An important difference between a VLF and a PI (no replies)

One of the reasons I add experiments is so a person can personally experience first hand just what can happen to a signal from an object. Just asking me what happens and then trying to remember often doesn't have the same results as a new operator experiencing something themselves.

Now, if you have tried some of my experiments, you will have noticed that some objects disappear or appear to disappear as the delay is advanced. Is this lack of detection the same as the discrimination feature on a VLF? NOPE!!!! The action is totally different.

On a VLF, you can have a piece of foil on the surface and a coin buried deeply below that foil and have the foil cause the coin to be ignored. This will happen whether you have the disc set to detect or ignore the foil.

On a PI, something totally different happens. If the delay is set at a point where the signal from fast decaying signals is gone, then there is no masking or hiding signals below. The reason is simple, the signal from the fast decaying object is gone and not influencing any other signals present.

So, in simple terms, on a PI you can really see through some targets and those targets have little to no influence on the results. On other targets, you may have an influence but that is because the object causes a distortion in the coil's magnetic field. This distortion could cause a reduction or enhancement of the target signal that is still there.

Next, PI signals are not distorted nearly as much as those on a VLF. In really bad ground, deep objects may respond as trash because the ground influences the signal's Target ID and the disc feature. The result is a deep good target can often read as junk.

On a PI, this distortion of signals doesn't exist or if it does, is much less noticeable. What might be seen is the signal on a PI isn't linear, meaning the signal from a target may appear to change with the depth of the target. So, you may get some results you can't explain. Unfortunately, I haven't found a way to correct for these changes. What this means is with just the right GB setting, an object may be ignored at one depth but heard at a different depth. This usually happens when an object is right at the setting of the GB where it is changing tones.

I point this out because there will always be strange things you will notice that don't make much sense. The more you learn about the TDI , the less confusing such signals will become. So, the key to getting the most out of your PI is practice and learning. There are no easy shortcuts. Worse yet, when you first start out, it is very easy to come to the wrong conclusions. This slows down the learning curve because a person has to learn where they took a wrong turn before they can learn what is right.

Reg

TDI Signal Chart (14 replies)

I have never seen a chart that tries to explain how signals change as the GB control is changed. Now, for the record have you ever given the thought as to how to do this that makes sense. Well, I did and it isn't easy but I hope once a person better understands this chart, the more sense it will make.

Once you better understand the chart the more it will make sense. For example, if you look at the ground signal line, you notice it crosses the 0 line at less than 9 on the chart. At this location, the ground signal is minimal so there is little to no ground response. As you move away from the crossover setting on the GB, you will notice the signal from the ground gets stronger. Move towards a lower GB number and the GB signal becomes a high tone. The strength of this tone increases as you move away from the balance or crossover point.

Move to the right or a higher GB number and this ground signal becomes a low tone. The farther to the right and the ground signal becomes stronger.

This same technique holds true for all signals from metal objects also. This means that if you set the GB low when looking for silver coins, the signal will be weaker than it would be if the GB was set at maximum.

So, in simple terms, any high tone will become higher and louder as the GB is moved to the left and any low tone will become lower and louder as the GB is moved to a higher number.

Let me know if this graph makes sense.

Reg

High Low signals with the GB off (3 replies)

Hi,

I was just asked a question as to why a different PI detector has the high low signals when the GB is selected off and whether the GB is really off. This was mentioned because the TDI does not have different tones once the GB is selected off.

Well, I can't answer just how the other detector works, but the idea of having the different tones with the GB selected off is interesting and possible. So, my guess is the GB is off as far as part of the circuitry is concerned. Obviously, new and different ideas can be thought of once a detector is already being produced and people have time to think about it.

In this case, I explained that the signals created all go though the GB system if different tones are to be generated. After all, it is because of the GB concept that this tone change from low high to high low or in the case of the TDI, the high to low tone change happens. However, in the case of this other detector, the GB is shut off on the volume portion but still there to create the different tones.

