Between the 3.5 inches this week from thunderstorms and the non-stop rain here in upstate NY for the last 24 hours, not much detecting has been done. I managed an hour yesterday in the light rain at a nearby church yard. This thing rang up as 84-86 with a smooth tone. Hmm, quarter me thinks. Pulled it out of the plug, and still thought quarter. It wasn't until I got home that realized it was an all copper coin. After some hot peroxide and 0000 steel wool (yes, I know, but it is practically worthless and I wanted to see details), I saw that it was a two cent piece. Neat! The date is X86X. In addition to a couple of very old Wheaties, I managed to pull a 1964 Rosie.

HOWEVER, Rain, rain, go away; let me metal detect today.

aj

Question On Garrett Master Sound Headsets Supplied By Garrett??? (5 replies)

I have been using the Master Sound headsets for many many years, as Garrett often supplies them with a lot of their various metal detectors? They have always seemed to hold up well, had been water dunked with no consequences and have been repaired by myself a couple of times. Sometimes I wonder if I am missing out on some benefits of other brands. Some of the electronic stores have walls covered with different makes and models, some costing very little, while others in the hundreds of dollars.
So.........are you using your Master Sound headsets currently, or have you opted to use another brand? If so why? Were the new brands expensive? Large cuffs, small cuffs, duel volume controls? Were the other brands much better? What would you suggest?

Father's day is soon coming and my wifey wants some information.....

Late week, I took him into Austin to pic up his '64 Bug from the shop. When he got out, he forgot his keys to his casa and Camry's in the console, hence the trip over. Well, anyways since there is a nice big park there by the lake, I used the morning to give it a once over. Good grief!! I though I had hunted some trashy parks before, but the ATP and 5x8 coil sounded like machine gun fire!! So I weaved and bobbed and swung and dug, the best I could!! Here's the take for the 3 hrs. I spent.

Yes, those are washers, for playing Washers!! Those about blew my Grey Ghosts right off my head!! It's enamel on what appears to be copper, had a "D" on the back.

Not the best hunt I ever had, but it darned sure wasn't the worst. );

Hunted today with my buddy Scott. The ice flows have dissappeared, so we hunted a very cold lake today. The AT Gold did a great job! I used the true all metal mode with the iron audio set and 35 and turned on. When I got a signal, I would just peek at the VDI numbers and make my decision whether to dig or not based on the number(s). I hunted mostly the junky areas, and got most of the coins. That 5" x 8" coil really gets some surprising good depth. The Garrett Infinium LS (PI) worked well in the deeper water, and as usual, got another ring left behind, probably because it was about 10" deep. This water has been pounded to death with at least a dozen hunters. Yet, the Garrett's always seem to find some keepers missed by others.

<div id="div_fea5ebed880b14cc94a202eb28658b15"

Between studying maps and local histories I get worked up to test out these hunches. Took the ATPro with 5x8" for late day walk in the woods with plenty of water. The tree canopy helped keep the sun muted but this was our first humid day and you know the mix of sweat, deet and dust creates a funky paste. In the first 15 minutes I dug the '23 & '24 wheat backs. ten minutes later the 1910 V nickel turned up. Then the 1902 cent, good keepers kept sounding off sweetly on the ATP.<div id="div_c74d18360537a8b4063959e0fcc10014"

Lithium and O-rings (6 replies)

I just got my ATP last week and, so far, have been amazed. My first dig was a musket ball in a pretty well scoured area. I also got my first kepi buckle in a very well pounded area. Separation is amazing and it's so simple to use. The lack of bells and whistles makes digging so much more relaxing (I've got an E Trac, too).
I was wondering two things: can I use lithium batteries, and how can I replace the O-ring that seems to bunch up when pushing the coil cord into it's housing. I tried the search but must be doing something wrong, so I emailed Garrett about the batteries. This is what I got:

"Lithium Iron A non rechargeable form of lithium battery that has a nominal cell voltage of 1.5 volts. These can be found off the shelf in the AA size as Energizer L91 Ultimate Lithium. These are acceptable to use, however the battery performance spec shows only a 10% advantage over an alkaline battery when used in our detectors. They do have the advantage of operating down to minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit where alkaline batteries fall off below zero degrees Fahrenheit.
Lithium Ion This is a rechargeable version of the lithium battery. It is available in an AA size package, sometimes designated as the 14500 series. These batteries MUST NOT BE USED in the detector. They produce a voltage of 3.6 volts per cell and this voltage exceeds the limit of our circuitry. There is a high probability that a detector will be damaged if these batteries are used."

Not sure I agree with the statement about "only a 10% advantage over an alkaline battery..." and don't really know what "lithium iron" is. Anyways, I'll probably use the Energizer "advanced lithium" batteries I found a while back.

The O-ring issue wasn't really addressed to my satisfaction. The VERY nice gentleman that I spoke with said that I shouldn't really worry since there's further protection inside the machine, should water get passed the o-ring (at least that's what I gleaned from from the conversation). Is there a good place to get replacement rings, or a size that I can search for at the hardware store?

Thanks in advance. This forum has been very informational. I felt very prepared to dig before I even got the machine.

After working on the new house for the better part of the day, I snuck out for a rainy scan of my played-out honey hole. I got a sweet high tone, coupled with a lot of iron grunting and scratchy noise...but sweet from one angle. This is a junky part of my honey hole, and finding this 1946 Rosie in the hole with a huge nail really makes me love this 5x8 coil. I even found another smaller nail in the hole upon rechecking with the ProPointer! Hopefully there are even more good coins to find at this spot. In the past 3 seasons I have spent hundreds and hundreds of hours at this location...the 5x8 is proving its worth!

Went back Thursday last week and started swinging. Got a nice tone (85 VDI) in the dirt/grass driveway but it disappeared when swinging the other directions (90,180,270 degrees). Odd, but iron grunts made me think I was iron falsing. Then I noticed that I had dug it before; huh? Must have thought it was iron. For some reason, I removed the plug. The Pro Pointer showed nothing, but then this thing was on the ground next to the hole. I picked it up and thought it was a clad quarter; it had been only 2-3 inches under the ground. Well, long story, not so long, it's a 1942 Quarter. This one really fooled me. It looks like it's been buried in saltwater sand for ages. Well, here's to silver.

aj
