Last Ghost Town Hunt Before Crops Planted (3 replies)

After a cold, wet Spring, we've had nearly a week of warm breezy weather and the fields are drying out. The farmer parked his tractor on the Ghost Town site and is ready to plant, so I got in one last hunt until the crops come out next Fall.

Started the hunt with the last of the junky areas with my Deep Tech Gold. Pulled out the broken spoon/fork hanle at the top. Next to it is a brass buckle with some silver plating on it. Found the four brass harmonica reed pieces, as well as the back of a coat button and an 1869 Shield nickle. The Deep Tech also pulled out the two small pistol balls.

I decided to hunt the perimeter areas outside of the town proper with my Blissoot with a 15" coil for maximum coverage. The area are pretty free of trash. Found eight Civil War bullets and the heavy brass round item with all the holes. No ideaa what it was used for.

Really enjoyed hunting the ghost town site since last Fall. Being only three miles from my house was a plus. Found 86 Civil War bullets and eight pre 1900 coins. Wnen it gets plowed next Fall, the junkey areas will be all new again.

Thanks for lookin' and keep on diggin'

jimmyk in Missouri

Hard to determine whether some of the finds are from the Civil War or not. Still fun to touch history. Found five bullets at the top. Below that is a suspender clip, a piece of harmonica reed, a flat piece of lead with a hole in it, and a .36 cal. rimfire, possibly from an Allen and Wheelock revolver. Three harness buckles and three coins. One totally corroded beyond recognition, one a 1918D wheat penny and an 1867 Shield nickle.

Thanks for lookin' and keep on diggin'

jimmyk in Missouri

The button was a heart-breaker but it was still pretty awesome finding it. It looks like it may have been in a fire or something. That makes my 4th confederate button! The hooks gave off a funny signal in the low 30s on the F75, I almost didn't dig it. It searched like crazy for the rest of the buckle, but no luck. Thanks for looking, HH!

Used the Blisstool with the large 15" coil to cover an open, fairly clean area past the church burned by the Southern partisans (we call them Bushwackers in Missouri) , A clean field would indicate I'm past the boundries of the old town. I'm finding shot bullets I assume were fired during the church burning. Found a total of five. I then went to the other end of the town by the crossroads where the hotel was located and worked a heavy trash area with the Deep Tech Vista Gold. Right near where the land owner told me a well was located I pulled an 1891 indian head penny from an area I had covered twice before with an F75 SE and the Blisstool with an 11" coil. The area was plowed between those two hunts. I also dug two piece of harmonica reed, part of an umbrella and a broken thimble. The area is littered with broken glass, china and crockery. I eyeballed a broken china arm from a china doll. A fun day of hunting in the 80 degree weather yesterday. Today it's in the 30's with a chance of one to three inches of snow.
Missouri Battlefield Hunt Finds (4 replies)

Hi, All:

Spent some time hunting a favorite spot. A Missouri battlefield on private property with land owners permission. Hunted three specific locations within the confines of the battle. An open area where fired relics have been found. Both bullets and shell frags. A known picket post,. And where the town hotel and stage coach stop were located, shortly after the war.

I used a Blisstool with a 15" coil for the field hunt, which netted me five shot bullets, a harness buckle with the faint outline of a heart in the center, and a wadded up piece of flat lead. The lead may be part of a sabot. There looks to be faint rifling marks. It was a full 10" deep and the Blisstool banged the signal out like it was on top of the ground.

The next spot was a junkey picket post I've previously found several drop bullets and pieces of cavalry spur. I only found a .54 cal. minie and a .69 cal. round ball. I was using a Deep Tech Vista Gold with it's extremely fast recovery speed to see if I could rescue a few more relics from the hard hit area.

Finally, I moved to where the hotel and stage socah stop wereonce located. It's now a feed lot for horses. The Deep Tech sounded like a machine gun with all the nails and junk it was searching through. Found lots of copper, tin and brass trash in the mix. Was able to pull the cavalry spur piece as well as an old Shield nickle,. It was in pretty good shape with a readable date of 1868. I've hunted this area several times before, but wanted to see what the Deep Tech would do. It worked well. This was the fourth Shield nickle recovered from the site, as well as an 1876 Quarter found there in the '80s.

Thanks for looking. Always fun to dig some more relics from hard hit areas.

jimmyk in Missouri

Trying to get all I can before the field gets planted. Found some interesting items, besides the eight Civil War bullets. A nice paper weight/log splitter was rescued. But, the best item was an 1829 dime. Unfortunately, it's in rough shape. The edges have been filed down on both sides to give it a knife edge effect all around. Still, a nice find. Especially, since the "Official Red Book" of coin values shows it to have what is called a "curl base 2". My edition is a 2005 book, so I don't know the current value, but my book says one in "good" condition is worth $4000. Granted, mine is far from "good", but still fun to find a really rare coin. Hard to take a picture to show it. I needed a magnifying glass to really determine what it was.Coin was picked out of a iron infested area where a brick church stood and was burned down during the war. My Deep Tech Vista Gold with it's fast response was able to pull it out. Am really liking this detector for junky sites.

Thanks for lookin' and keep on diggin'

jimmyk in Missouri

Last weekend I hunted a spot that has been productive for shot bullets in the past. I found a variety of bullets; .69 and .58 minies and assorted pistol bullets. I also found a Henry casing. In addition to all that jazz, I found a brass image of what appears to be Robert E. Lee?? It was originally silvered. I wonder if it was a button or tin lid? Instead of war period, I am guessing that it was dropped by someone in the crowd during Jefferson Davis' visit to this spot in 1875. Davis made a tour through Missouri during that time, and thousands gathered to see him at his stops, many decked out in Confederate paraphernalia. What do y'all think?

Also, I had another hunt last weekend that I posted on the CTX forum because I found a lot of bullets and misc. Ever since I started relic hunting in 1979 I've keept a running total of how many Civil War bullets I've dug. Going into yesterday's hunt my total stood at 8,999. I needed one more to hit the nine thousand mark. First bullet dug was the .36 cal. pistol ball in the center of the picture. The ten dug bullets from yesterday was the best one day total from the town site. I've moved into a more "open" area free of junk between the hotel and the chruch that was burned during the war. They are seperated by about four hundred yards.

I'm not setting a goal of ten thousand bullets because I'm 68 years old, with back problems that will eventually need surgery, but I'm putting it off as long as I can. Besides, the days of digging forty or fifty bullets in a day are pretty much gone, unless I can find an large, unhunted camp, which is rather doubtful. Especially, here in MIssouri. I'm happy I was able to hit the nine thousand mark.

Thanks for lookin' and keep on diggin'

jimmyk in Missouri

I found four total. I also found my first silvered Eagle I button. I can't make anything out on the copper. Those Confederates must have had a case of the nerves. Thanks for looking & HH:teknetics:

BUT I also found what looks like a 58
caliber Civil War bullet like the one in this quarters Garrett Searcher.
Check it out and tell me what you think. Maybe the configuration
of my find is just a coincidence?
Robert2300

Got a Hunt In Yesterday.......... (6 replies)

Got to hunt one of the big camps in our area. Got a little lead, love those big old .69's!! Found one of the biggest splats of camp lead I've ever found too, funny thing is, someone else had dug the hole and left it there. Got a good signal and cut the plug and out came the broken ginger beer bottle. The sheet brass was what got the signal. Here is a pic of how we find most of the buttons around here also......Mark
