I believe it is a 5 pin. Seems to me that the 4 pin detectors are the "relic" detectors?

The first Conquistador was a 5-pin Tesoro with a preset ground balance and a normal tune all-metal mode with retune toggle. Probably had the ED-120 discriminate circuitry.

I have an early Conquistador. It's a 5 pin.
I have not had it out hunting but on indoor nail board testing it acts identical to my Bandido II uMax.
The disc circuit on the bottom end is identical but on the top end it won't disc out dimes like the Bandido will.
It will disc out zincs and early wheat pennies.
Slightly deeper air test compared to the Bandido but very close.
It's a nice unit and I plan on putting a ground balence mod on it this winter.

I read before that the early non uMax Conquistador had a glitch that made the ground balance shift when you adjusted the
Disc knob but mine does not seem to suffer from this problem.
It's a nice little unit.

Bryan, yes I am the one who has experienced that with every 'original' Tesoro Conquistador I have handled. If you would, shoot me an e-mail as I'd like to discuss your unit with you.

Thanks,

You bet Monte. I will shoot you an email.
I thought maybe mine didn't suffer from the glitch because maybe I had a late model that had
been updated.
I noticed when I opened it up to adjust the ground balence pot that the circuit board was labeled
Tesoro µMax even though my Conquistador is the older pre µMax model with frequency switch underneath.

Really cool post.
Hope to hear what Monte had to say and how yours came with a micromax chip before micromax.
Maybe shows that these companies have things in the works and are far more in-grained than I previously thought.
Love my tesoros.

I talked to Monte about it and we didn't solve the mystery but did a little speculating that my
Conquistador might have been a very late model unit.
Maybe they went to the newer µMax circuit board before they changed to the newer model housing with the
frequency switch in a different location on the housing.
Again just speculation on our part but my unit does not have the shifting ground balence problem..
I think Monte said he talked with another guy who had one like mine with no problem.

It would be interesting to hear from other Non µMax version Conquistador owners to see what there circuit board is labeled.
Mine is labeled "Tesoro µMax" in the top right hand corner of the board. If you pull the two face plate screws and pull back the face plate it is easy to see.

Yep.. Both little boxes. The older one has the freq. switch on the bottom. The newer µMax model has the switch on the face plate.

I have the more recent model with the frequency switch on the face plate. I usually run the 7" concentric on it when participating in planted coin hunts with good success. Not a depth demon, but a fun detector none the less.

I hear the 7" concentrics are the best for 5 pin? Thinking about getting one for all of the 5 pins that I have.

The 7" separates well and has fairly good depth for the size.