Now, with that said, can the same thing be done with the TDI? The short answer is yes. Why? Well, the signals that create the tone do separate from those that produce the variations in volume. In fact, the tones follow the GB signals, while the volume sort of rectifies the signals to produce the increase in signal strength we hear as a loudness variation.

Unfortunately, the separation of the two signals doesn't occur early in the circuitry so separating the two isn't exactly something that could be done easily, but it could be done on the TDI. What makes this interesting is I have been working on a project that modifies the TDI and sort of got bogged down with certain existing circuitry that I never really liked to begin with. So, I tried a couple of things that worked very well. In the process, the new potential circuitry would be extremely easy to separate the tone signal from the volume signal. This could be done and simplify the design at that same time.

Now, on the down side, it isn't something that could be easily done to an existing machine without some serious thought process.

Now, one other problem with my thinking along these lines is I can easily get sidetracked. For example, lets say we create two GB type signals with one set with the GB at normal, but the tone adjustable, much like adjusting the GB now. The result might be much stronger signals or at least the potential to alter the gain of signals while independently changing when the tone change occurs.

All of this may sound great but if a person thinks about all the possible combinations, suddenly new and different problems begin to appear. I will let you think abou this for a while.

Reg

It will be my relic machine for my old farm sites where I hunt for CW relics. So far it is pretty intimidating and I can see me doing quite a bit more digging than I have in the past. As I am able I will go back through this forum and read all I can about it. I guess I better start with getting a good ground balance...and go from there. Here goes nothin!

LittleJohn

(Not the folded 8 RB).
I'm looking to add a smaller elliptical for my TDI SL for prospecting in the California Gold Country and don't know which one to get. I've heard that White's may be better quality and/or "tuned" (whatever that means) to the machine, but I also own one RB coil (10x14 Mono) which goes very deep and is very light. All comments appreciated. Thank you!!!

For most of my detectors I like having a lower rod mounted on the coils. And for hip or chest mount units I do not mind having a fully mounted extra rod set.

The standard White's lower rod is P/N 500-0242-1 which retails for $14.95
[attachment 264090 000.jpg]

White's also makes a "Tall Man" lower rod that is 10" longer than the standard lower rod P/N 500-0242-3 which retails for $19.95

Both these rods come without the 3/8" search coil hardware plastic nut, bolt and washers P/N 802-5096-11 which retails for $1.50. This is a good item to have around regardless.

Finally, there is the Space Saver Rod Kit P/N 802-5236 for $39.95. This three piece rod set is a ridiculous bargain - similar rod sets sold by other manufacturers cost much more, and every lower rod made by the other guys will plug into one of these. Even if the holes do not match up the twist lock alone does the job. Again, you need the bolt/nut/washer set for this also.

You can get all this and more online at http://whiteselectronics.com/products/accessories/replacementparts.html or at your local White's dealer.

Steve Herschbach

First gold with the TDI SL (10 replies)

Last month I made the jump up to a TDI SL (from a Spectrum V). I really like this little machine. My first few outings were to a gold panning recreation site where it's been reported that people have found the occasional nugget. No such luck for me! I've been hauling around a 5gal bucket that I empty the day's junk into, and although I should really throw it in the garbage, it's comforting to look at it as the successful finds of the new MD despite the contents being next to worthless. Although I am a newbie to MD'ing in general, I spent weeks researching pulse induction units and how they work, and reviews of the TDI SL before pulling the trigger. I like that the SL doesn't have a display- I prefer a machine that doesn't let me fool myself into thinking what I'm doing is easy or takes the place of critical thinking. Some of the more expensive units have all kinds of reporting options, and while nice to look at, deep down I'd be afraid I'd grow too reliant on the machine itself. I've been digging everything, and trying to listen closely to the different sounds/shapes/distances of the objects I'm detecting. I'm getting better, and this is mainly due to real MD veterans on this board and others very generously sharing information and helpful tips. I thank you all!

