I myself have never used a White's machine....I like the graphics they are introducing, but even more interesting would be the audio. The Explorer has an excelleny audio response as many of us know....only dow side is that you can only map it to either the Conductive or Ferrous axis of the SmartFind display. Maybe with the E-Trac this is less relevant because of FE-12, but I think they really dropped the ball in terms of what COULD have been done audio-wise.

So any V3 users out there that can elaborate?

In other words, I miss some signals.

I'm not sure if it is because of being tired and over doing it. All I know is that when I am out especially with the Excalibur, I will after about 6 hours start to miss tell tale signals.

It also gets to a point that I get a slight ringing in my ears. I have excellent hearing and can hear a flea fart at over a mile. I am never tired of detecting and can go on for hour after hour. All my headphones are top of the line and I do not over do the volume.

Maybe I am just getting older ?

Or is there a certain time that I should just say...enough for today ?

How long can you go without losing the edge ?

I just loaded iTunes on another laptop, but I can't seem to be able to download all the pictures that I have on my iPhone to the new laptop. I'm assuming that the music I have loaded will be lost (which is OK) as I don't think they allow you to download .mp3 files (or whatever they store on the iPhone) to a PC - only the other way....PC to iPhone. I forgot my headphones when I went out last night and

remembered the ear buds in the glove box. Wow, what a difference they made. I usually run my volume on my SE at ten and have the Sun Ray and the Rats turned all the

way up to max volume. And my threshold on the Sun Rays I run at 7 and on the Rats 8 (which is why I always use my Sun Rays) Well with the ear buds I had to actually

turn my volume down on my SE for the very first time since the day I bought it:surprised:. Instead of 10 for volume I only had to run at 6, and my threshold was perfectly

audible at 6 and 7-(when the trains went by). That is a huge difference. Down side is: the little crappy wire is going to short probably soon, every time you stand up after

digging the target you step on it, the wire isn't very long, and the buds them selves keep coming out of my ears because I pulled on the wire by accident. I think most of

these problems could be resolved with alligator clips.:detecting:

I see it similar to a musician's ear training program where different chords are played and it's the person being ear trained task to identify if the chord is major or minor, diminished augmented, a 7th, 9th 11, etc. The identification gets more and more difficult as one progress as similar sounding chords require improved ear discrimination. Might be tought to tell a penny from a dime.. In a sense it would be a 'game' that allowed you to be tested on what you had learned from the CD. Erik could probably write the program for that. Musika Pracktica is one that a local community college used for their jazz musicians.

More important than visual, audio is indeed king. I would think a good set of ears is the most important part of metal detecting that people overlook.

I was wondering if people who are not able to hear as well as others should not expect too much when metal detecting.

A friend of mine is older and his hearing is not as good as it once was. He was in Vietnam and his hearing is pretty bad. He just started metal detecting this year. The slight sound variations and are impossible for him to hear. Even with an E-trac, he cannot hear some of the sounds. So he misses some good targets. Yeah, we can adjust the E-trac to fit him better when it comes to sound, but he still has a hard time. Even with his hearing aid....most sounds are really tough for him.

I find it amazing that he cannot hear some of the sounds that I hear so well.

Might it be wise to advise anyone who has a hard time hearing to find another hobby?
Audio Trends (1 reply)

I know that different machines tend to have trends in the way they sound certain signals/targets. I am wondering if it would be useful to post some of the machine respective trends here? I will give an example of what I mean. I used to have an Explorer 2 and I noticed that a good 90% of the time it would double bump the attack of a gumwrapper or foil signal. I did not have the Explorer 2 long and I am not by a long shot any good with it...but I am wondering if that doublebump attack is a noticeable trend with that machine?

Another one of interest: On excalibur, three anomaly signals tend to give an increase and sudden drop in pitch during the sustain. Thus when it makes that particular sound it is usually a cellphone, a matchbox car and possibly a watch. Most of the time it is a matchbox car. On the ear training CD there was an example of an anomaly signal that displayed this sound and it was a Treo Cellphone.

So again I am curious if there are trends you have noticed with your respective machines?

