Finding Small Gold with The GPX (7 replies)

One big goal I have this summer is to better learn how to find small gold with my GPX 5000. I will admit that until now I simply did not care. When my brain said small gold, I grabbed my Gold Bug 2. When I grab my GPX, I shift to big nugget hunting. Fact is however that in mineralized ground the GPX is a very capable small gold detector and so I am going to put some major time into using the Minelab Commander 8" mono coil and Sensitive Extra timings to find the smallest gold I can this summer with my GPX. I even have a Coiltek 1" pinpointer to play with in deeper crevices. Should be a lot of fun - I like sniping for small gold.

<div id="div_ca3c3d88da7f2a730d8212e5ea68a666"

No reply was given. Can anyone give an answer?

"The 8 settings on the GPX5000 do they represent pulse delay? Coin & Relic being high delay time of say 50-60 usec and Fine Gold being low at around 10-15 usec? I only ask because I took my GPX on the beach for the first time and at last found a use for the Coin & Reliv mode as it wont GB on any of my soil inland. The setting worked wonders on the sand both wet and dry recovering coins at unbelievable depths but no gold, so I was wondering if the pulse delay is set at a high rate and therefore not suitable for gold rings?"

Of course the GPX 5000 is going to get a workout.

Jonathan Porter loaned me a Nugget Finder Advantage 18" round mono to use in Australia while I was there. I fell in love with that coil, so much so that he could not bear to take it back, and so it went home with me. Thanks JP! I found a few nuggets with it in Alaska last summer but did not have much time to use it. This summer that changes. I will be hunting both tailing piles and virgin ground and plan on pretty much leaving that coil on the detector. The only time it may come off is if I am searching shallow bedrock, in which case I will go to a small mono.

Steve with Nugget Finder 18" Mono in Australia - Photo courtesy of Jonathan Porter

Indisputably the worlds most powerful prospecting detector (2 replies)

That is it, plain and simple. People discuss detectors a lot, and often the discussion is over what is best. One thing however there is little argument over by the vast majority of professional prospectors who metal detect for gold. The ones who make a living at it. And that is the fact that the Minelab PI detector series revolutionized the prospecting world. I do not think anybody, even the most optimistic person at Minelab, could ever have foreseen the impact the detectors would end up having and the huge numbers of them that have sold and continue to sell. Not only is this true, but Minelab by virtue of a huge lead in development and key patents holds a virtual monopoly on the upper end of the market segment. No competitor seriously suggests they have anything that competes head to head with the GPX 5000.

Quite an achievement and something so taken for granted now it goes without saying. So I figured it was time to say it again. Congratulations to Bruce Candy and the other engineers at Minelab that over time have produced a metal detector that is truly one of a kind.

Steve Herschbach

Worth upgrading to GPX 5000 from 4500 for relics? (6 replies)

I was asked the following question by PM. Do not be shy people just post them here.

"I have a 4500. I'm in Scotland and use it for coin/relic hunting. Would the additional and different timings on the 5000 benefit my type of use? Is there an advantage in using the 5000 over the 4500 for my type of hunting?"

My response - no, having used both I do not think there is any reason to ditch a 4500 to get a 5000 for coin and relic hunting. In fact for most nugget detecting that I personally do my old 4500 would do me as well as my 5000. But when I spent a month in Australia I spent the majority of the time running the new Fine Gold setting on my 5000 and that alone made the upgrade worth it for me. I doubt intense ironstone is an issue in Scotland relic hunting so that is unlikely to be of any real help.

The new coin/relic setting sounds enticing, but it is for ground that has such low mineral content that I have not heard of anyone actually using it. Maybe for clean white sand Florida beaches? It is a timing I need to experiment with more than I have. Any comments regarding the Coin/Relic timing would be welcome. If you have ground where it could actually be used that setting alone may be worth the upgrade, but again, it only offers a benefit in extreme low mineral ground.

