News Sharpshooter = New Racer 2

Just got the Nels Sharpshooter coil on my R2 and took it out this afternoon to one of my more difficult spots, where is just a ton of iron debris. Frankly, it makes such a difference that it seems like I have a new detector. It is so freaking stable now, even in 2 tones. No pops and clicks, no mystery targets. All this time I thought it was just me. With this coil and 3 tones, and the settings below (which I got somewhere on this forum) the target separation and ID is amazing. Those settings were good before, but now they're fantastic. So maybe my stock coil was bad. Looking forward to great things with this detector.

ID=0
Tone breaks= 28, 65
Audio tones = 100, 350, 700
Iron audio = 2

Keep us posted on the sharpshooter coil. Thinking of getting one for my Racer 2.

I have the CORS Fortune coil (same as the Nel Sharpshooter) for my Racer 2. It almost never comes off the detector.

The Sharpshooter is just the right size for trashy areas. I love it.

Just yesterday Monte and I went out to an old ghost town site. So I decided to give my Sharpshooter coil a try on the Racer 2. The coil did better than I expected it to. This site is covered in old square nails, rusted tin etc.
I chose an area that was particularly trashy , lots of nails, I got a small child's ring ( wouldn't slide on my pinky finger) and a small metal button with a flower design. The sharpshooter managed to sniff them out in all the non-ferrous trash. I was very pleased with the coil, it worked well.

Then Monte and I took a break, so out came the Nail Board Test. I pinpointed out a somewhat clean area and we placed a zinc penny in the center position. The R2 w/sharpshooter coil easily got 8 of 8. Then Monte just happened to have his 1836 Cap Bust Half Dime in his truck. So he placed that in the center position and sure enough I was able to get 8 of 8 again. If you want a good test for your machine....try a half dime.

So yep I agree with Tom and Kopak, the coil works great and i don't think anyone would be disappointed if they got one for their Racer or Racer 2.

Hey, Tom you ready for NV. I sure am, looking forward to it. Those outings there have always been fun and rewarding.

Those are the setttings I posted. Glad I could finally help someone out!!

I use the OOR coil in my trashiest spots and love it.

Anyone know how the OOR coil and the sharpshooter compare?
Is it worth owning both?

Gregg - I'll miss the NV outing but I'll be at the OR outing.

The OOR is a great coil and I preferred it over the newer 5.5" coil that comes in the Racer 2 Pro Pack. I bought a CORS Shrew coil (3.5" x 7") and the OOR hasn't been used since. The Shrew/Snake coils separate better than the OOR and offer more coverage. The Fortune/Sharpshooter has replaced the Makro 5.5" x 10" coil for me also.

For the nastiest spots, I think a better comparison for the oor coil is the NEL Sharp or NEL Snake coil. I can get better results with the Sharp or Snake coil over the oor Coil in the nastiest of conditions. As great as the Sharpshooter coil works, in the nastiest of conditions I still use the smaller Snake or Sharp coil.

But what is funny is it depends on the machine. The oor coil on a Fors CoRe will work much better than an oor coil on the Racer machines. The oor coil on the Fors Core will unmask better than a oor coil on the Racer/Racer 2.

However, using the Nel Sharp on the Racer 2 just barely nudged out the Fors CoRe with oor coil on some test Monte and I did. ( We took the nail board test, used a half dime, and then took a small bent nail and started putting it closer and closer to the half dime. So besides the nails already present on the board we added the small bent nail to the test making it extremely tough. On the Racer machines, the Sharp and Snake coils performed better than the oor and 5 1/2 Makro coils.

On the test we did, I was surprised and guessed it wrong before we started. It was the oor coil that fell out first, then the 5 1/2 Makro coil, then Snake coil and it was the Sharp that did the best. It made it till the small bent nail was right next to the half dime, but not touching. It achieved the most hits doing the 8 sweeps over the other small coils. But having said all that, we intentionally made the test very tough. If all I had was the oor coil I would happily use it in the nastiest of spots. Regardless the sharpshooter is still a 9"coil. Those old railroad ghost towns are literally carpeted in non-ferrous /ferrous junk and I feel a small coil will still give you an advantage.

However, it would be fun to pit the Sharpshooter against the smaller coils on the test and see how long it can hang in there.

Also, I am relatively new to the Makro platform. I got my Racer 2 late last fall, but have been laid up with a bad elbow, so have had probably fewer than a dozen outings with it. Thus, it's very helpful hearing from you guys experienced with the Nokta/Makro detectors. But I did a LOT of reading and research, especially Monte, whose name I know and respect from my Tesoro days before I chose the Racer 2. I'm very happy with my decision.
