I went to my dads house today to hang out for awhile when he asked how I like my new machine. I told him about a few thing I've found lately and he wanted to go out in the yard and give it a try. He didn't have to asked twice lol. I have hit his house dozens of time with not much luck only found clad and junk. We hunted for 2 hours and pulled some nice coins finally. We ended up with 3 silver dimes 1951 plain, 1958 d, & 1964 plain also pulled 2 wheats both 1945 d. Not a bad day at all very happy with this machine thus far. Happy hunting!!!

This older gentleman let us in his backyard. The best thing about his backyard is that it backs up to some trenches, and we can never hunt down the side of the trenches because its on his property. Since we decided cherry pick,(Oh we will be back for the sweet deep) I removed my 6 inch DD and and put on the stock coil in the owner's back yard. Swicthing coils only takes about three minutes and my friend grabbed his first button. I stood up hit the N/C(and waitedddddd) he popped another one and about 5 inches deep.I asked him to let me scan it so I can get a reading. On the etrac the button was 12-18/20(My friend MXT it came up 40) yep folks thats a PULLTAB and I dug 5 12-18/20 and got 5 PULLTABS.
I ended up crushing him on bullets, but took a beating on buttons. Next time we go back I will use the 6inch DD and grab me a darn Button.

Thank You.

PS. I TTF and line out 01-01 to 01-38 to kill hot rock and black out 27 on down.

The neighbor's house has been empty for 11 months (foreclosed) but the grass was cut this past week. Granted the house is only from the 40's but figured there might be something good. Had intentions of digging iffy signals to try to learn the sounds a little better but got a solid high tone at 5-6". Dug down to find a nice 1940 Washington. Then a little further got the silver plated spoon. It says Vernon Silver Plated. It's in rough shape but still pretty cool. I think there's more stuff back there but I get a lot of junk signals so may wait til I get an 8x6 coil.

When the soil is moist the horseshoe shaped plug goes down just the way it came up but when it is dry I get the feeling if someone mows it shortly after it may just pull the plug back up.
A BIG First For Me, But She's Tiny... (12 replies)

Went out after work yesterday with LDC. We went back to a park that we had gone to once before, where LDC had found two silver dimes at. The grass had been cut, so we thought it would help us sniff out a few more keepers. After a couple of hours of detecting we had only found some clad & couple of wheats, and it was getting late. We left the park looking for another spot based on some info from a nice guy that stopped to talk about the hobby. That led us to a door knock of another fellow that knew a lot of history in the area, and that took us to the owner of an old abandoned house that we wanted to hunt. The gentleman that owns the old house is a serious relic hunter and showed us his incredible collection of CW finds. We spent a lot of time talking and looking at all his displays, but could spend hours there to see it all. He gave us the OK to look around the house, but by then it was getting dark. We decide to give it a quick go since we were right there. I put my 6x8 coil on and ran in TTF and the Etrac was telling me my battery was just about dead when I started working close to the house with all the old nails. I got a iffy Indian sort of signal and dug my plug. I located the coin and started to remove the dirt, when I see this very thin, very small silver coin with a hole in it. At this point I'm fired up that this could be what I was hoping for. I quickly run over to my truck to get my water to rinse it off, hold it up to the light in my truck and sure enough it's my first Seated coin and it's an 1839 Half Dime! It is very worn, holed and has an A scratched on it, but I think it's awesome and wished I could hear the stories from 174 years of history. I ran over to LDC to tell him what I found, he had just pulled up a French coin from the 40's. We hated to leave, but it was too dark to hunt and had to get back home. It's wild to think about the series of events that took place to get to this little coin, and makes for a fun story. We are hoping to get a second hunt at this place to see if it holds any more surprises. HH David

<div id="div_e465576e681f22b2e6e382e70ccc517c"

I took my 9 year old girl and a friend that has been wanting to go with me for months. He loves history and anything war related. It's great to see a kids reaction to every signal and what comes out. We hit a yard that didn't produce a ton of relics, but we had a blast with what we did find. We found two smashed thimbles with ads on them, one from Tennessee & one is a Churngold Butterine Co. from Cincinnati Ohio. Also dug a "Hinds Honey And Almond Cream Bloomfield NJ" bottle & what I believe to be an old Scout pin with St.Louis 04, not sure of the age but it looks early. The cuff link is neat with the flashy "stone" in it. The token is a WWI "Good Luck To Our Army" token, that was made around 1914-1918. Only found a few wheats & clad but no silver. When I dropped our buddy off he was so excited to show his Mom what he had found, I gave him a camo finds pouch that he used for his relics & I put a couple of CW Minnie & Round balls for a nice little surprise.
Little Gold, BIG silver, Large Copper and Baby Raccoon (14 replies)

Well this was a pretty good weekend, and I was ready for a good one! I have hunted everyday this week and had nothing to show for it except for a pile of wheats, clad and one indian from the old fairgrounds I have been hunting.

Saturday I picked up Stringfrenzy (Josh) and off we went to a farm he had permission for, he had hunted there before but said he did not get much. I got the brass stirrup along the sidewalk about 10" deep and thought that was a good start, well from there we both went almost 2 hours till another keeper. I walked to the far end of the property and found 2 flat buttons then nothing again till I was about to give up and started swinging my way back over to Josh and I got a sweet 12-47 at 7" deep. I am not sure how I missed this the first time thru here, but sure glad I got it before I left, out popped my first large cent of the yr, 1837. On the other side of the yard withing 5 minutes Josh pulled a 1853 LC.

Then we went up to a house in town he had hunted a bit before and I got a couple wheats, then got the sterling ring, it is marked 10K gold filled sterling....pretty neat, inside is gold outside silver, Also got a 1917 merc there as well. The owner had a baby raccoon that was absolutely adorable and I asked if I could hold him for a pic, well he ran right up and sit on my hat and made for a great photo...lol

Sunday I met up with Starky (Erich) and we went knocking doors, did a few curb strips, from the curbs I got a 5 cent trade token, tons of clad, couple wheats. And the last stop was an old house, yard was tiny, the owner said it had been detected before but we were welcome to try our luck, first dig was a 1935 wheat, nothing special, clad quarters were literally everywhere, dug over $5 in clad, I dug a signal in the front and when I opened the plug, there lay the nice shooter marble, that was a bonus, underneath it was a shotgun shell, good thing I dig all those signals! Last dig there was the hefty sterling bracelet. It is just shy of 1/2 oz of sterling, not bad way to end the weekend!

<div id="div_a857eab684d8fae9f23ff24836fd037a"

The class ring was inscribed with the owners first and middle name and the year she graduated so we did a little research and found out she now lived 30 miles from us, I contacted her and we met today and I returned the ring to her she was so thrilled to get the ring back. Here are pictures of my last couple of hunts along with the ring.

The Old Trolley Stop (8 replies)

Drove the 20+ miles to get to the Soccer Field from Monday's hunt only to find about a hundred kids using the field so I had to
go to Plan B. There is a an old trolley stop that I've hunted in the past with my Explorer II that was my backup but I didn't get there until after lunch.
The last time I was there I only found a few wheaties so I figured the E-Trac would find a few goodies. It always pays to have Plan B !!
The 4 wheats and the 26 Merc were found in a small area and then not much else. About 50 feet away I got a 12-40 signal at 4 inches. Cutting the
plug and pulling it away revealed a silver dime in the hole. Hmmmmm......doesn't look like a wheaty??? I pulled the coin from the hole and realized it was a Barber dime!
This reading was a little low for a Barber dime so I waived it by the coil and it still read 12-40! I immediately thought of the post from a few days ago about how to tell the wheaty
signals from the silver signals and the advice that everyone had given was to dig them all. Good advice, let's keep diggin' them wheaty signals. Happy Hunting everyone.

