Chuck E Cheese Token DONATIONS PLEASE (1 reply)

This is posted on Today's Finds Forum. I wanted to spread the word.

I just got off phone with Boys and Girls Club of Wayne County NC. I spoke with Mr. Marvin Ford at 919-735-2358. Boys & Girls Clubs of Wayne County

Administrative Office:
P.O. Box 774
Goldsboro, NC 27533
Phone: (919) 735-2358
Fax: (919) 735-2351

He said they would be very greatful for the donation as many of the children are from struggling families and have never been to Chuck E. Cheese.
I do wonder if the older tokens will work in the new machines. Regardless I think it would be a fantastic opportunity to highlight our hobby while providing children a chance to have an enjoyable time. How ever you feel comfortable with this is up to you. We can send them all individually(meaning per person not per token) to the address above or send them to me and I will deliver them as a large unit. I will gladly do it and post results on this forum. I will also message each person that donates. To verify I received the token(s) and provide total count. If you wish for a personal message include your username with the shipment. Please Personal Message me (click send message link by my username)for those wishing to send to my address. I would like to have this completed no later than 21 June

The park I would like to hunt will only allow diggers of the following description : " Tool used for probing must be similar to a screwdriver, with a blade length of no more than six (6) inches, width of no more than ˝ inch."

My preference would be a spoon-shaped tip and hardwood handle and to comply with the max six inch blade length, would mean the total length of the shank, from the tip of the spoon to the point where the shank enters the hardwood handle, would have to be six inches max..

I remember seeing a coin popper with spoon-shaped tip and hardwood handle being sold on the Internet and I believe it was of the custom-made variety (not high production.), but don't recall the name of the seller.

I didn't see anything close to the above description on the Garrett Hobby Division or Kellyco sites.

Can anyone direct me to a source ?

Thanks for your help !

ToddB64

Even though more than four million of them were minted, just over a dozen currently exist today in good condition. So where did they all go? The legend tells it that a shipment of dimes departed Denver, Colorado that same year for Phoenix, Arizona but never arrived. Treasure hunters believe that the wagon train tipped off the road and into Colorados deep, impassable Black Canyon. There were no survivors of the shipment, so nobody knows for sure, but if you

could get your hands on those barrels of silver youre talking a $3,000,000 payday.

He had found a lot of old homes to hunt close to where he lives. He doesn't like to ask so he just did a search online and found out who owned the homes. We searched 3 old homes and didn't have much luck and the last home we went to was owned by Richard Cordray who is the director of the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. My buddy said even if he's home fat chance of getting in there. It was a beautiful 1870s home with a big yard. There was a car in the drive so I told my buddy to just stay put and I'll show you how to sweet talk this guy. Sure enough he came to the door and agreed to let us hunt but wanted to see if we found anything interesting. It turns out I found half a dozen wheaties an 07 indianhead and an 03 barber dime. When we were ready to leave I showed him my coins and he said " do you want to keep all those" to which I replied yeah. He then asked me if he could have the dime and the indianhead and I couldn't refuse him. So even though I lost my best finds at least I have a great story to tell for it lol

Savage Family Diggers! (1 reply)

First of all it is a lot of work to put a show like this together. Someone is doing a lot of research in finding virgin places to metal detect within state and federal laws. And when they get there they have to knock on doors and sell themselves to homeowners. We know they go to places and its a total bust. The show is only a half hour long, its a lot of editing and of coarse, there is script writing. Rick Savage was a detectorist when he was younger. His wife is really behind the scenes but does a lot of research on places with Rick and the costs of the travel and dig expenses.

Rick Savage was actually a good wrestler and the show capitalizes on the hype with the "Boom Baby Boom" !
We can actually learn from the show. They actually do find some interesting artifacts.

Good Luck To All This Year In Finding Stuff.....
Stemp.

GOLD ..NOT GOOD (5 replies)

LONDON - Gold headed for its biggest two-day drop in 30 years on Monday as funds accelerated their exits from the market, and investors also cut exposure to oil, copper and grain after underwhelming Chinese growth data.

The precious metal slid further into bear territory, dropping more than $30 in a matter of minutes at one point. Losses widened to more than 6 percent at the lows as prices breached support at $1,400 per ounce after falling 5.3 percent on Friday.

Oil fared scarcely better, dropping by as much as nearly 3 percent. Other precious metals were caught in the downdraft, with silver briefly dropping 10 percent, and industrial metals plummeted, with copper hitting its lowest in over a year. In the grains market, wheat, corn and soybeans fell.

