Just bought a nice Deleon with the 8x11" coil, every seems to work find except it keep s showing a penny with a "95" as id. number,95 usually for quarters or half dollars. Also is this the best coil for this machine, there's the 7",9x8",12x10" and I saw a 8" brown donut hole with the 5 point connection? All feed back appreciated, cjm

Well I can only think it's that 8x11 coil and that whoever you got it from didn't send the u it in and have the machine set to it.
All non adjustable GB machines perform the best when the machine is set for the coil. That machine came with a 9x8 Concentric. Most have good luck switching the coils and running pretty well.
But I've also heard of that DD causing zinc to disc out higher.

Another thing to understand about the Deleon (and Cortes) is that the GB is tied into the digital target system and by changing coils you throw off the GB. This is true with any machine. If the GB is off, the target ID is off.
The Cortes has a GB function but it only affects the all metal and the disc is still factory set.

When I got my Deleon I sent it in along with my Troy super 7 coil that needed work and killed two birds with one stone. I had my coil rebuilt/tuned and had my Deleon adjusted and set to that coil.

So there are a couple reasons why this can happen as stated above.
But it should read zinc unless it's it's a copper penny (82 and earlier) then it should ring that high.
But zinc should read as zinc on the bar graph.

Hope this helps.

P.s. I've never run any other coil on mine but I've heard great things about the stock spoked coil on it. Deeper machine than anyone thinks.

And it will read zinc if it was a 1984 penny or newer,at least it always have for me prior to sending it out to him. In1983, the pennies are split some were still copper, some 1983 were the later crappy zincolns. I promise you that that coil works exactly the same for ID as the stock coil does. In fact, I can trade you the original stock coil for the RSD coil in return, if you would like ?

It seems like a common issue of people not knowing about pennies and calling them all zinc.
If the machine came from bibelot then I'm sure it's in working order.

Weird that he sold you his Deleon!!!

If he watches the display, it does bounce to zinc momentarily but orients more on the silver bar more or less. where corroded zincs seldom tab on the silver bar at all.I really liked that feature, allows you to dig the good pennies as I call them. Stoofs, I made a deal with the devil (my wife) that I would sell two machines that I seldom use upon buying the XP Deus. If that wasn't bad enough, she set the price according to sold ebay auctions to give them a fair chance to sell, thinking that I would price them higher and not sell them .I promise that I'll never make a deal like that in order to get another machine again. That Deleon is one coin hunting machine, The RSD coil separated targets better than the stock and has a slight edge on depth as well. It was no slouch with the stock coil but the RSD is hands down better for smaller targets and coins on edge.

Haha wow. Gotta hand it to her on not falling for anything by making you set the price to be fair. Lol

I love my DeLeon, and I love it even more when I hunt with the Tesoro 5.75 round concentric coil.

It really shines when the dirt us loaded with pull tabs, etc. No loss of depth, and the machine is even lighter weight and perfectly balanced. No need to send the DeLeon in for tuning with this coil.

Keep in mind that the DeLeon doesn't lie often. If it hits it hard, 90% of the time it's spot on. If the numbers and audio bounce around, then your coil is probably over junk.
Flattened bottle caps will fool the machine, telling you it's a solid 95. If the sound is exceedingly loud, probably a larger piece of junk. Clear solid mid sounds is what you want to hear.

Hope this helps . The great guy you bought your Deleon from, Ivan. Helped me immensely in the beginning. I have no doubt that you bought a great detector. He would've have sold it to you, otherwise.
Good luck to ya!

I thought 1982 was the split year for Copper & Zinc cents. I could be wrong.

You are not wrong, according to the internet . I don't know the answer. I'm pretty sure that I've dug a lot of 1983 pennies that weren't corroded and some that were. I'll go through my jar of dug pennies after work and make sure I am not dreaming though but the internet doesn't lie so I might be dreaming after all. Thank you for taking the time to post,

You can see what looks like corrosion on the 83"s (right side)The 82's( left side ) I didn't see any corrosion but that doesn't mean they didn't change that year, I just have one that might have signs of starting the corrosion phase. Usually you don't have problems seeing corrosion, most newer pennies are eaten up badly. Thinking if they changed in 82, they definitely changed more drastically later in the decade.

I've dug some zinc cents that were only in the ground a couple years and were already corroded away to the point where they were worthless. The type of soil they are dug out of definitely makes a difference on their condition.

The newer the pennies the quicker they corrode.
I've gotten to the point of putting ones with holes or edges corroded in my trash pouch.
I've tried to save these, but when I put them with even other zinc pennies in my tumbler, they secrete some black dye that then stains the other pennies.
It seems once the outer shell of these has been breached, they're useless to try and save or clean up.
Found that out the hard way and found it's better to just throw them out lol

That is what leads me to believe 1983 was the date that they changed instead of 1982 but I could be wrong. Make no mistake, I get the badly corroded pennies that are worthless to dig. I just don't see them in the '83 penny as they are suppose to have changed. The newer the pennies ,the more trouble with corrosion.Aluminum would have held up better than they do.

Both coin books I have list 1982 as the changeover.

The corrosion is a result of the plating being compromised.

I looked it up on Google and Bing, both said 1982 as well. my silver sabre 2 doesn't care to distinguish them.
