Video Analysis- Racer 2

The infamous Scannerguy1968 on YouTube and his test bed have become quite the internet sensation. I have spent hours watching his videos and comparing his findings with what I read on forums, etc. To make a long story short, I'm wondering if someone that owns Racer 2 could confirm after watching his YouTube video https://youtu.be/5Qr2DJgMbcI whether or not his test is somewhat skewed based on his Gain setting of 99? I believe I've heard people say that too high a Gain setting can actually detract from the detectors performance. Thanks for reading and sharing researched opinions.

Not to criticize video,,,,my experiences are gain at 99 in tone,,,,tough to hunt with.
Can it be done in certain places/soils?? Sure

Gain 99 in 3 tone is very doable in a lot of places-- not as deep as 2 tone though.

Most times the highest I can run gain on Racer 2 is around 93 using 2 tone

Deep mode-- on milder ground will get a tad more depth.
On higher minerlaizied ground,,,,deep mode useless,,,and an make signals actually worse.

Difference in overall depth capabilities between 2 tone and 3 tone growes nearer as soil mineral rise.

I can't run my Racer 2 with the gain at 99 at any of my sites. It's WAY too chattery.

Only at 2 or 3 of my sites can I run the gain over 90.

I have noticed no appreciable depth increase with gain greater than 75 but I have, however, noticed better target ID.

Rather than hunt with a crazy sparky machine, I generally hunt trashy sites in 3 tone with gain between 70-80 depending on ground.
No filters and iron audio at 3, so the machine runs just a little sparky.

When I hit a deep target I flip into 2 tone with the press of 1 button to verify it.
My 2 tone has gain between 85 and 90 depending on ground, and iron audio set at 1.
I'm learning what Keith speaks of with the open gate audio.
I like the VCO audio of 2 tone for target verification.

I tend to run my R2 @ 98 gain (3-tone mode). For most places I hunt that works well, if I get hit with EMI, I just drop it until the machine is stable.

Yes I agree .......the racer2 may end up being the king of trashy areas.....I really don't think any others can beat it......just my thoughts on it....

As someone who has owned both the Racer 2 and the Deus I can say the Racer 2 can be beat in trashy areas.

Southwind, did you mean to say "can" or "can't" be beat in trashy areas?

Can. I thought my Deus was more reliable in trashy areas. Although I still own my R2 and sold my Deus.

I believe the Racer 2 is more reliable than the XP Deus in trashy areas. I have hunted a trashy site behind an XP Deus & a V3i. My hunting partner "Texan" and I have been killing this trash site with our Racer 2's. I have hunted this site this past year using a V3i, XP Deus, AT Pro, and a Tesoro Vaquero. None of these machines could hang with the Racer 2.

On the other hand there are many factors to consider here. Southwind you may have figured out a better trash program on your XP Deus than I had. I have sold most of my machines this year to one reason or the other. I'm down to two machines now. The Racer 2 and the Tesoro Cibola.

I used Gary's "Sifter" program.

Every detector in my personal arsenal has matched or bettered the XP Deus in the hands of several Deus users. For me it's not a good 'fit' in my arsenal as it lacks a good, smaller-size coil, I don't care for the multi-battery system to charge, and I do not like excessive 'tinkering' to try and make a Deus do what my Racer 2, Relic or CoRe can so very 'simply.' As I have often stated this past many years, I like 'Simple,' 'Functional' and 'Performance' and the Racer 2 fits each desired requirement.

Quite correct as I have found. Very few detectors on the market can, with the exception of the sister company's FIRS CoRe and FORS Relic, all of which share company with my Racer 2.

True, he, and others, might have tinkered around enough to find a program they have saved that will tackle some of the site challenges almost like a Racer 2. But change to a few different locations, and I just turn the Racer 2 on and get busy hunting while many with that other product are busy trying to find the right mix of settings to come close to Racer 2 performance.

I have also thinned out almost all the 'extra' detectors in my arsenal, and my reliable Racer 2 is joined by my Relic's and CoRe, and to counter your turn-on-and-go Cibola I have the Silver Sabre µMAX. unfortunately for me, my health limitations and mobility keep be from getting into Competition Hunts like I used to in my younger days since my first in '71, but when I do make the effort today on occasion, I grab my Racer 2 or Silver Sabre µMAX, preferring the Racer 2 when the hunt site is highly mineralized ground that also has pea gravel or rocks.

Continue to enjoy your Racer 2.

I shot a test video today of the racer 2 and deus with some iron nails and a silver dime. I will post it in the metal detecting forum because its a head to head video when it gets uploaded. I will tell you this before hand the racer will not out seperate the deus bottom line when you put the iron above the coin the racer clearly loses. I dont work for deus or makro and have never gotten anything free from either. I dont mean this in a disrespectful way Monte but what you call tinkering I just call turning on the machine and setting it up for the site conditions im hunting. thick iron ,trash etc. .I find the makro to be a solid machine but watch the video and you will see for yourself what happens when the iron is elavated above the target. It will beat the deus on one test as you will see in the video but not the one that counts. If you like simple thats fine the makro and noktas are that but if you do your homework the deus is not complicated either just got to take the time to learn it and its very user friendly. I will be selling the racer 2 not that its bad its just not better than what ive already got. I will post when I get the video up and will not be commenting on the racer 2 here anymore because I get kinda bent out of shape when someone comes to the deus forum and says something negative about my detector.lol thanks monte for your help with the makro.
