My First Decent Finds

So my mom moved to this 40 acre farm with a circa 90 year old house on it. It was said on this house they used to raise sheep and many people would come in the old days and see and buy the sheep.
I brought my ETRAC out there today and searched for only about 45 minutes and within 5 minutes of getting there, I nagged my first silver. Not just any silver, a 1920 (or 1929) Merc! And then about 10 minutes later, near the same spot, a 1959 Rosie in super good shape. Even the Merc was in pretty good shape. Then about 10 minutes later a 1945 Nickel. I was SOOO excited. My mom and I were doing the treasure dance.
I've been hunting parks in old neighborhoods (100+ years) and getting nothing but trash and a small amount of clad. The oldest being like 1973 penny. No luck at all. There is just SOOO much trash in parks, it's very difficult. So many aluminum cans.
I'm here in Omaha, Nebraska, and I've come to the conclusion that small towns are the way to go. The majority of them have not been hunted and small towns were filled with farmers and businessmen who probably carried around a lot of money. I'll be driving out to small towns from now on to do my detecting! Unless of course I need change for a pop machine and just need some clad. =)

Nice finds!

BUT, I will tell you it isnt any easier in the rural sections.
I live in a rural area and I asked to detect an old bible school from the early 1900's.
I was told by the owner that I am like the 30th guy that asked this year.
And, that is a private area.
In fact, I must have drove past that place 500 times and never even seen it before over the past 10 years.

And, my finds (when I do find something) aren't anything to brag about either.
Silver is sparse as our father's generation pretty much cherry picked it clean; and each day that passes more is taken from the soils.
Old silver is always going to be tough to come by in the "open areas"--at least in any numbers.
When you do find things--it's usually dimes as they are so small they were missed.

I think the houses are going to be the best bet. Parks everywhere are detected out. There is a small park is a town of 150 that I want to give it a try, but we'll see how it goes. It's the door knockers who are going to win. There are enough houses out there so there is still plenty to detect.

I only had a limited amount of time when I was at this house yesterday and I'm going to go back detect every square inch. I'll post what I find. I have a good feeling about that place.

Omaha's hard to hunt as well. I've never found a silver coin in 3 hunts that I've been there. Another place is Osceola. I've hit that little park along 92 and didn't come up with anything descent there. I might try once more before writing it off. I always thought Wahoo would be a great place, but probably like Omaha.

Keep it up.

NebTrac
