I have not yet been to the beach with my new detector. I saw a UTUBE video where he was really finding lots of coins & jewelry! Do you ever go out on the beach for an hour in the winter & find nothing or do you always find coins and jewelry regardless of the month? And in the summer do you find more in the wet sand or dry sand? And low tide or high tide is one better than the other? Also your opinion of stainless vs galvanized metal? Has anyone successfully made a homemade sand scoop that worked ok? I have hesitated ordering a plastic one thinking maybe they are inferior to the metal mesh ones. It seems to me the ,metal mesh would sift the sand better than the round hole kind. I was also wondering if there may be a metal kitchen scoop made that might work. I have a chinese metal scooper that looks pretty sturdy. Any tips would be most appreciated. What THINK I want is a stainless scoop with 1/2 " mesh on a pole. Cathy in NC

I have had Hunts that did not produce anything but junk... This was in the summer ........ So you may have days summer, or winter that are non productive for good finds.

See if you can get hold of some books on beach detecting...many of your questions will be answered. Garret produces books on beach detecting, and Clive J Clynick has written many. There are others as well. Detecting magazines also have articles on beach detecting, so there is no shortage of research material out there. Then you are getting the word from the horse's mouth, as the saying goes. HH

tesoro website has a download for their magazine, and it is worth reading. all kinds of info. remember wet salt sand is conductive at the beach, different than dry sand, so adjustments have to be made. salt water machines are set up different, some machines can handle it some cant. some do a fair job, some are useless.

The only Tesoro detector I now regularly use over wet sand at a salt water beach is the Sand Shark.

Between the high and low tide lines is frequently a good place to find coins and jewelry. Total target counts for me are generally lower at the beach than over dirt.

For dry sand I like a scoop with a wire basket bottom. Sifts nicely. Not strong enough to dig deep in wet sand or in sand with shells and rocks. A long handled aluminum or stainless steel scoop works better in the wet. In the water it will sift well with water in it. Over wet sand, I dump it out and spread the dumped sand out to get to the target. These scoops are not inexpensive but are purpose built and useful. Look at the beach and scuba forum. The wet sand and water areas can be some of the better gold jewelry areas to hunt. It does take some different equipment than you would use hunting yards.

If your using the SIlver UMax stay in the dry sand because in the wet it is not the best machine for that type of hunting. Sure you might find something but your going to be chasing more false signals and getting frustrated then anything with it in wet sand.

If you live in a cold area the best place to search is where kids sled on hills, I have found wayyyy more things there then I have ever found on the numerous beaches I have/still search, and most my finds have been surface finds just under the snow if there is any, or 1-2 inches deep.
