Infinium ....good choice for coin shooting? (3 replies)

I have been a MD'er for over 25 years. Never have owned a PI and was wondering if the Infinium would be a good choice for the beaches of Florida and also for coin hunting here in Ohio. I recently was able to compare a TDI and a Minelab E-trac. The TDI was deeper in many instances and I was impressed. I really liked the TDI's ability to null out iron. But it is not waterproof.

I really like the idea of having a machine that can be also used in the water. I love water hunting in Florida and so after looking around, I see that the Infinium may be the best choice for me.

Is the Garrett Infinium a machine I should consider for coin shooting on dry land? Many of the parks I am at are pretty trashy. I am also going to be out west for some nugget hunting.

Is the Garret system of ID ing with sounds enough to make it acceptable as a coin shooter?

Wow, What a deal I got on a Garrett Scorpian Gold Stinger:garrett::super: (1 reply)

Well I paid Garrett $137.50 for my new Scorpian last week and have had it for a few days now. All I have is the control box and one 5x10 coil, but it works well. I am impressed with it so far. I have the coil hooked to an extra GTI 2500 stem I have just to play around with it. I belt mount it and lean over and detect ground holding the little lower stem. Just around the home though.

Heres how I got it.
Some fellow friends/gold miners of mine had the Scorpian but it didnt work, so they gave it to me back in MARCH at the gold show in Roseburg, Oregon to send to Garrett for fixing. Garrett fixed it and had been calling them to pay for it to return it back to them. I saw them in Happy Camp this Summer and the husband fell real ill and was rushed to hospital in Medford:sad:. Good thing he is doing much better now.:clapping: But they accrued alot of medical bills and didnt want to pay Garrett for getting the Scorpian back. I offered to pay for, it if I get to keep it...ha, they said OK:super:, as they didnt see themselves getting out much now with bills and continued hospital visits to make sure he will be ok.

So yesterday they told me they had shipped the remainder of the Scorpion (stem, handle, etc) to me so I will have a complete one! Woohoo! She said just send me a small nuggey you got this year dredging, I said, no problem. Been wanting to get one for awhile now. Other good news is, they have a Garrett CX III for backup. So they can detect still.
I did some air test and buried test with it and was pleased. It picked up a .1 gram nuggy in air test and I buried a .25 nuggey 2.5 inches in the ground and it picked it up with a decent signal which I would have dug it while hunting. I also tested same nugget with my GTI 2500 at same depth and heard it, but was not as pronounced as the stinger as per the higher frequncey of the Scorpian.
I might have missed the target with the 2500 in the field, maybe, but the Stinger could make it pop out just a bit more because the 15k ground hog circuit to make it a "dig it target".

So there you go folks, Hope to get some, out in the field test to share for you's here soon and pics to go with.
So far so good,
Alan

My Discrimination Experiences With The Infinium...Any One Else Have Any More Tips To Add? (3 replies)

- As a general rule....gold = Hi-Low signal, silver & copper = Low-Hi signal and iron reads both, so you need to utilize the iron check

- Use the reverse discrimination...If there is a change in tone, dig it. If there is no change in tone, it's usually iron

- Just searching for gold? Just dig Hi-Low signals

- Looking for silver and copper coins or rings? Just dig Low-Hi signals

- Bobby pins/ straight nails give a distinct double bleep, especially in certain directions over the targets.

- A long drawn out audio duration from going over a target means that it is a large target like a tin can.....just leave it!

- Gold rings tend to give a more softer sound (high-low) compared with bottle caps, which really like to scream at you due to all those extra eddies formed from the uneven ridges

- Increasing the thresh-hold gives you even more depth

- dig those targets giving an echo, as they can be two coins close to each other, a bi-metal coin, a large copper or silver coin or as I recently discovered, a ring made up of two different metals. In my case, it was a stainless steel ring with a gold band around it.

