mono type coil commonly found on a BFO, I was surprised that a TR could be built using it. Anyway, it does work and quite well for the old TR type design.

One thing that intrigues me is when in the TR mode, it is less sensitive to ferrous objects and has decent sensitivity to today's coins.

On the down side, this detector suffers from the ground sensitivity associated with both TR and BFO type detectors.

What is interesting is the fact that the tuning capacitor is used for both the BFO and the TR mode

Now, I need to see if I can add a couple of features when time permits that might make it more useable in bad ground.

Once again, if anyone has a schematic of this detector and is willing to share a copy of it, I would appreciate it.

Reg

Teknetics Mark 1 air test on several coils, (10 replies)

Here are some air test results on various coils with the Mark 1, Please bear with me using a cell phone is a tough cookie keying in data on such a small key pad.

These are air test not buried test results, but will give you an idea which coils fare better for certain applications.

J-Rob mentioned his 7.25" coil air tested a quarter at 10-11" inches, my test results using the same coil and a quarter were very similar. Off by an inch but that doesn't mean one detector fared better than the other, ones hearing or minor differences may effect the outcome of test results. Regardless, These are to help inform a Teknetics user which coil they may like to purchase in the future for certain types of hunting.

Starting with the stock 7.25" coil, here are the test results.

7.25" Teknetics coil......(Penny..10-11") (Nickel..11-12") (Quarter..11-12")
8" Bountyhunter coil, ..(Penny..9-10") (Nickel..9-10") (Quarter..10-11")
10" Teknetics coil,...(Penny..12-13") (Nickel..12-13") (Quarter..13-14)
12" Teknetics Hothead..(Penny ..13-14") Nickel..13-14") (Quarter..14-15")
7"X10" Fisher F-2/F-4 DD coil,..(Penny..9-10) (Nickel..10-11") (Quarter..10-11")

Overall, The stock 7.25 Teknetics coil is a good coil for both separation and decent depth. Plus, Less acceptable to EMI over the other coils. Also, Suprisely the 12" Hothead fared a good inch over the 10" Teknetics coil, so some truth to what's said on larger coils they will detect deeper.

Paul (Ca)

Both machines are in good working order. The Neuman-Wilson is in like new condition. It was my wifes machine which did not get the use my Whites did and it was purchase a few years later. She got tired of swinging the 5/DB and wanted one of her own. I'm just wondering if these 2 analog machines are of value to anyone. Dont know if there's a collectors market for them. The still work, find coins and jewelry. Both have GEB and discrimination. They both have been sitting for 15 plus years. Broke them out yesterday and fired them up. Worked fine. Didnt find anything deeper than 4 inches but in this clay soil I doubt if stuff gets very deep that quickly. I moved into this 1925 house in 2007 and here I am 5 years later checking my own yard. I bought the unit a couple years ago, and it has a White's ULC 950 coil. Could this be the issue? I am new to detecting, so I read up on this coil and it is not the one that belongs on the Eagle, but I don't know if it is compatible or not. Any help would be appreciated.

6000 XL pro COIL Questions (17 replies)

Hi. Finally got a beautiful, pristine 6000 xl pro. Even the box is mint. Couldn't have more than a few test hours on it.
Read for hours on this site and.....everywhere I could -Which led me to the decision to seek this MD. I could not use my 6000 Di series 3 anymore due to its weight. It was fine when I was younger and doing labor work. I got it in '83. Now I'm older and a full time musician. The weight just made it so I can't do work & MD w/o a few days in between.
I missed the past 20-25 xl pros (either by minutes or they were too much $) Glad I missed them because this is new/old stock. Serial # indicate 97th day of 2000.
I missed so many that I actually got a 705 xterra. Great weight & balance. Cool MD. BUT-I missed the PP, DEPTH & the accurate meter. YEP-sometimes time dictates that I cherry pick. (I can always go back when time allows).
Thanks to this site-I'll have a manual tomorrow (in print)

Questions- From reading here-I want a Black Max 5.3/ Bullseye Coil. Anyone know of any sources for new/old stock?
Some of this info was dated-are there any new coils -like DD's that: would be compatible or a recent improvement?

I have a 4" (by ruler) 624-0187 coil (white w blue sticker) with the same 5 pin connector that I used with the 6000 Di series 3. Will this be compatible with the xl?

Is there a weather cover/rain jacket made for this unit? I'm thinking that I would like to add electric grease to the tops of the pots & trigger. I'll probably plastic coat the trigger.

Finally-Anyone know of a source or tech that can do the TONE mod?

I'm ok w the auto GB. I will use that function as well as manual GB (did it for years w the Di)

I'm really pleased to have this analog- it 's more like-ME than the digital.MD. I can swing it between jobs too.

Thanks for all of the great info.

GTzer

Compass xp350 (1 reply)

acquired this unit, tried it before and was clueless. got a second chance at it. thanks to some of you guys, i have found a great machine. now the places i tested it are not choice real estate, intown trashy park, but i am impressed. i got a gold plated band:thumbdown:, but a nice token:clapping:, hard times one--ALL QUALITY MINTS --5CENT PACKAGE. and a lot of clad. and few tabs than ever. the unit ran smooth in the iron that was there, i have hunted this place many times. pinpoint was easy--learning a long big iron signal was also easy. depth was exceptional in my book. past the handle guard on a leshe style gator digger on several coins. this place had some of the dirt moved around putting in a sidewalk so late sixties coins can be deep. no silver no gold but a machine that i believe will produce nicer stuff. it did need a little adjust on the front end and i got a measured airtest at eight inches on a nickel. i can live with that. thanks guys hope to post some real finds soon.
