Find's Treasure Forums - Fisher Gold Bug/Teknetics G2 Forum

We have had a lot of request to set up a forum for the Gold Bug, and the Teknetics G2. We have decided to combine them together in one forum, because of the close similarity of those units.

The G2 Pulls Gold Military Pins From Super Trashy Site :teknetics: (6 replies)

I don't know how I found the first gold pin. I was passing up low VDI numbers left and right looking for silver coins. I was ignoring hundreds of the them. For some reason I decided to dig a bouncy 40 to 60 VDI number. It was loud and crisp. To my surprise, out pops a what I first thought was a gold pendant at around 4 to 5 inch deep (VDI number 44). I had the discrimination set at '39', so I lowered the discrimination to its minimum to search for a broken gold chain in the surrounding area. When I passed the coil over the plug that I had just dug, I got a '58' VDI reading. I couldn't find it with my ProPointer, so I started breaking up the plug and waving the pieces in front of the coil until I found it. It was a larger gold pin that wasn't quite as deep as the first one. It was just about an inch or so above the smaller gold pin. Finding gold always makes my day.

I also, found several tokens, a British New Penny, a dollar coin and some clad coins. Oh yeah, I was using the 11 inch DD coil.:detecting:

tabman

<div id="div_470e385208c0d5573fb30bbd16b974fd"

Ended up getting a used one offline and it is firmware version 3. Tested it out a little today and I can't tell the difference between the two versions. I know the 2.9 version is pretty different and there are a lot of posts about it. I'm just curious what Fisher changed from version 3 to version 4. Does anyone know or is it one of those mysterious upgrades that Fisher does without saying anything?

I went to a real trashy park that was dated around the early 1900's. Right off I dug a wheat penny, so I knew there had to be silver there as well. A bucket load of trash and a few hours later, I got a strong but bouncy 82/85 hit. I dug down around 4 inches out pops a 1937 Mercury Dime that was on a slight edge. Next time I'm taking the 5 inch or 10 inch DD coil. The 11 inch DD coil was a little too big for that trashy park. The two wheat pennies - 1940 & 1946

tabman

<div id="div_08da6800e63ebabb2cb5b9d1d1b8ee01"

Gold Bug 29'er Superior Performance (2 replies)

There have been a number of threads on this and other forums about the alleged superior performance of the Gold Bug 29'er. Those that have them claim that they're "deeper" than the current Gold Bug Pro V/4.0 model and say that they'll never give theirs up. Those with the so-called "silver fix" seem to be even more sought after. Of course I know that everyone has an opinion and that opinions on this subject may differ. My real question is this - is it worth picking one of these 2.9 models up if one becomes available?

BTW - I believe I read that Keith Southern has owned both the 2.9 and the 4.0 (don't know if he still does) and that he apparently prefers the current 4.0 model to the 29'er. Keith - please correct me if I'm wrong.

I had to pinpoint tighter ad then when I did hit the coin they were definatly at the end of my depth for my fingers to grab. Took a bit more work to get the coin tured but I kow that it definately hits deeper that any other detector i have right now. The ring I got yesterday was not very deep but rand cosistantly at the same number solidly.
Same with quarters and dimes.
And nickels defiatly are solid at 58 for me here...

I have no idea where to find the number. Can somebody give me a clue? They said they couldn't insure it without a number. Cracks me up that they are so clueless. They were mad that I hadn't given them the company name or model number on the Teknetics G2. Hmmm, it almost seems like I must have or they couldn't have used that in their heading to complain I hadn't given it to them.
Some silver and token (3 replies)

Today I took the G2 to a school/church grounds from the 1950's. The school bought up the church grounds and uses the old building for a nursery. Beside the usual clad I also found 3 silver coins, 1942 washington, 1942 mercury and 1944 roosevelt, 4 wheaties 1944-1958. The 1942 washington was about 7" deep, ran the G2 after I retrieved the quarter and she sounded off again with a number 84, dug down another 1" and the token came out. It's a Weingarten's grocery store token for $.10. Weingarten's was the grocery store everybody shopped at back in the 50's and 60's when I was growing up. Last week I found the silver ring at the soccer field. Here are some pics. I will be going back to the school/church grounds next week with the 5" coil, left lots of signals in the ground, they were too close together. HH John

