First gold with ctx x2! Plus some kind of brass nail or spike??? (3 replies)

I have been having a blast with my CTX. This machine is powerful and it really seems to pick up tiny targets. I have found a few rings so far. I silver and a few junkers plus the usual clad. This morning I hit on two gold targets. The first was this earring. It is stamped 14k. I think the diamonds are real. The second one really surprised me. This tiny chain. It is stamped 10k. I also found this nail or spike I am not sure what it is. I looks to be made from brass. It is pretty heavy. Any clues? These were all finds from the beach on the East Coast!

<div id="div_e7c5d5870542d89331cafbf5993b11d9"

I'm going to make the switch from tesoro where it pinpoints nice and centre of the coil. I've watched what seems like hours of video and am trying to understand why it appears some struggle with this. The following video is great right up to the end and then there is this massive hole dug for a coin. I don't get that. I actually felt ill when I saw that. And I'm sorry for using this specific vid but I'm really interested to make sure this is an exception and pinpointing is actually quite easy. Thanks.

Traveled on Wednesday. Powered it up on Thursday for a hunt. I got the little startup jingle and then a black screen. The only button that would work is the power button. Reset the battery. Changed the coil. Can't do a reset because I can't see the screen and the buttons don't work anyway. The only good news is that Minelab customer service was all over it and I got a call back within 10 hours and a return label the same day. I just got home and have it boxed up for shipment back tomorrow. I can't understand what went wrong. The only thing I can possibly link it to is a long ride in my truck with temps up to the low 90s. But, the E-trac was riding right next to it and it worked fine. I'm glad I had both along so I could hunt a little before I had to attend the wedding I traveled to. Found a 1917 Merc and a 1925S Wheat. Could only hunt for half a day. I'll update this post once I hear back on what happened to it. So far, the service has been first rate.

Blue Circle? (5 replies)

Group,

This is one event I haven't seen mentioned here on the forum. If I've just missed finding what I'm about to describe, please direct me to the correct thread.

I was hunting my yard yesterday afternoon with the 6-inch coil and the stock coin program when I got a solid 12/13-42 signal from two directions. pinpoint gave me a place to start digging and the depth reading was 7 inches.

Nice red circle in the silver part of the screen, and it was really filling in solid with color on my screen. At one point, there was the trashy red diamond directly underneath the good circle but at the bottom of the screen. After removing another inch of soil I noticed that the red diamond had turned into a blue circle that was filled with color (blue) just like my good signal indicator. I was still getting the 12/13-42 reading.

Bottom line, I ended up digging a 10 inch deep hole, only to find a square-sided nail, an iron washer and a bread tie that were in the side of the hole and 5 inches from where my pinpoint reading was.

I may have a total of 10 hours on my CTX. I've found mainly clad coins, but nearly everything good has rang out in the 12-40 to 12-44 range (pennies included),

Am I doing something wrong, do I just need more time on the machine, or does it need to go in for service? Oh yeah, what about that blue circle in the lower right of the screen?

Thanks,

SteveB

Seated Half & Quarter (11 replies)

I've been dying to do more detecting since I found those 2 large cents and the 1782 2 real last weekend. I was trying to think of a new spot since they paved over the parking lot where I did so well last week. I have maps of all the towns in the area going back to 1867 and was trying to think of a good spot when I remember where a church was on the old maps that hasn't been there for decades or a century. I knew it was going to be a little touch in the woods as I lost my pin pointer and the woods tend to be dark.

Glad I went out as the photos show. I found a 1878 seated quarter and an 1872-S in the same hole! This was as I was on my way out and they couldn't have been more than a few inches down. I pulled the quarter out first and it was so shallow I assumed it was a clad, hence my rubbing to see what it was (always a mistake). I double checked the whole and got another great signal an low and behold, my first seated half dollar. Both coins are much nicer than the scans and the quarter still has some mint luster around the stars. I haven't figured out wahat the large copper is yet, but it's either a large cent or a New Jersey. Very much doubt it would be a Connecticut or Vermont as it's fairly thick. Back in the 1780's CT's traded at 16 to the shilling and Jersey's traded at 12 to the shilling because they contained more copper by weight. It's also for this reason that Thomas Machin was buying CT coppers and striking his own NJ dies over them. He got 4 more for a shilling. This is also why a number of New Jersey varieties show the remains of a Connecticut copper. Many NJ coppers were made by Machin and although a lot of people are aware of Machin Mills coinage, they don't usually think of NJ's being a Machin product. FWIW, I was a contributor to the Redbook for about 10 years in the late 90's up until 2003 or so. I do know colonials.

One last thing, I also found a nickel sized button 10-12' down with the reverse stamped Double Gilt with a crown at the top with a star on each side.

