This is how I set up my Golden with the Cleansweep coil which is what I use most with it.

I set the Notch Width dial to the 10 o:clock position. I set my Discrimination to Minimum. I set my Threshold at the 3 o:clock position, and I run the Sensitivity just a little into the red past the 10 mark. I leave the Notch switch to off.

I get 7 very distintive tones.

1-- Low tone = always iron.
2-- Mixed low/gold tone (I call that nickel tone the gold tone) = low conductive foil paper, iron with junk attached, etc
3-- Gold tone = foil/rings/nickels/modern tabs (though at depth some modern tabs move more into tone range 4)
4-- mixed gold/zinc tone = larger rings, tabs, very thin silver rings
5-- zinc tone = zincs, screwcaps, steel bottle caps,
6-- mixed zinc/high tone = some corroded zincs, steel bottle caps,
7-- high tone = high coins/silver

I like it. I can hunt with no discrimination and the resulting loss of depth (the cleansweep already has a depth limitation and discrimination just adds to it). I can quickly tell the conductive range of every target, and I can focus on what I like to listen for, gold.

I like the 10 o:clock setting because most all of my gold rings (except for the large men's rings) will sound off with with a gold tone or some blending of the gold tone.

I do use the notch switch sometimes to clean the audio signal. See where it's leaning the most. And sometimes I get a lot of audio and need the wide notch to clear my ears so I can tell the low tone and zinc tones apart.

Nice setup. If you turn your dic right above iron you would not hear that low tone correct?
That would be unusable to me, constant low tones.

Yes, you could turn the disc up and the low tone would be silent. So would any small womens gold rings that were deeper than about 2". Tesoro's loose depth when discimination is used. The Cleansweep coil already has a max depth limitation of about 5 inches. Turn the dial to kill the iron audio and you just killed 2-1/2 to 3" of depth off of a small woman's gold ring (just like the one you just found with the Compadre).

That is why the Notch Width setting is so important to me. I completely removed good targets from the low tone range, thereby allowing me to run with no discrimination. Low tones are ignored, all other tones get consideration.

Nice going Mike. It's hard to explain how the Notch Width Dial can change the tones with the Notch Switch OFF. On my "old" tone Golden I can move sport drink foil caps into and out of the iron tone range by moving the Notch Width Dial. The sick duck tone range which is the tone range just above iron and sport drink foil caps is reserved for nickels and gold. I like hearing the sick duck tones.

What's the depth like on the Golden Umax? Are you finding stuff in the 6" to 7" range or deeper? Or is it less? What's the deepest it will find coins or jewelry?

If 1 through 7 are low to high tones then it looks like you have the old tone setup.
For instance 3 and 5 would be swapped. No?

Diggler, I was thinking the same thing. It sounds exactly like my old tone. Which I really like.

Nope.

The old tones are low / middle low / middle high / high = iron & foil / nickel & tabs / zinc cents / high coins

The new tones are low / middle high / middle low / high = iron & foil / nickel & tabs / zinc cents / high coins.

The way I have my new tones adjusted (based upon my notch width setup) is:

(low tone) = iron
(middle high tone) = foil & nickel & round tabs {primary gold range]
(middle low tone) = square tab & zinc cents
(high tone) = high coins

Blended tones are:

(low tone) and (middle high tone) very distinctive blended tone = funny iron or steel shapes or very light foil paper.
(middle high tone) and (middle low tone) very distinctive blended tone = square tabs and some canslaw
(middle low tone) and (high tone) very distinctive blended tone = zincs/ steel bottle caps, etc.

Depends on the ground minerals.

Davehut once reported a 9" deep dime with the stock coil. JB(MS) and Tinfoil could give you good information about depth. Might search for their posts.

I won't mention my depth because I'm in high minerals and my expectations would be totally different than yours.

Mike got a pic of the face plate and your settings? i have an old tone machine would they be similar settings? but do like the way you have it set up pic would be like a thousand words in this case for me anyway.

Wow this is an old post! I recently got a new Golden and my unit can reliably hit dimes to about 5.5 inches max. 95% of what I find in my parks are in the surface to 4 inch mark. Hope this helps.

Wow this is an old post! I recently got a new Golden and my unit can reliably hit dimes to about 5.5 inches max. 95% of what I find in my parks are in the surface to 4 inch mark. Hope this helps.

Thanks Mike. Old post ? Quite possibly. I was running a seemingly endless search trying to get some depth capability info on the Golden. Thanks you for the straight goods. Although I have to admit that this sounds a bit shallow for my liking.