If buying new I would not hesitate to get a GPX 5000 but for most people running a GPX 4500 it is hard to justify the upgrade unless you are putting a lot of time on the unit and finding a lot of gold. Then the upgrade may have a shot at actually paying for itself. It is in my case also a psychological thing. I like the confidence I feel having a top-of-the-line unit in my hands. I never have that feeling of "if I only had a XYZ" and that does count for something.

Seriously considering a GPX 5000 (3 replies)

Hey everyone! Im really debating on purchasing a GPX 5000. I really need the depth advantage to detect those coins and relics in my area. There are a lot of detectorists that have lived in my area over the past 30 years or so. Most areas have been wiped clean near the surface. I have realized that most users own a cheaper detector (mostly bounty hunters or cheaper Whites units). I have went over the same ground with a more expensive unit (White's MXT Pro) and did pretty well! I have yet to find any silver or gold yet... Im really thinking that the depth advantage of the GPX 5000 would be sufficient in my area because the ground here is not that bad at all. Im also very interested in gold prospecting in the central Virginia area. I have attempted to use my old MXT Pro on that ground but the soil was hard to track although I was picking up pennies just below the surface. I think the PI advantage would help me find some gold.

Is there any possibility in continually trading top of the line detectors in on the next newest top of the line detector? I really think it would be cool to own the top of the line detector and be one of the first to test them out. If there's one thing I love, it's testing new detectors!

If any of you have any input here to help me decide, please let me know!

But since this forum looks about dead I will adopt it and do my best to help with any answers here in the future. I have used the Minelabs not just for nugget detecting but was one of the early proponents for using them for coins and relics. See Gold Nuggets and Coins with Minelab GP 3500 They are now getting quite popular for beach and relic use. I think that as good finds get harder with regular VLF detector people will lean more and more on PI detectors to get the stuff others are missing.

My summer plans revolve heavily around my GPX 5000 for some pure blue-sky patch hunting in Alaska. Can't wait to get out there and hit the hills!

PI? (1 reply)

I was hunting Sunday afternoon in one of my old school yards where in years past they dumped the coal waste from the furnaces. This material attracts to a magnet and can cause weird problems for a metal detector especially after a soaking rain. Well anyway I was hunting the area with my (None Whites machine) The machine was very noisy with ticks and clicks and sporadic high tones. After a while I decided to switch to monotone (one tone) and started digging anything that even started to repeat. I came across a very loud signal and knew it was close to the surface, but the VDI numbers were everywhere but mostly in the iron range. Switching over to 4 tone and the audio sounded like pure trash and I can say for sure I would not have dug this target in any setting other than monotone (actually reminds me of the Tesoro Tejon one tone detector) I Also know from experience how some ground conditions and co-located iron objects can cause the VDI to be very bouncy. So I decided to recover this target and at 1 deep, this 10k, dime size white gold ring (1.06g) came up. Out of the ground it read a solid 19 (which is 4 points higher than iron) but the numbers were not even close to that while it was in the ground. I suspect the coal cinders was the reason why the ID numbers were so bouncy and the audio was less than ideal even in monotone. Now with this information I need to re-hunt these school grounds again in monotone. Over the past 4 years we have hunted this area with 4 different Whites machines and a total of 9 other machines and have found none to be ideal for this ground. It is my firm belief that a high quality PI machine might (suspect) allow for the detection of many good targets that are masked in this ground. Any experience using a PI machine in areas like this?

I just had a minelab gp3000 given to me because the previous owner got a new device and said if I got a new battery for it i could have it. I purchased a brand new battery and have been charging it for about a full day with the minelab charger. The battery is reading about 5.78 volts on my multimeter. However when I hook everything up and turn the device on it makes a quick beep in the headphones and then in about 15 seconds it makes just a continuing sound. I have tried with two seperate coils and still happens. I have adjusted every knob and switch every possibly way. Any ideas of what I could have going on here???? HELP I WANT TO GET OUT THERE!!!! I have a short audio clip of the sound but I cannot upload it here. I would be glad to email it to anyone if you would like to private message me your email address. Minelabs owners manual said that the unit would make a sound if the battery was too low, im not sure if that is what the sound i have is and the battery is just taking a while to charge since it was brand new with no charge.