( no Pictures as I can't pry it out of his hands).
the next day we found a Merc and an 1883 Indian Head that was really rough around the edges but it is still fun finding indian heads due to that feeling like we are really reaching back in the past. the next day we had a Wash quarter and 5 dimes. 2 Mercs, a Rosie, a 1904 Canadaian and a 1905 Barber. Only 2 Barbers of any type this year and found them back to back. Found these in a vacant school yard that had an old school on it that burned down ( can't find out when) and then a "modern" brick school that had been demolished.
we are using the modified Gone Hunting settings but I did mess with manual sensitivity a bit ( we usually use auto +3) and that is when we found the Barber dime at 9 inches. it was scratchy but repeated in both directions. Got crazy after that and dug a number of deep holes only to find nails and such. so it will take some getting use to the manual sensitivity mode but we will be using it again.

A great afternoon of detecting... A day of two firsts for me. (1 reply)

I have been detecting the area of an old Quaker meeting house that ceased operation in about 1860, Barely a remnant of the old meeting house remains at the edge of the field and there is an adjoining cemetery that now has barely a few stones left in it with writing on them, in fact most of the stones are just a piece of shale that has been stuck in the ground in rows. Today I was walking to an area near the meeting house that I call Button Hill since a couple years ago I hit the mother load of buttons there. On my way to Button Hill I stopped in my tracks and almost dropped to my knees and Praised Jesus ! What I seen was that the field next to the meeting house had been turned over for growing corn! I have been beating my way through this field for three or four years now since all it was used for was hay and it had not been turned since then.
This field has produced late 1700's american coins, buttons, and 1700's British coins but diminishing returns had set in and my hopes of ever seeing the earth turned over to uncover some new finds was not even on my mind today.
The corn now growing in the field is only about a foot high and the rows are about two to three feet apart so it gave me enough room to detect. After covering a couple rows I was rewarded with a button. Of course I had to be very careful not to damage the corn with the detector or my feet so it was slow going and I know that I am missing something where the corn is already growing but I will have to wait for the corn to be plowed back under before I can discover what is there.
What I was able to see today and never before was that there is a lot of shards of pottery, glass etc, and of course the ubiquitous clam shells that our forefathers loved to leave behind. These indicators of past activity were along every row I detected and really gave me a better understanding of the area of activity. I should note that we just had a couple days of really heavy rain which washed a lot of the soil away leaving small stones and things like the shells, pottery, earthenware very easy to spot.
The finds of the day was the nice little batwing buckle, and the Vermon Auctori. The obverse side of the coin is in really great shape, but the reverse although clean is pretty worn down.I believe the coin is of the Brittania variety. Besides those finds, I recovered a beat up 1817 Large Cent, (my second in a couple weeks, strange), some really nice buttons, pocket knife and some interesting pottery shards.

Besides the Vermom coin which was the first of those I have had the pleasure to recover. I also found two pieces of tombstone (never found one of those before) in the middle of the field. It's a shame that the nicer stones have long ago been looted from the cemetery and almost sadder that this one ended up in the middle of the field broken in pieces.

In case your curious my detector settings and methods have always been fairly simple. Swing slow and swing low to the ground, I use very little discrimination just because I like to hear what is in the ground. With the CTX I have been using the setup frequently referred to has GoneHunting.

One thing I would like to mention is gridding. I know it isn't nearly has much fun as walking around exploring. But I have found that I do much better going back and forth again and again making sure to cover all of the ground rather than just random wandering
Happy Hunting

I sometimes find myself going back to the van to get my etrac just because it's so nice to have the inline probe when trying to find a good target in a hole with bits and pieces of metal trash. Not to mention the aggravation of reaching for and turning on a belt hung pinpointer every time I dig a target. So much more convenient to flip a switch on the shaft of my detector and use a pinpointer that even gives me a headphone signal corresponding to my target discrimination.

My road trip to Utah (3 replies)

When I bought my E-trac last November I was a little lost in figuring out how to use it. Luckily, I saw a post by Jason in ID showing his year end totals and it said he was using an E-trac, also. So I PM'd him and asked him some questions and he became my unofficial mentor. We've PM'd and emailed back and forth for 6 months and he got me to a level with the E-trac that it would have taken much longer to attain on my own. We've been trying to get together for a hunt for several months. I'm in Idaho and Jason is attending dental school in Utah so it's not that far to travel. But, it's really been a challenge trying to get our schedules to line up. Finally, though, we were able to work out a plan where I could go down this last Thursday and Jason would be able to hunt half days (in the afternoon and evenings) on Friday and Saturday. If we didn't go with this plan, then it would have been into the fall before we likely could have worked something else out.