HH

Ear Training for the Excalibur.... (4 replies)

Just received that CD from Kellyco today. I have listened to part of it. If you want the conceptual tools to analyze any sound you hear from any detector, that CD will provide it. Yeah! It's specifically written/produced for the Excalibur but the way sound is broken down and explained can be used in any detector application. To me, deciphering those sounds I hear using the knowlege provided in this CD is equally as important as Andy's book is for the Explorer and the E-Trac.
Ear training is nothing new. (It is new to the detector world) Colleges teaching music have classes that are totally created to teach 'Ear Training.' It's so important to musicians that it is now taught complete with text and powerful CDs with which to practice. Several years ago it was thought you either had a good ear or you didn't. A lot of talented musicians can't read a score to save their lives. But, they can play with any group or Orchestra. One that comes to mind is Chet Atkins. Saw him play with some philharmonic group and I know he can't read.
The people in the music education community learned this and now teach it. Just like mathematics has symbols and numbers that help the student calcualte what needs to be done to solve the problem, there are similar concepts in sound analysis, if you learn them, that will give you the tools to be a better discriminator than the discriminator built into your detector. There are things such as attack pitch, sustain, release and a lot more. In math most know what "+", "-" etc. mean and how to decipher what to do. If you know what attack, sustain, etc, mean and where they enter into the sound you hear from the detector you can decipher more clearly what the detector is telling you.
If you want to you can dig 1000 holes an maybe learn to associate a particular sound to a particular object, but if you want to go a different route and expedite your ability to discriminate your detectors sounds, get this CD and study it as hard as you did Andy's book.
Nope! I dont' work for the creator of this CD. I didn't know his name until I saw it on the CD. If you were my best detcting friend, I would insist you get that CD and study it. That's the best endorsement I can give. Regards...Jim

I've always enjoyed the tones on the Explorer, but after reading about the long tones on the E-trac, I thought about where I'd find such information on the Explorer. A short play around had me changing the setting from normal tones, to audio 2. I had played around with audio 1 which gives a continuous tone as the coil passes over a target. In audio 2 is partially filtered and audio 3, the tone is filtered even more. I found that audio 2 gave the best response to coins v other targets. They seem to give a nice even flat tone, but can change in tone as the last part of the coil passes over it, but if it does, it is still a distinct coin tone. With a target like a screw cap, if you move the coil slowly past the target, as the centre of the coil passes over it, you can hear a distinct dip in the middle of the tone, as if you are hearing the target in 3D. Pull tabs also have they're very own distinct sound that makes it very easy to hear what it is.
I'd love to get out some more with the Explorer, but have been held back due to family commitments. Hopefully next week end will be good and I can learn some more about this feature as it's just blown me away with it's effectiveness.
I almost forgot to mention; I found that turning fast on seems to help fine tune the sound so as to make it easier to distinguish targets.
It would be interesting to hear what others have discovered with this feature.
Mick Evans.

Please check out the thread "Experience the best teacher" created by drwhou02 on the E-Trac forum for a very interesting beginning discussion of this topic. There are several individuals there with some interesting insight into the topic. I'm hoping that Guvner will copy the thread over here and we can continue the various discussions and brainstorming along these lines. With rapid improvements in hardware and software, advanced DSP (digital signal processing) enabling the better identification of targets is the future of detecting....and not necessarily the distant future.

I welcome any members to join in this discussion (pro or con) with facts, ideas, and interesting debate.

I have noticed moderators have closed posts and banned debators who bring up such a request.
If these people are happy with their place of growth and understanding thats great but please please move out of the way for those who want to further their education!
My main reason I am here is for learning, I want to master my machine like Cain in KUNGFU :>)
For those narrow minded people who say sound cannot be taught with sound ..are you people for real?????
The very people who say this have taught themselves to hear repeatable sounds from their very own machines.
So please explain to me what the difference is hearing a accurate CD example vs your machine?
Maybe its the candy in the hole at the end of each good tone these people need for reinforcement?
All I know to sum things up we need every tool available to our disposal to suck each and every good target from the earth then I will be satisfied knowing our tool box was full !
