I was looking at a older plat map from 1922 and i noticed there are black squares on some of the parcels which I would normally assume would be where a house sat but, I also noticed the same black squares with the word res next to the little black square which I am assuming means residence. I am wondering if the black square without the word res. are something else maybe like a out building. Do you think they are all houses? Thanks for the help guys.

My Methodology for Google Earth sites (8 replies)

I would like to post my methodology for using Google Earth as I travel, to find old sites to metal detect.

It all starts with research. I am not going to touch on use of the internet, topo maps, etc. You get your information as you choose. What I am talking about however is the layout I use on Google Earth, to what I believe is an optimum methodology. I have developed this method and hopefully, it will make sense to some of you, and perhaps be useful in how you approach using Google Earth to plan metal detecting trips.
Google Earth uses those push pins to mark locations..what a great tool. As you can see in the images below, I use those push pins with different icon/colors, to represent sites on Google Earth and Google Maps.
Following are my combinations (Shown in images 1 and 2):

Red G is for Ghost Towns ( I always list the date of the towns settling if known)

Green C is for Churches and Tablernacles ( I will denote a tabernacle)

Red S is for Schools

White Baloon with Black Diamond is a Cemetery, and if there is a tabernacle, I will denote that.

Purple X is for River Crossings

The Blue Wave is for a water Springs. I have been thinking of a Blue Teardrop with a W for Water

The Brown Military Looking character is for Fort or Camp

A Yellow Diamond is an individual homesite taken from a Topo Map usually, and I dont list any info on the title.

The Wrench I use for a site that I am narrowing down information and I am showing myself it is not complete, is sparse, needs further research, etc.

OK those are my symbols. You can use whatever ones you choose. I like to have order on my map. And this is the method of seeing visually where things are.

Location Location Location!

Next, I will Describe how I keep the information..

Lets say I find a Ghost town on a Topo Map, and determine its location on Google Earth. I have my preferences on Google Earth set to Decimal format on the GPS. I place a Push pin from the Google Earth menu on the map, and Voila!, a Placemark box pops up, as shown below in the 3rd image.

As long as that Placemark box is showing, you can move the push pin around, and edit information related to the pushpin. As you move it around, the Lat/Lon will change, relative to the very tip of the teardrop pushpin. I select the appropriate pushpin based upon my Criteria cited above (Ghost town, spring, church, etc). In this case, a Red Tear Drop with the Letter G inside, standard issue. And I move it to the location I have determined is the correct one for the site I am wanting.

Next, in the Name box, I type the name of the ghost town, and the date if known of its founding. This information will display on Google Earth.

Directly below the Name Box, the Latitude and Longitude show. This will change as you move the Push pin around. In this case, I am using Trickham Texas, with the coordinates of 31.587765°
-99.230986° I copy each of these and place them in the lowest block shown under Description Tab.

Next, after hitting return on the keyboard, I place researched information from a source in the box. Along with a Citation of the source, in case I ever need to find out more about it. You can also link to photos, but for now, I am not going to address that.

You see on the tabs the following:
Description Style, Color View Altitude

I want to address Style, Color Tab.

Lets say you place a church pushpin on the screen. The teardrop with a C in it is Red. If you go to Style, Color Tab, you will note there are choices marked:
Label
Icon

If you choose one of them, say label, you can click the box next to color and choose whatever color you want for your labels. I use Yellow, because it contrasts nicely with the Google Earth Display.
You can also adjust the size of your lable text here.

Below the label you will see "Color" and a box. I select that, in this instance and select green to replace the Red color in the teardrop. You can change the color at will. Opacity on both, I leave to 100%.

I click OK, and there you have it. The push pin with a C is on the screen. IF I need to change it or move it, I right click on the icon and the Edit Placemark Box reappears. Simple.

I would advise that as you create your own icons, that you create a corresponding folder under places (Using Right Click and New Folder). I have mine divided by Counties in Texas. Doing so, allows me to switch on or off each countys worth of icons and will allow me to keep my screen uncluttered, if I need to.

Beyond that, I also send my places to a private version of my places in Google Maps. Doing so, will place the icons, without the labels. This allows for a whole state view of icons with Gs Cs.Ss, etc. That way if I know where I am headed, I can determine nearby places.

I also send my Google Earth as an email with my icons, labels, and information boxes, to my IPhone, where I can examine them at will, or see nearby places wherever I am.
My methodology works for me, and I know from experience that being armed with information in a timely manner will assist me (and YOU) in finding places that most never get to see.
I hope this information is of use to some of you . If not, then disregard. It is meant to show my method of being organized with Google Earth. I have several hundred push pins representing Ghost Towns, Old Schools, Old Tabernacles and Churches, etc. That I can keep for my use, and determine to visit at need. If I may be of assistance in clarifying any part of what I am sharing, just ask.

HH,

Dennis Wynne, Gitterdug

I studded my mountain bike tires with 3/8" pan-head sheet metal screws from the inside of the tires, used half of an old inner tube to act as a liner and they work pretty good (just don't turn sharply!). The visibility into the woods is awesome and if there are old foundations or man-made structures there, you'll see them. Dress like you're going skiing and you won't be cold. I use layers of polyester clothing from the thrift store and a Gore-Tex shell on the legs and upper body and a fleece balakava.
I take my GPS unit with me and record the coordinates of potential sites.
Sanborn Maps for FREE (2 replies)

Since the ground is frozen here in Indiana, I decided to finally try to track down the Sanborn maps for my
area. I researched the internet, libraries, county offices, and surveyor's. Nobody had any for the 1800's. I
then gave my local Historical Society a call. Guess what? They have the Sanborn maps from 1874 for the entire
county. Every township! I'm meeting the Historian there tomorrow so that I can take pictures of the maps, download
them into my PC, and then overlay them on Google maps.

I thought this might be a great help to those who are having a hard time finding them.

HH
GateKeeper
