So if you don't praise the Racer as the greatest thing since sliced bread you're a "hater"

Says a lot about the company IMO.

Sometimes reality SUX doesn't it! Especially when people are willing to speak what's on their mind.

Can't say I've seen one at $250 but there is one right now at $270 that hasn't sold. A hint of the future R2 and Impact I think?

The real treasure is in the hunt...

Read through that thread--it got kind of ugly there in places. A lot of name calling, etc. Personally, I like my Racer 2 and think it's pretty good for the $$. It's not an eTrac, but for my purposes it's been darn good. Certainly better than the AT Pro I had before it.

As to buying one for $270, maybe the Red Racer. The 2 is a much different story.

I think the thread proves that a lot of people are hoping to find a detector that will do it all for them----no thinking required.

I think what you think is the only opinion that matters. If you like the racer, don't let someone else's opinion sway yours.

I'm no a real brand loyalist. I currently have detectors made by Makro, Nokta, White's, Minelab, and Tesoro. In my forty plus years detecting I've also had Fisher, Teknetics, and Compass detectors and probably others. No single frequency VLF can touch the Multi-frequency detector when it comes to depth on wet saltwater beach sand, but nowhere does it say that the Makro or Nokta detectors can. The companies don't make that claim, yet folks try to read into it that they (Makro & Nokta) are claiming to be as deep as the M/F detectors. What I can say is that the Makro detectors go deeper on wet Saltwater beach sand than any other SINGLE frequency detector I've ever used. I'm heading to the beach next week for some beach hunting. I'll be taking my Minelab Sovereign for the Wet Sand and my Racer 2 for the dry sand. I'm pleased to know that if the dry isn't paying, I can drop down to the wet with my Racer 2 and pull targets 8 - 12" deep if needed.
Now hit the nail and iron infested sites and I'm confident that my Nokta and Makro detectors will run circles around any other brand of detector I've ever used. If I'm hunting a ghost town, railroad siding or old home site then I'm going to leave all my other detectors at home and only take the Racer 2 and Impact. The White's, Minelab, and Tesoro stay home.
I've seen a few folks get the Racer when it first came out only to sell it shortly after because they didn't take the time to learn it. Not that it has a long learning curve, it's just that they are different than every other detector available. I've also read on the forums that a number of those folks have said they'd like to get another and give it another try. I think the fact that hundreds of folks that have bought the Impact and the Racer or Racer 2 previously. The same can be said for those with the racer 2. Many or most of those folks had the Racer before getting the Racer 2. I think that says a lot about the performance of these detectors. There is no single do it all detector, but there are some that will perform extremely well at a number of different types of detecting, and I think that Nokta and Makro have a couple of detectors that fit into that excellent all around detector category. I just use what works for me the best.... if a magnet on a stick outperformed my detectors, it would be my tool of choice

Hey JMHO, how can you take your Sovereign but leave your Minelab at home?

berryman - I take my Sovereign to the beach, and leave my Minelab (Sovereign) at home when hunting iron infested sites. That's how. :spin:

That Red Racer is now listed at $250.00. I've never used a Makro detector. I have no idea how they perform. It appears the R2 is a much, much improved model over the Red Racer. The Impact has gotten favorable reviews as well. I do well with my stable of detectors. I have two Garrett detectors and an F75 SE ltd. But that's just it. Most of us have a detector or 2 or 3 or more. No one has created that one do it all perfect detector. When that one hits the market I will be first in line.

There are a lot of R2's for sale. I think in part because a lot were sold. And part of it is some people don't mesh with that particular machine but this can be true for any machine. Finding a machine that you like and enjoy is half the battle. Then there is the buy foreign or domestic paradigm. Some will never buy a foreign detector and there are some who won't let that be a deterrent. Either way detecting should be fun. Some will be brand loyalist and some won't. There's enough room for both.

I think the problem in the above thread from the other forum is two fold. You have that one guy who espouses praise for everything Makro/Nokta yet he will take shots at other brands. Imo , that is a big no ! Every manufacturer has had issues at one time or another. However they all straighten themselves out and continue on. Second is "that guy" can get a bit petulant and snarky and when someone calls him out he gets a "I'm gonna take my ball and go home" attitude. If he would be consistent with admitting the short comings of Makro/Nokta along with the other manufacturers , I believe he wouldn't have to spend so much time defending himself. Or, he could just not take shots at other manufacturers and the discourse would take a turn for the positive.

All I really want in a machine is the ability of the CTX in salt water. The speed of an F75. The depth of a PI. Waterproof. A picture screen so I don't have to dig trash. I mean really , is that asking too much ?

You are right, Cajunman. Just like a lot of other problems in the world--the clash of two extremes.

I suspect some of the Racers up for sale are from people that upgraded to the Impact. I have the Red Racer, Racer2 and Impact, and to be honest, I'm not seeing a need to keep the Racers now that I have the Impact, same with my F75 LTD2, their redundant.
