Tesoro recommends Alkaline but what is the opinion of using Nickle Metal Hydrozide instead?

Alkalines are too expensive in my opinion. I have been using rechargeable NMH batteries for 3 &1/2 years in my Tejon. They are 1.2v instead of 1.5v but they seem to work fine.