I ventured away from the beaten path on the Rogue River here in Oregon, and detected over exposed bedrock. I really expected to find some nuggets in these places but there were none to be had. I did find fishing hooks, lures, and lead weights though, so I knew if there was gold at the same depth I'd be finding it. The targets were varied, and usually very strong- only a few inches down usually. I've been trying to listen for the fainter targets, but that is a whole separate challenge. Towards the end of the day, I ventured away from the exposed bedrock and back to the bank, to begin my slow detector-wag back to the bucket. Near an exposed root system I picked up some solid signals (low-conductive). The first was a clutter of iron. The second was gold. When I pulled out a gold nugget, it initially felt and looked like another sinker. Closer examination brought a smile on my face. The SL kept going off in the same place- altogether I pulled five nuggets out of the same 4 sq.in. area. I was still getting signals after that, but it was getting dark and I had a long drive ahead of me, so I packed it up.

<div id="div_0cd213fb44a3476acb1168f7d168f635"

A Tip to get more depth.... (4 replies)

I recently figured something out while using my TDI Pro. Up until November, I was using my stock coil and would run my gain between 5-7 with timing between 10-15 respectively depending on location. I recently switched to a Razorback 14" mono. On my first couple of hunts I noticed I had to set my gain between 3-5 and at a recent hunt I would get a lot of false signals as I hit soy bean and corn stalks. It was driving me crazy! Thinking it was a bad coil, I started to work my way back to the car to change back to the stock coil when I noticed the coil wire "wiggled" ever so slightly when I hit a soy bean stalk.

So I loosened the coil wire and wiggled it, as I did, the coil was picking up the signal from the wire. Normally I would run the coil wire about 8 inches or so up the lower shaft and then coil the wire around the shaft up to the control unit. Turns out the TDI is to sensative for this (especially with the 14" mono Razorback). So I ran the wire straight up the lower shaft 18 inches and then wrapped it around the shaft to the control box. The result? I was able to run my gain at 9-10 with timing at 10! What a HUGE DIFFERENCE!!!

Hope this helps, as I was able to really get some deeeeeeep relics once I made this simple adjustment.

Good luck and happy hunting!

Joe

Ok...now I have some questions.... (7 replies)

I'm really trying to get a handle on the overload tone. In the high conductor audio mode, the audio pitch (to my ears) maxes out and sounds the same as the overload tone. For all practical purposes, once the low tone audio pitch maxes out, I'm in overload. So I've done some bench testing on where I hit overload. I was supprised to see it move around, distance wise, as settings change, and not just with Gain settings either.

Ground Balance settings had an effect on overload distances.

I had the Gain set at 6, Pulse Delay at 10ms, Threshold at noon (just below threshold) and Conductivity set to ALL. Coil used in the test was the 7.5" DF (just because that was the coil I used last and it was still on the machine).

Using a quarter I got these numbers as I adjusted the ground balance (GB).
GB at 11 = overload at 4.5"
GB at 6 = overload at 3"
GB at 1 = overload at 2.5"

Same settings but using a 3-1/2" long rusty nail:
GB at 11 = overload at 4"
GB at 6 = overload at 3.5"
GB at 1 = tone change, maxed out high tone pitch at 3", with the low tone overload tone occuring at 1" from the coil.

So based upon what I heard with the GB setting at 1, the real overload doesn't occur until around the 1" mark but since the high conductor low tone audio pitch is the same you can't tell it once the pitch is maxed out. I really wish the overload tone was a different tonal frequency so I could hear true overload.

Did some more bench tests with variable Gain and Ground Balance settings:
Pulse delay at 10ms, threshold at 12:00, Conductivity on All.