Both oil and gold have been under substantial selling pressure. Bullion has come off worst, shedding around 9.5 percent since last Monday's close, while crude has lost about 3.5 percent.

China's economy grew 7.7 percent in the first quarter, undershooting market expectations for an 8.0 percent expansion and frustrating investor hopes that the world's No. 2 economy would rebound after posting its weakest growth in 13 years in 2012.

"If you want to be worried about China, there's plenty to keep you awake at night," said Sean Corrigan, chief investment strategist at Diapason Commodities Management in Switzerland.

Gold was already under pressure from a variety of factors, including a proposed sale of Cypriot gold holdings, and more fund-based investors headed for the exits on Monday.

Spot gold hit a two-year low at $1,384.69 an ounce.

"We have seen massive liquidation from all quarters - ETFs, funds, CTAs, specs and even Chinese and Indian physical buyers. This is a market that has only got one thing on its mind ... get me out," said David Govett, head of precious metals at Marex Spectron in London.

Brent crude oil sank below $101 a barrel to a nine-month low and was threatening to break below $100 for the first time since early July. It was down about 15 percent from this year's peak of $119.17 reached in early February.

Prior to the latest Chinese and U.S. data, the International Energy Agency, the U.S. Energy Information Administration and the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries had already lowered their global oil demand growth for 2013.

China's weaker-than-forecast GDP growth was backed by slower increases in industrial production and fixed-asset investment, despite strong lending growth in March.

"There are questions about the trend of bottoming in China's economy and whether it can re-accelerate above 8 percent this year in a sustainable way," said Vishnu Varathan, market economist at Mizuho Corporate Bank in Singapore.

PANIC

In gold, "what we now see is panic selling, perhaps triggered by the Fed's stimulus view. The Fed has given the signal that there's a possibility to reduce QE (quantitative easing), and that took a lot of trust out of gold," said Dominic Schnider, an analyst at UBS Wealth Management.

"And people recognize that an environment where you have no inflation is a powerful driver to get out of the metal."

Minutes of the U.S. Federal Reserve's March policy meeting released last week showed some officials were keen on ending the stimulative bond-buying program this year, although those views were expressed ahead of last month's poor non-farm payrolls data and Friday's weak retail sales.

London copper fell to its lowest level in 1-1/2 years at $7,085 a metric ton, while aluminum hit a three-and-a-half year low.

China is the world's biggest consumer of copper.

Soft commodities sugar, coffee and cocoa were the only commodities seemingly little affected by the market rout on Monday, with prices particularly for sugar and coffee already at low levels due to large surpluses.

Lost Civil War Ring returned to family.... Story found in the News !! (2 replies)

After finding a ring engraved with the name Levi Schlegel, a man and a genealogist successfully located the living relatives of Schlegel, who is believed to have lost his ring nearly 150 years ago.

READING, Pa. A ring lost by a Union soldier from Pennsylvania during the Civil War has finally completed a long journey home.

The ring was worn by Levi Schlegel, a Reading-area native who is believed to have lost it nearly 150 years ago at an encampment near Fredericksburg, Va.

Relic hunter John Blue found the ring at a construction site in 2005. Though it was engraved with Schlegel's name and unit "Co. G., 198th P.V.," or Pennsylvania Volunteers Blue wasn't sure how to find Schlegel's descendants and kept the ring in a box for several years.

A genealogist ultimately helped Blue track down Schlegel's family. On Tuesday, Blue presented the ring to a distant cousin during a ceremony at Levi Schlegel's grave in Reading.

"This is truly a hero's journey," said the cousin, Ernie Schlegel.

Another distant relative, James W. Schlegel of Reading, said he felt pride as he touched the ring.

"I think about all the time that passed since Levi and so many others fought for our freedom," Schlegel, who served in the Air Force during the Vietnam War, told the Reading Eagle. "As a veteran, I know the importance of fighting for freedom, and I'm proud to know the Schlegel family did its part."

After the war, Levi Schlegel returned to Reading, where he worked as a carpenter and helped raise 11 children. He died in 1932 at age 91.

New Anti Metal Detecting Legislation (9 replies)

The State of Pennsylvania will be voting on a piece of legislation regarding 'hobby metal detecting' on Monday, April 15th, in Harrisburg, at the State Capital, and it many Legislators from other states will be taking notice. Rumor has it that other States have already pre-drawn up similar drafts, but are waiting to see how the Pennsylvania vote goes. The Legislation act nicknamed the 'MDetect-925 Act' pretty much states as follows...