I got to Utah in the early afternoon on Thursday, got checked into a room and texted Jason to let him know I had arrived. I didn't want to bother him too much because Thursday was his 5th wedding anniversary and, of course, he had plans with his wife. He did reply back with the details on where we should meet on Friday afternoon so he could drive us to his chosen hunting location. Friday morning I was on my own and it's a big area when you're from out of town. I had done a little research on the iternet though and went to a couple of older parks. I wasn't expecting to find much because Jason had told me that most of the public areas in Utah had been worked pretty hard over the years. And he was right. No silver, but I did find some clad and a few coins from foreign countries. Around 11:30 I made the drive to a location closer to where we were to meet and then had lunch. Jason arrived at 1PM and we finally got to meet each other face to face after 6 months of electronic chatting. We talked quite a bit on the way to the spot where we were going to hunt. At the first location, Jason got us permission and we'd just settled in for some serious hunting when the tenant came back out and said that since she was renting the place her Mom said they'd better get permission from the owner. We said we understood and gathered up our stuff to leave. It just happened that there was another place right across the street and a man was working in the yard. So Jason got permission for that spot and we got down to work. Even though this was a fairly old place we each only found some clad and Wheaties. My highlight was a three coin Wheatie spill. We worked that spot thoroughly and then headed back to the car for a drive to another spot.

The new spot was rented by a young couple and they gave us the go ahead. It wasn't a huge yard, but it was big enough to last us for the rest of the evening. After we'd gridded the entire place, Jason had a Merc, more Wheaties and a ring (he never told me what it was made of) and some odds and ends. I pulled a couple of foreign coins from the same hole, one more Wheatie and two Mercs (I think Jason put me on the side where he thought the most silver would be)! We headed back to my truck and made plans for the next day.

On Saturday, Jason had a garage sale for most of the morning, so we didn't get a start until about 2PM and he had to be home at 7. We quickly went back to a place we'd asked to hunt the day before, but the parents weren't home. This time they were there and Jason scored again, so we went to work. There was a good bit of clad in this spot, but mixed in were enough deeper targets to keep it interesting. I could see Jason digging pretty steadily and he was racking up Wheaties and then he walks over and shows me two coins that are stuck together. It was obvious that one of them was silver and the other was some type of cent coin. I finished the little section I was in and then joined Jason in the larger section of the lawn. Fairly quickly I pulled a nice Merc and a Wheatie. Now even though I think I have a fairly slow swing, Jason is even more methodical than me. He proved that there's a reason for it. He moved over into the little section of lawn that I'd worked alone and then picked up two more good targets. One turned out to be junk, but the other one had two Wheaties in it. I'd completely missed it!

After this yard, we were almost out of time, but we did drive around and look for one more spot. We got a couple of shoot downs from owners and then spotted a really, really old house. The owner was in the yard and he said he was going to detect it himself, but he turned out to be an interesting person and we spent almost an hour talking with him. By then, Jason had to get going and I needed to get back to my room and get things sorted so I could pack up and head home today. Here's some pics of my total harvest of keepers and the two coins that Jason found stuck together. I know Jason had two Mercs and quite a bunch of Wheaties. He also found two rings. It was a great trip and hopefully we'll get together again down the road and I can host him up in my area.

<div id="div_059ec2670c79bb2756ea3e3520a4ebac"

At Least the CTX3030 Flies 1st Class... (14 replies)

I am an active duty military member moving to Japan in about a month. I have lived in a number of countries around the world in my 22 years of service and almost every time I move, something I care about gets broken. Worse yet - something my wife cares about gets broken - but that is a different story! This time, I decided to give my CTX3030 the best possible chance at survival - without causing me a lot of trouble associated with disassembly/reassembly when I get wherever I am going. I have shipped military weapons across the globe in either Pelican or SKB cases for years without incident - why not my CTX? Both brands are air tight, waterproof, have a built-in pressure relief valves and can be locked! They have been dropped, thrown, hit by small vehicles and still survived. Anyway, I found the perfect SKB case online - the SKB I-SERIES DOUBLE RIFLE BLK 3I-4217-7B-L. It has three layers of UNCUT foam that enable you to recess the dectector in the case evenly through cutting out specific areas. When complete, I was able to get the fully assembled CTX and ALL factory accessories (including charging cables, etc...) in the case - with room left for a CTX06 Coil and Pro-find 25, should I decide to add them. Bottom line, this is an easy project; all you need is about $225 for the case, a thin bladed razor knife, a black sharpie, one (1) can of Fusion Spray Paint, one (1) can of spray adhesive and about two (2) hours on a Saturday or Sunday. Sorry for the quality of the pictures - took them with my phone....

<div id="div_3839f978c73118376414945304fa73aa"

CTX Squeezed Out a Few (7 replies)

I hunted a small park that my brother-in-law and I had hunted to death for 2 years with E-tracs. I went very slow over an area and pulled a nice 1895 Indian Head and 1928 Wheat from about 7 - 8 inches. Notice the iron stain on the back of the Indian. It was laying on nail.

The Buffalo and Ring came from a yard that has also been hunted very hard and extremely trashy. At first I thought the ring was gold.

The CTX worked great!
