What started out as beautiful day was fun, but I must admit, I made my choices so I had to live with them. My choices being staying home and babysitting my five year old grandson Jack, and his sister four year old Ali, while their mother ran errands, OR going with the brothers on a ride around central Arkansas with the full intention of going to see our older half brother Robert. Weighing these options, I chose the latter. Of course, this was something I did to myself, so I have to live with it.
Actually, it was not bad at all. They DID keep me in the back seat,.......something they have done since the inner tube and pirate incident as children, and they get a real kick out of this. Actually, being in the back seat is okay with me. Tom cannot scare me driving, and John can't backseat drive. Plus, I get to sit in middle of the back seat and listen to all their ramblings and goings on, or simply choose to sit back and relax.
About this truck thing. About three weeks ago, Tom went out and bought his own Christmas present. A new white Toyota truck, which was well over due for him. It has a dual cab, short wheel base bed, really pretty. Since his last truck was one of a smaller nature, and coming up on 200,000 miles, it is probably a wise purchase on his part.
Not to be undone, John went last week and bought himself a new GMC truck. It is also long overdue, as he drove whatever vehicle was left in his driveway when his wife and children left each morning. This could be anything from a VW van (no daisies on it), to a Grand Prix. Since he is anxiously awaiting this coming December to retire, he was trying to put off buying a new truck, but when he saw his brother bite the bullet and make his purchase, he decided maybe getting his truck would be a good idea too, then neither of them would have to depend on current transportation to get that boat into the water, or pull the camper to the woods. This way, they are actually double covered!
They are both proud of their new vehicles, and both are really very nice! As I got into the backseat today, I started catching up with them since my trip back from Colorado. I even had Tom stop at the Sonic and bought them lunch! I thought that was very nice of me
plus, they cut me a little slack and didn't aggravate me near as much as they usually do. I did have to witness the two of them being themselves while trying to place an order at the Sonic. We had just been talking about how you order a hamburger, and then the person taking the order will notoriously ask you if you would like cheese on it. Thus, making it a CHEESEBURGER. Sure enough, when Tom ordered three hamburgers, the little girl asks "Would you like cheese on this???" "No" yelled John, "That would make it a CHEESEBURGER, now wouldn't it?" I don't know how many times she spit on our burgers, thinking he was being a wise ass, but when you eat out, you just have to put that thought behind you! Still, I feel it's always better to be nice! Your chances of a good sandwich with NO spit is a lot better. After bringing out our order, and getting a good tip from these two old farts, I apologized from the back seat. By the time she left, we were all best friends.
As things like this happen, I am reminded over and over of the two brothers in the movie "Second Hand Lion". If you have seen it, you will understand. If you haven't your should. It's one of my most favorite movies of all times, and the two brothers in it ARE my brothers.
We did go visit our older half brother, and that's another story in itself! We had a great visit, and he was really glad to see us.
Spending the day with these two guys was a good choice. It is not often we can all three get together and do this. Plus being chauffered around the hills of central Arkansas was relaxing in itself.
Tomorrow, I am going to baby sit for my grandchildren, and perhaps help Scott with some things around here in the yard. But today was fun, relaxing, and it just makes me realize how much I miss these two being under my feet all the time. Believe me when I say though, by the end of the day, kissing them goodbye, I realized how we did all grow from the rambuncious kids who fought all the time, into the adults that we are now. Way back when we were growing up, you could have never made me believe that these two guys would be my best friends. My mother told me when I was a little girl, that "Someday, Linda, you will find out just how much you love them". "Never" was usually my reply. Well, once again mother was right,.........though it seems like it took an eternity, I look back not and realize the time sure did fly by!