---Pennsylvania detectorist will have fees and regulations to metal detect as of 2014, if THIS IS VOTED IN! And I am sure MANY STATES WILL FOLLOW!--- THIS IS URGENT! PLEASE READ!

1st... there is a State fee called a 'FREQUENCY TRANSMISSION COMPENSATION FEE'. You have to pay it to the State if your detector has a coil on it. A coil that sends signals into the ground. My local Senator said that the 'money goes to fund the recovery of earth worms, meal worms, grubs, or any other local underground dwelling creature that are found to be harmed/proved by sending detecting waves into the ground from a metal detector's frequency'.

2nd... there is a State fee called the 'DETECTING TRANSPORTATION FEE'. It is a fee you pay because as you walk around swinging your detector, the State Government says you are transporting your detector, hence the fee for transportation. To avoid the fee, you must not be carrying your detector on person.

3rd... There is a Local tax called the 'SITE EXCAVATION TAX'. It is a prepaid tax you pay to the local municipaility you will be hunting in. The prepaid tax goes to the Local Government to hold in a State drawn account. It is for the chance you injure yourself while digging your plug/cut. If injured, the prepaid tax goes to the local hospital you will probably be frequenting. If you are not injured, the prepaid tax is kept by the Local Government to fund the future 'Safe Digging' class that detectorists will be required to take, and the 'Safe Digging' class will also have it's own fee, in addition.

4th... There is a State fee that pays into a fund called the 'CLAD DISTRIBUTION FUND'. This fee goes into a fund to offset the clad coins that detectorists remove from the ground and put back into circulation into the US market. The State realizes that there is a remote chance clad coins can upend the market and cause a direct impact on inflation-or-deflation of the monetary system, so the fee covers any adjustments to the local market that may need re-adjusting, since metal detectorists can cause such unplanned swings in the money market unconditionally.

5th... There is a Local fee called the 'FINDS ROYALTY FEE'. This fee paid to the Local Municipality that you will be detecting in, to account for the treasure you will be removing from their grounds. The Local Municipalities have deemed the tax automatic on all detectorists, since most detectorists/citizens are predetermined to be dishonest and will not report all finds, so a royalty tax has been imposed and will be justly paid.

So what do you think?

Think it will pass?

Can you see this actually happen?

Would you ever think that such insanity would ever be suggested?

At any point reading this, do you ever think that this could be seriously done?

Have you ever heard similar insanity suggested?

Would any Government even care about a hobby like ours?

Would a Government try and bilk us because they knew we would just pay it easily and not even object or question the common sense to any of it other than a desperate 'moneygrab'?

.............This is just a joke! I just wrote this as an.... April Fool's joke, and to also mock the bogus and stupid legislation brought by desperate and dumb politicians at all levels of any Government. I always wondered if they knew they were laughed at(?)

Why Are You Into Detecting? Is It All About The Bling? Then You're Cheating Yourself Out Of It's Truest Treasures & Greatest Rewards, & Will Never Feel Really "Rich"... (7 replies)

This thing has been kicking around in my mind for a while now, and I thought I'd finally sit down and put into words why this hobby means so much to me, in the hopes that others one day will find the greatest enjoyment and rewards it has to offer, that took me a while to discover for myself with time and maturity to "season" my perspective, so to speak...

Early on, for a good part of the first half of my detecting "career", what mattered to me most was what I could find and how quickly I could find it. Friends, being out in nature, history...All these things were of secondary nature to me and only useful to achieve my objectives of finding that elusive old coin or big fat gold ring I had been after. Everything else other than what ended up in my pouch was pretty much not at the top of my priority list.

It took me some years in this hobby, along with maturity as I got a bit older, to really realize just what it had to offer to me that was much more rewarding in the long run, giving me far greater satisfaction as to all it had to offer. So, in the hopes that I help a few new to this great pass time "come up to speed" a little quicker, where it took me far longer to open my eyes, I've got a few stories to relate to you...

I'll start with an old acquaintance of mine that I've known for years. This friend I always looked forward to seeing and enjoying his company. With every visit with each other we'd talk and share past memories we experienced, but are good enough friends that we can let long periods of time pass without feeling the need to say a word, lost deep in our thoughts of of our own and just "knowing" that a word doesn't need said in contemplating where we've been, and where we are now in perspective traveling through life in each other's company to dwell on things.

My friend always welcomes me with opening arms, and yes, just like me, we both look a little order since we first met. A little rougher around the edges, with signs of wear or battle scars in our passing through life. Not the young and innocent types we once were, but grateful we know now what we didn't know back then.