Using a quarter, GB setting at 8.5:
Gain at 2 = Overload at 3"
Gain at 6 = Overload at 4"
Gain at 9 = Overload at 4"
Gain at 12 = Overload at 4.5"

Using a quarter, GB setting at 2:
Gain at 2 = Overload at 2"
Gain at 6 = Overload at 3"
Gain at 9 = Overload at 3.5"
Gain at 12 = Overload at 3.5"

Using a 3-1/2" long rusty nail, GB at 8.5:
Gain at 2 = Overload at 3"
Gain at 6 = Overload at 4"
Gain at 9 = Overload at 4.75"
Gain at 12 = Overload at 5"

Using a 3-1/2" long rusty nail, GB at 2
Gain at 2 = Tone change, max high tone pitch at 2", low tone overload at 1"
Gain at 6 = Tone change, max high tone pitch at 3", low tone overload at 1.25"
Gain at 9 = Tone change, max high tone pitch at 3.5", low tone overload at 1.25"
Gain at 12 = Tone change, max high tone pitch at 3.5", low tone overload at 1.5"

So you can see that true overload is easy to hear for low conductors. There is no missing that maxed out low tone pitch when hunting with low conductor audio. But when switched to high conductors, once the the low tone pitch maxes out, I can't tell that the true overload is at 1" from the coil because I'm hearing the overload tone between 3" and 5" away from the coil based upon settings.

Kind of confusing when hunting cause I'm never sure if I'm hearing a shallow high conductor, or if I'm hearing the overload and so I spend more time raising the coil just to see if I get a weaker pitch or silence. How do you guys deal with this? Or do you even see it as a problem?

Next question :)

Remember I'm wet behind the ear about PI detectors.

So I've always read that PI detectors were inherently more stable in high minerals. That pulse induction didn't see minerals like VLF IB detectors did. But in PI mode my minerals made the TDI scream when the coil was lowered toward the ground, and my negative hot rocks gave tonal resonses simular to high conductive targets.

Now adjusting the pulse delay made a difference in the scream, and just turning on the GB switch (GB set at 11) silenced the negative hot rocks to a great degree. But what is the best way to adjust to the ground? Is it better to get some silence to the ground with the pulse delay first and then switch on GB and balance out what ever remains? If I just switch to GB and balance out the ground, am I loosing any performance by not adjusting the pulse delay in regards to the gorund minerals?

Guess I'd better stop there:truce:
Thanks in advance for the responses to my questions.
HH
Mike

My first real outing with the TDI (3 replies)

I had read the manual a few times, watched a DVD a couple of times, did some bench testing, but had not yet gotten to spend any time actually hunting it. Finally, this Sunday morning I got a chance to take it out and actually use it in the environment that I bought it for, mineralized sand playgrounds that are part of my gold jewelry sites. I used the 7.5 dual field coil thinking I could get closer to the larger metal that is present in playgrounds, but soon learned that I wouldnt be able to use it as close to the metal poles. It overloaded while still a good distance away.

I turned the GEB toggle on, gain at 3:00 o:clock, pulse delay at the minimum 10ms setting, and the conductivity switch on All. Ground balanced at 8-1/2. Ground balancing was like any other ground balancing I do. Non-event. Then set the frequecy for stable threshold for my gain setting. Still need to workout the best gain to ground mineral settings.

I didnt like running the threshold high with low headphone volume so I decided run it silent with a higher headphone volume. It ran quiet over the sand. First thing I noticed was that the TDI is very sensitive to small ferrous targets. Most of the time my good low conductor squeals were objects that my sand scoop just couldnt capture without a lot of effort. These turned out to be tiny wires pieces, staples, brads, etc. Occasionally Id get a good non-ferrous low conductor and after a bit of time figured out how to skip the small ferrous by comparing the carry. The tiny ferrous trash would squeal on the surface but wouldnt carry very far when I lifted the coil, where as the non-ferrous objects might squeal on the surface but would still carry the audio pretty good when I lifted the coil. I learned that the high tones that didnt squeal were more likely to be deeper non-ferrous targets and I always made an effort to recover those.