April 14 relic hunt...unbelievable! (1 reply)

Went back to the same site i have relic hunted the past two weekends. Took my son again and also my hunting partner Rick from central Ky. The story of the day...deepest non-ferrous target I have ever dug with my G2 w/ Ultimate coil. I got a signal that I have heard before ...the softest whiper that could still be considered even a signal. Alternating from iron to non-ferrous numbers and again..barely a whisper. I called Rick over and said listen to this. He ran his Vaquero with 10" widescan coil over it, and got only a broken bit of a signal. I told him , I have dug this type of signal before, and it is usually a good deep target at the absolute limit of the machine. I dug...and dug...and dug and finally with my arm deep in the hole my pinpointer had arrived the target. I felt is HAD to be only iron at this depth, but it wasn't...it was ...a... shotgun shell hull! Yeah, I know big deal right? Junk target. Gentleman , that sucker was at the 14" mark! The handle of my Lesche digger was 2" below the top of the hole! Point is, it could have been a Union Staff button or a large coat size eagle button and I would have gotten it. Rick was blown away. Thank goodness, I had a witness to this as I know people won't believe it, but it's true. Rick said that he's seen enough and is getting a G2 with an Ultimate coil. All the other targets were from 7-9" down. Hope to post pics of the finds (mostly just bullets) later. Something to keep in mind, is that the soil in this spot is mild (GB's usually in the 57-63 range). Still, as I have said before, for relic hunting I have never found a better machine/coil combo....I am never getting rid of my G2! Happy hunting all!

G2 Ultimate 13'' coil (3 replies)

After waiting a month for a "in stock, ready to ship" coil for the G2, I finally got an answer. It wasnt in stock but on the way from Bulgria. When I asked for a delivery date, they got back to me and told me that they do have a shipment coming but not the Ultimate 13 coil. So I canceled the order. :(

I dont mind waiting if I know something is coming but when your told in stock ? I wish I could say I would order it else where, but they know I cant. So, I ordered a Platypus for my GPX instead from another vendor, and they did have it in stock.

GruntZipGrunt! (6 replies)

I know the GB Pro has a very fast recovery speed, but this evening, I found out just how fast it is. Was tired but bored after work, decided to wax and armorall my machine. I rarely flip it into discrim mode, but just for kicks, I decided to see how it'd do in an air test. Set gain to 100%, discrim to 40 and battery level was at the 2 bar mark with the 5" coil on.

Grabbed a rock that had some color in it (tested with 22k acid). The spot of color is approximately 5mm in length (see attached photo, rock still wet after washing off acid remnants). The ruler in the photo is graduated in millimeters. Swung slow just over the patch of rust and color, maybe about 2.5 to 3 feet/second. I really didn't expect much, but to my great surprise, GruntZipGrunt came thru my headphones!. Mind you, the "Zip" was very short, staccato-like, but crisp and clear. It was repeatable till I moved the coil about 1.5 inches away.

Most of you reading are probably coin/jewellery/relic hunters....but if your machine ever emits a short repeatable zip over a rock, consider applying a sledgehammer with extreme prejudice to the rock. There could be good stuff within! :detecting:

Some of the bullets were 4-6" down, but 1 was a measured 9" and the bayonet scabbard tip was a measured 12" down and even at that was a solid signal.
Mar 20 relic hunt with G2 and my son (7 replies)

Took my son with me this past weekend for a short relic hunt. My son is slowly warming to this hobby. Hit a site I have hunted for over 15 years. ALL the relics found ranged from 5" deep (the eagle button back) to 10" (one of the minies). The 10" deep minie was a really faint signal that again was alternating from low soft iron grunts to high tones with good 70 numbers. Also got one signal that was alternating iron and high tone...5" down a square nail, rechecked the hole...now high tones reading from 82 to 88...was real excited as that would be silver and being under the square nail at a Civil War site should be a seated coin....alas, was a 58 cal minie...I have NO IDEA why the minie read that high. I have NEVER had a bullet read up in the 80's....and yes, I checked the hole again. Anyways....love my G2 with Ultimate coil... best machine for me I have ever found!