I finally got the 10"x14" mono search coil for my Infinium LS the other day and couldn't wait to try it out. Wifey joined me with her Ace 250 with sniper coil and she hit the towel line while I worked the shallow surf. I dug only high-low signals and after many many pull tabs and whatzits I was pleasantly surprised to see this 14k gold ring. By then I was pooped and walked over to my honey to show her my find. She showed me this monster silver chain .925 that she found in the dry sand on the towel line. It must have been lost recently 'cause it's untarnished. We had a very good day. Many hunts havin' fun and findin' nuttin', then we both hit the jackpot(so to speak). She says that the stone on the ring that I found looks real, but I don't know. I guess I'll get it appraised. It's small. Maybe .3 carat? That 10"x14" mono search coil for the Infinium LS is much easier to use in the surf than the stock 10"x14" double "D". It does go deeeeeep, too! Happy Hunting!

Same problem as it had when new a little over a month ago. The first one worked fine dry but as soon as you ducked your head underwater it went crazy. some sort of interaction between the UW headphones and the coil. It would always work fine till the headphones got submerged. Garrett replace the whole thing as it was brand new. The new unit along with UW headphones worked fine for just over a month and several hunts. I guess the headphones are the problem but I will talk with Garrett tomorrow. I am sure they will want the whole mess back again and i will lose a month of it's use. Very disappointing again. I was just beginning to like it. fortunately I have my CZ's ready to go. It still works when dry but that is not why i own it.

I can't believe the weather. It's still hot out, with temperatures remaining above zero at night. The water was crystal clear, and not a soul around, except some people off in the distance fishing in a boat. There were plenty of signals to keep me occupied all day. The loot factor was good, and I did manage a couple of rings, and a gold bracelet that eventually turned out to be gold not. :( Also got another bracelet with (fake) diamonds in it. That too got my heart racing. :)

Below are the jewellery pics:

<div id="div_00e6a1314fe374c4ccc7509fe0fcc0d5"

Front toe of the coil - better discrimination? (4 replies)

I got this off of goldminingcentreDOT com. Has anyone utilized this method. First time I have heard of it.

"Other procedures to fully utilize the Infinium LS discrimination are as follows. When a target is detected, take note of the tone you are getting first. Then move only the front toe of the coil over the target and check the target response tone. You will quite often find that a target may be giving a high or low tone first, but by using the front toe of the coil, this tone will change. I have found this discrimination test a more accurate way of determining a targets conductivity. Sometimes a plated bit of steel will give a high tone, but by using the toe of the coil, it will change to a low tone, indicating that it is more likely to be steel. Then use the reverse discrimination to confirm the targets possible identity."

Got Appraisal Back on Diamond Ring - WOW! (2 replies)

Just got the Appraisal of one of the rings I found on my third hunt after getting the Infinium back in July. I was neck deep in the water at a lake and found a really nice Diamond ring around a foot in the muck. It gave a HIGH-LOW tone and I could tell it was a good target just by the way the sound came into the head phones, REALLY LOUD! After some time of digging and pinpointing in the muddy water I finally was able to get it into the scoop. When I looked down into the scoop all I could do was grin, I couldn't talk, I just shoved that ring on my finger as tight as I could, closed my fist and slowly walked out of the water. My wife came down to the shore and I opened my hand to show her, she asked "is it real?"

It was, and has turned out to be some ring! The Appraisal came back at $5375.00!!:yikes:

The ring is not too uncommon, but the Large Diamond was exceptional in the grading, close to flawless!

Total carat was 3/4 as it has one large stone and two smaller sisters.

I am really pleased with the Infinium to say the least. Beginners luck? Of Course! But I do believe it takes a sense of locality, timing, speed of detection, knowledge of the machine, and perseverance. If you want to find treasure then you have to put the work and the time in for the rewards also. So far my wife and I have found over 24 rings in two months. We have also put a lot of time in. Not all the rings were found in the water, not all were found with the Infinium. But the machine has paid for itself in a very short time with the loot it alone has detected.

A tip O' the hat to Mr Garrett, I thank you for a great instrument. Guys here on the forum, I thank you for the sharing of information.

Anyone out there doubting the Infiniums capabilities or questioning themselves about buying a PI machine like the Infinium should send me a private note with your phone number, I would be happy to talk to you in person about my experiences so far, and I am a newbie using it!

I did get lucky, so can you, now go get yours:thumbup:
