Wireless behind-the-neck headphones for the VX3? (no replies)

I've got a VX3 on the way. I wear headphones whenever searching thanks to being hearing impaired. That's fine when the weather is cool and I only need a cap but we have run plumb out of cool in Texas now and won't see any until at least October. I prefer to wear a hat with brim to keep the sun off my face and neck in hot weather but over-the-head phones don't allow this. I read that the VX3 is already "set up for wireless headphones" but the ones from White's are over-the-head. I almost bought an XP Deus because of the lightweight behind-the-neck wireless headphones but backed away for a couple of other reasons. So I'm asking if anyone knows of a good set of wireless b-t-n phones that will work with the VX3. Lightweight and no lag preferably.

Thanks,
Storm

Mineralization has me talking to myself (7 replies)

Every time I head up into the campgrounds of the central Washington cascades, I tell myself "you can't find it if it isn't there", and every time I head home I ask myself "what am I doing wrong"?

I think it's there! Last year I found a mercury laying on the surface, and another about 2 inches deep in loose sand. In over 25 trips to the area, that's all I found, and no clad over 3 inches deep. A couple of weeks ago I was in the same area as the mercs, and I had only found 6 pennies in a few hours work. I walked over to the river so the dog could get a drink, looked down, and saw a round green object. It was a 1920 wheatie. As I was picking it up I saw another, this one was a 1919 (I think, it's a little crusty). In a half dozen trips this year, I still haven't dug anything over 3 inches. Since I spend so much time hunting in the cascades, I really want to figure these sites out.

My default program (10"DD) accepts all VDIs and assigns a zero tone for -95 to -8. I run mixed mode around the "outsides" of the present fire pits, but it gets too noisy as you get close to the pits, so I switch to discrimination. Rx is 10, Disc is 90, AM is 75, Filt is 7.5 high band and an RD of 65. I'm running correlate with a span of 35 and a wrap of -94.

Some yesterday samples: my default program and the ground tracking probe = VDI 0f -95, strength 35.+ to 36. When I ground balanced and measured again it actually increased to 37.5 - 38.5. As I dropped the Rx, the strength went down. At an Rx of 4 I hit a strength of 14.2 to 14.4. I restored my program to see what Disc would do. Dropping from 90 (36+) down to 30 took me to 31; not much of an improvement. Restored to my original settings and tested AM. No real change here either. Strength went from 35.+ at 75 to 33.5 at 35. (As you probably guessed, moving a few inches with the coil could cause small changes in the reading. I wasn't worried about absolutes, just relative changes.) Switching filters didn't move things either. Strength moved around between 35 and 31. In the end, if I were working off of the ground probe only, I would probably have changed my Rx to 5 or 6 (the general rule of "reduce strength to around 20%), and left everything else the same. But I also thought I'd try burying a coin to see what happens.

With a quarter off to the side of a 6 inch hole, I GBed my default program. I'd say 2 out of three hits were pretty good positives VDIs between 60 and 90, a few were good low 80 hits. The quarter pinpointed well with a 2.5 dominant at a depth of 5.75 inches. To bring this long story to an end, 5HZ produced little change, and I thought they weren't as clear or consistent. I lost the target at 10 and 12.5 HZ. I kept the 7.5 high band and lowered the Rx to 6; GBed - and lost the target. By this time I was anxious to get hunting, and frustrated with my results. I restored to my default setting (which saw the buried quarter the best), changed my RD to 80, and started hunting - slowly. I found 42 pieces of clad and 42 pounds of aluminum trash - none of it over 3 inches. And once again I went home wondering?????

Isn't stability the ultimate test? If I'm stable at 40% mineralization, am I really loosing anything by not reducing the mineralization to 20% or less?

As a PS: I actually ran smoother than "normal" yesterday. I never tried mixed mode. Stayed in discrimination and accept all VDIs for the entire day. I would have tried a best data version - maybe next time; same with the 4x6 coil. But "by the book", the 10"DD and correlate should have been the best??? Also, I never even looked at the sensitivity probe, is it something I could/should use in this situation? Am I confusing sensitivity probe noise with ground probe strength?

Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated. I don't know what else I can try. Thanks, Dave

V3i finds from May 15 (6 replies)

As an earlier post mentioned we are not seeing a whole lot of stuff posting up here. Sometimes I will put off posting if I'm going out often and sometimes I'm swinging other brands or models. Never the less the V3i is a very capable and diverse detector and I'm surprised there aren't more finds being posted here. Nearby is an 1820 home with about an acre of property that I have always been interested in detecting. Monday the owner gave me the carte blanc to detect his property any time... He had seen me and my stepson detecting at a neighbors property and came by to see what we had found. The 1820 homestead has had much soil moved around over the years and the barn was burnt down and removed in the 1960's. Sadly the visions of 19th century coins faded as few items of antiquity were detected. I may be able to coax some out another time after a good saturating rain. Two silver dimes, 3 wheat back cents, 6 Mexican coins, 10 cent Spain euro, musket ball, 1953 & '54 CT DMV registration tags and other assorted keepers turned up. I started with the 6x10 DD knowing there would be areas where I'd have to pick through iron. After 3 hours I swapped to the D2 and recovered a few deeper coins from the less iron infested areas. I think cleaning out some of the iron may help locate some older coins. I really expected to find at least one large cent....
The silver ring was returned to a neighbor who's child lost this confirmation gift over a year ago. The 1820 home owner went to deliver the ring to his neighbor and told me they never said "thanks". I guess that they are not on the best terms from what I was told. Still, they might not have ever seen it again if we weren't detecting, go figure.<div id="div_9894d246609d62b139249b2186ec85e2"

I have been using the white 12 by 10 sef and really liking it . I have been working a waterfront on some collapsed pier structures . The ground is covered with iron. If I go all metal it sounds like the needle going across a record.(I wonder what percent here have actually heard that?).I use relic with recovery down to 45 and gain at 6 or 7. Targets are usually 3 to 4 inches on top of clay. A super slow sweep and digging everything .Goldbill

My old school grounds from mid 60 (6 replies)

Most of you that are familiar with me at this point know that I am just getting back into detecting. Have done any Since the early 90's. I have decided to purchasing the Whites V3I. But I wanted to tell you about my hunting location that I plan to hunt out. I am 59 years old and the grammar school where I went was shut down in the mid 1960. 67 or 68 I believe it was. After it was closed it was taken over by some devil worshiping cults that came into this area and eventually the old school was burnt down. it sat on about 15 acres of land and housed at the time it was closed about 175 kids that had always been bused to school from all over the county. This was the only county school around and any one outside the city limit ares had to go to this school. It had a soft ball field, a base ball field, an area where we played basket ball. An are we had set up with boards to pitch penny's or coins what ever we had in our pocket if we were lucky enough to have money. One area where we played aintly over . Which was a game that we would take our socks off and fill them with marbles or coins or any think else we had in our pockets to give weight to the socks. Tie the top of the socks and toss them across this old building and holler ain't ly over when we tossed and the kids on the other side of the building would catch the sock. Had another area where we plied marbles and then of course some of the bigger kids played in other ares where they could hid and play with the girls. One area had huge maple trees that we climbed and set under. Then there was other areas that we just did what ever in. But my point is that this old school grounds is out in the sticks still a at this time and now has a small building where there is a county fire department that no one stay at unless there is a fire and they go pick up the equipment to go fight county fires. Most of these areas that had activity going on no one would know unless they went to school there be for it was shut down. Some of the old ball field stands and bleachers are still there and the one that are there had been relocated toward the last part of the years just before closing and the old bleachers were torn down. Again you wouldn't know these ares unless you went to school there at that time. I am frequently by there and have never seen any one metal detecting as there seem to be very few around here that metal detect. I don't think this old school grounds has been hit very hard with any detecting or not any serious detecting any way. I can't wait to get the V3I and try it out on these grounds as any coins would mostly be prior to 1965 or so. The school was built in 1888 and as I said was on about 15 acres of land. There were always a lot of activity there because it was the only county elementary school in the county. I wish I had some one close to go and help me detect this area because I know its going to be a blast and I know all the location where the kids played. Where all the ball fields were. Where all the swing sets were with monkey bars and see saw and merry go rounds ect were located. There is no way this has been hunted out and the land is still owned by the county and it still out in the sticks and no houses very close as it is a very remote area of the county. Once I get going on it I will report back. if at that time any one that may wont to come hunt with me is more than welcome. O e thing I do know is that most of the kids always had extra milk money or money to get a pop sickle every day. I know how they went into the cafeteria and know the route they had to take out the back door stuffing change in their pockets as the went. I also know that more ended up loosing half there money each week because of holes in there pockets. Most of the people from this area was poor but still usually had 25 or 50 cents in there pockets. I just wanted to share this story as it is true and hope it becomes a great place to hunt.

V3i screen change (1 reply)

One thing that I always try to do with a new detector, and Lord knows I seem to always have 2-3 juggling, is get a rain cover for my detectors. Not just for the weather, but to prevent the screen from getting any scratches on it. Nothing cosmetic takes the value off a metal detector than having a nice scratch or gouge in the screen. It's also annoying having to look at the same scratch across on the screen. Most options are to send the detector in, I guess? I have always been careful, so I don't know. Some screens scratch easier than others. The Fisher's F-series screens scratch SO EASILY. I would just wipe the dust off my F2 with a soft cloth and I could see the scratches in the light. My T2 was the same way. My AT Pro seems more durable, but a nice muddy glove or sharp tree branch could do a nice number on a clear screen, especially when in nasty weather testing the all-terrain of it.
My V3i has such a sweet color HD screen that I got a cover for it. I then got something off of a friend and was surprised it was an option! I replaceable LCD screen cover for the V3i! You can see it in the picture. It was just a few $$ too! What a great idea! It allows you to replace the LCD screen cover very easily and without having to send the unit in to have it done... or at least, not trying some home-made winging-it replacement. get a scratch on the screen?... no problem!

The home owner lost his deceased Fathers ring back in 1999 while gardening around the house.

I found little clad, but lots of deep signals and iron was not overwhelming in the front yard. Trash was present but there where areas where I was able to ground balance to 13". This doesnt usually happen for me.

I found the Rosie at around 4" surrounded by iron and alongside a rebar reinforced driveway.

The copper ring was found down at rediculous depth (8+"), There was zero iffyness about digging, the v3i and sef combo lock on rings so nicely.

The back yard was not so friendly but I did happen to find my oldest dated coin yet. Depth was around the 5" mark and there was no question to dig. It is a Shan-lung and depending on who you ask it was minted from 1795-99 or 1796-1802. The mint mark on the back is from Pao Chi. Its not worth the holder I put it in but it is my oldest coin that I have been able to date, so that makes me happy.:detecting:

I ran my 5.3 over this yard around a year ago and missed these deeper targets that the SEF picked up like they where on the surface. I love this mixed mode :clapping:

Do the filters tailor the GB to swing speed? It rather seems like apples and oranges to me. Do the filters override the GB that the machine suggests?

I found a AAA School Crossing Guard badge at 6 inches today. There was no corrosion at all, bright silver. I thought that I found the motherload of Mercuries. I wonder what they were made of, or coated with.

Great forum.

Thanks,

Jack