This friend, while I can visit him on any given day and time, I especially reserve for days I need the peace, solace, and understanding he offers, where I can unwind and forget life's problems for a few hours, as we enjoy each others company and lose the world for a few hours. Not that we need the bonding, but often he's known to offer me up a few gifts for paying him a visit. I'm always thankful to him, but by far more so for the visit he always invites me in to without feeling imposed upon.

Sometimes I bring a friend of mine to visit him, so that he too can find what I have, and enjoy the experience of good friends and good company, leaving with a peace you just can't find in a pill or a bottle of your favorite liquor. I want others to enjoy what I get out of the visit to this old friend, and soak in the peace and tranquility he might offer to them, as he does to me, and perhaps they too will build a long standing relationship with each other.

This friend, and not the only important part of this hobby by far with more to follow in concept in the next post...In case you haven't guessed already, is not a friend but rather a site. This site is always welcoming to me, far secluded from the rush of the world, surrounded by woods, and offering me sanctuary when I need it most, to clear my mind and lose life's problems and challenges for a few hours, where I can put on those headphones and lose the world.

The perspectives of our "friendship" go far beyond what I can relate in words, but as one small example of our "relationship", this old friend of mine offers me gifts rather grudgingly, and in return I try to return the favor in kind, by removing trash both on the ground and on the surface, that I feel is a blight on this "friend's" good name in some ways.

Yes, I have far more productive places I could hunt, having pounded this site for all it's worth over eons, but to be honest I'd much rather spend a whole day of solitude in it's peaceful company, rather than go somewhere else and find much more yet have to deal with the reminders around me of life's intrusions.

Besides, this old "friend" of mine has other gifts to offer, such as the deer "he" allows to roam his property, the turkey that grace it's presence early in a morning's visit, or the smells of the nature in which "he" lives in his surroundings, and most importantly the fine sense of peace of mind that many times I can't find anywhere else. You can't put a price on that, no matter how much silver or gold you dig up.

I look at this site as a fine whiskey which I only pull out on special needed occasions, when I just need that relief that no amount of anything else will offer. Like a fine whiskey shared among friends to relax and enjoy each others company in deep thoughts and conversation, so does this site offer that to me. And, just like a fine whiskey, I don't guzzle down all it has to offer in one day, and "use it up" as quick as possible.

I never go there with the intent of taking it all, but rather it's the journey and not the destination, so I've never had the intent to strip mind the place, or in analogy take advantage of my good friend. It's a gentle more "let's share this moment" type of experience, where I don't want to rush the visit, nor do I want to use it up as quickly as possible so I can move on.

In 20 years or so I've not worked it hard. Yes, worked it, but not like I was robbing a bank. I want to savor every "sip of that whiskey". I want that bottle on the shelf for another 20 years to come, to be there on days I need it, when the world has me rattled. I want our relationship to live on without things getting old and dry for both of us, by revealing to each other all we had to offer as quickly as we could. I want us to be "friends" for a very long time.

And one day, should that friend not be able to offer me "gifts" anymore due to his present condition in life, I won't be dumping that him looking for more productive waters. Waters elsewhere may be more productive, but are they as calm, warm, and inviting? I think not, no matter what else I find some day...

In the next post, I'll relate the other true treasure to me in this hobby, which if you are missing then you'll never feel "rich", no matter how heavy your pouch gets with gold or silver...

Road trip East from Oregon (1 reply)

My family of four will be road tripping this summer in a truck camper from Oregon to Tennessee with my parents following closely behind with their little popup trailer.
Many stops here and there, and a pretty loose route with lots of time to venture off the main route.

General route but not locked in stone.
Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Nebraska, (optional states Louisiana and Texas depends on my cousin's plans).

Hopefully prepared to have fun in most areas.
We can dry camp, resort camp, stealth camp (kinda), do some kayaking, and most importantly do some metal detecting.
Planning to visit family in varioius states, see many sites, visit some theme parks, aerate many city parks and schools along the way.

Granted, I didn't list where in each state we are roughly planning to cruise (don't know for sure), but if you have any tips on metal detecting rules or regs in your city/state plz drop me some info. Don't stop there, if there is something worthy of seeing, visiting or doing in your state (listed above) by all means spill it!

BTW - My goal on this trip is to find any coin from the 1700's. The Pacific NorthWet only goes back to the 1840's for money. There may have been folks here before that, but it was furs and salmon in trade for anything, so 1700's isn't going to happen.

Thanks folks!

-Craig