Vacant 1860 home - 3 hr hunt = 3 firsts and 4 SILVERS! (11 replies)

Made some adjustments to TTF based on G4E's website. Basically just needed to discriminate 01-01 through 01-31 to get rid of the iron wrap around. That made a HUGE difference. I was hoping the iron was mainly just around the house but I tried several sections of the front and backyard and it's everywhere. Got there at 6:30am and the first target was a 1912 wheat penny. Then dug a solid 11-46 and got a 1944 Merc. Figured I'd try the back for a change of scenery after 2 hrs. Got my first silver quarter finally!! Nothing fancy, a '57 Washington. It looks terrible though. Not shiny at all and almost looks like it had been painted or something. But it's still silver. I was running out of time and knew it because my phone was blowing up in my pocket (the wife always reminds me of what time I say I'll be home). I went to the side of the house where the driveway is and swung in the grass for a minute. Hit a real jumpy signal. Anywhere from 12-12 to 07-46 or something like that. Dug down about 6" and got my first Buffalo (no date). Put the X-1 back in the hole and got another signal, this time a 1920 Merc that I scratched the heck out of. Put the X-1 in again and got another signal. It was near the bottom edge of the hole. As soon as I moved the dirt away I could see a Barber quarter - a 1906 (another first for me). I don't know how I didn't scratch it! It was right where my digger went down. I still struggle pinpointing quarters and have scratched my fair share of clad ones. I'm glad this one was spared the shiny streak.
I was using the stock coil in TTF today and I'm hoping to pick up an 8x6 SEF soon. I think that combo will be killer at this site. Everything but the '44 Merc was in with iron.

I've recently been hunting an old area which has turned up surprisingly little in the way of coins. Lots of iron trash but I've also found an 1890's opera glass lens, an antique lighter, and a military button from the 20's. I thought it was cleaned out but then I found a 1936 Mercury and a bunch of 60's clad. So I suspect that there is some fill dirt on what is basically unhunted ground.

What settings should I use to get my etrac to go as deep as possible? I'm guessing manual sensitivity 26+, recover deep on, trash density high, and...? I'm using a stock coil btw.

Both signals were a bit iffy, honestly I almost didn't dig both of them!!!

Starting to like this ultimate coil a bit. The Rosie was in some pretty good trash. When I put the plug back and swept over it with an open screen, there was iron everywhere. Probably explains the jumpy numbers. The Mercury wasn't in any trash, but was pretty deep, maybe 8-10" (I didn't officially measure but it was deeper than the blade on my Predator digging tool.

I don't know what happened to that Mercury. My concern is this, he has 2 young kids that are very interesting in metal detecting. Ive been detecting with them around before and they follow me and get their fingers in the hole when im digging, and Im just afraid they are going to get hurt or they are going to wreck the holes I am digging so I leave dead spots. Or if I find something they will grab it and scratch the heck out of it. Im glad they are interested in it... But I am also worried about my equipment and my professionalism...Hope that makes sense. Have any of you dealt with that, or have any good advice?
Thanks helgriffan

Astonished !! (11 replies)

After using a different brand detector, and a Minelab Se Pro for several years I tried an E-Trac....

Astonished might not be a proper explanation of my thoughts after learning a workable setting for my area. I used an E-trac once before for about a day.. Made the error of thinking the Se Pro was better because I was familiar with it and dumped the Etrac after one day.. MY BAD !!

The E-Trac makes many of my prior hunted sights like new places to hunt.. Silver, and other items I must have missed with the prior detectors are now being found.. I'm not talking about places I only hunted once, or even twice. I'm speaking of hunted over, and over places that now produce good finds using the Etrac.. I can only imagine what a CTX 3030 would be able to do if like all says, it's an even better detector... For now I am very, very happy with the Etrac results........ To be blunt they are Astonishing !!

You will have to try it to believe it... :bouncy:

Losing FE-CO on Targets (1 reply)

I generally hunt by sound, but sometimes need to check FE-CO on a target. I am noticing when sweeping over targets, I am losing my FE-CO numbers. I physically need to set the coil to the side for them to come up. Any thoughts on settings that can fix this issue? Thanks!

How many coins are beyond the depth of detection? (9 replies)

I think there are way more coins beyond the depth capabilities of the modern detector than are in the depth range. I've hunted way too many prime old spots that I know have never been detected and have come up with little to nothing. I have done very well since starting back up after not detecting for probably 15 years but I did far better back in the early 80s when I first started. Back then most of the silver coin finds were in the 5-7 inch range so I imagine if they were that deep then they are quite a bit deeper now. When you think about it, back then mercury dimes had only been out of circulation 35 years and silver rosies and washingtons 16 years.