I also learned that targets with a bend in them like bobby pins and paperclips would still carry pretty good. I chased quite a few bobby pins around. Im not concerned about the bobby pins right now as Im pretty happy to figure out how to quit chasing staples.

High conductive targets often turned out to be rusty nails, though sometimes I got a surprise and found a penny or a quarter. I was pleased that while ground balanced I didnt have any trouble with my minerals, however, with GEB off, it was different story.

After spending a couple of hours in GEB mode, I also hunted in regular PI mod (GEB toggle OFF) and found that I enjoyed it, too. The ground was pretty reactive so I ended up hunted with the coil about 5 to 6 off the ground. This also kept the tiny ferrous trash out of the picture.

After the first hour I was pretty pleased with how it was coming along and was enjoying myself. The TDI swung decently. I just let it hang off my arm and directed it with my hand resting on top of the handle.

When my time was nearly up I moved over into the little grassy play ground, and changed my gb setting to 2, maxed out the pulse delay and put the conductive switch on high conductors and swept for coins on the way to my truck. First response was a zinc penny down about 2 inches. Second response was a nail down about 3, and my last response was in a real trashy sideline area that was totally silent with the TDI that turned out to be a coin spill; three zincs, 2 nickels, 1 quarter and three dimes.

Didnt walk away with any gold or silver this go around but I recovered several good targets that had been there a while, which means both I and the competition have missed them repeatedly on our previous hunts. I got a good feel for the TDI. I hope to be able to make adjustments that will allow me to skip the tiny ferrous and still keep the small non-ferrous objects, and figure out the nails. But I think the key thing to do at this point is to wire a bigger magnet in my scoop and reduce the size of the holes so I can recover the small stuff, ferrous or non-ferrous quicker, as Im really after the very small non-ferrous objects. Ill keep at it for awhile before I make up my mind as to its usefulness to me for what I hunt for where I hunt for it.

HH
Mike

Need Purchasing Help Please! (4 replies)

Hi Guys,

I have been thinking about getting my first pulse detector. I have been detecting about 4-5 days a weeks for the past 8 years and have owned a lot of different detectors. Thing is, I have never owned, nor even tried a pulse detector.

To give some info, I hunt primarily for coins and jewelry and I hunt primarily in wide open parks, fields and beaches. I have been thinking about a pulse machine to get some more depth than my CTX 3030 can achieve. My plan is to clean up the top 8-10 inches of an area with the CTX and then go over it again with a pulse detector and get the deep stuff. I have been pointed towards the TDI by several people I know and trust when it comes to pulse detecting.

I can't decide, however, if I should get the TDI Pro or the SL. I like that the SL is lightweight but I like that the Pro is apparently deeper and I like the fine and course adjustments on the Pro.

One thing I can't seem to get a solid answer on is, what exactly are the differences in performance between the two machines? Is the SL very noticeably less capable?

I was told today that the Pro has very noticeable better performance than the SL, but from what I have read about the two, the performance shouldn't be all that different.

If it were your money, which would you get and why? I would really appreciate input with this as I am hoping to make a purchase within the next week and for the life of me can't figure out which one to get.

Thanks in advance for any/all help, Marc

My TDI arrived today  (3 replies)

Now all I've got to do is figure it out. Bought it for jewelry and coin hunting along with some casual prospecting. I'm hoping it will detect smaller gold jewelry items in my black sand than my F5 or DFX will. From what I've read I don't think I'll have too much problem coin hunting with it.

Got a couple of extra coils with it besides just the 12 inch. A 3x6 razor back and the 7.5 DF.

Just need time to fool around with it now.

Look forward to me asking questions :)

HH
Mike

I do some prospecting but primarily cache hunting. I was not very happy with the ergonomics of the handle but also wanted to get rid of the aluminum rod since I was planning on using the 25" nugget finder coil seen on the picture.
I got a carbon fiber kit and handle and proceeded to change it out. Little work taking rivets out but over all easy mod.
Like the feel of it much better now .

G
