It entirely depends on how and where you are going to use it. The Cortes is very versatile but is not the deepest and only has ground balance in all metal mode. The "HOT" detectors are deep but lack TID. The Cibola lacks ground balance for bad ground.

I supose that if I was going to get only one (except for water hunting) I would get the Lobo SuperTrac,Tejon or Bandito if TID was not an issue or the Cortes if I wanted TID.

You really can't go wrong with any Tesoro

Best is always the big bucks.
More technology went into it.

Silver uMax generally gets the kudos in bang for the buck category.

Have fun making a decision!

Bought a Vaquero then a Cortes. I like the Cortes better because of the screen, gives me a quick clue before I dig, shows target depth at the same time. Iron signals show up on the screen, save me a lot of time. Air tested both machines, they are neck and neck for gold items.

I have no tesoro yet.

As I 've been very successful with the finding of gold jewelry with small-coiled, high Khz detectors, I am considering a compadre.

Depth isn't all that matters when it comes to find tiny golden earrings, gold chains and the like. A 12Khz with 5,75' coil will do much better than a 10Khz with a 8x9 coil.

I was just fixin to say what a great design the Compadre is.

There may not be a better deal for such a great addition to your arsenal.

It will hit solid on a tiny gold chain without the catches on the ends of it.

I found one, and it was not a scratchy hit. It was solid. Not strong, but solid.

It was not wadded up and it was not deep. It's so light, I don't think it will sink.

And they say you can't get a good hit on small gold chains in the disc mode.

When I air tested this chain on the ground, it would hit solid, whether it was

spread out as in the photo, or wadded up.

No, they are very nice detectors! Several of my friends use them and have very good luck with them. I prefer the 9V battery on the uMAX detectors to the 8 AA that particular model uses. Depth wise the Tejon and Vaquero are probably similar. Good luck with your choice! TonyTX :detecting:

The MXT has been my main detector for several years. It is a very capable detector for coin shooting and relic hunting. I don't do any prospecting with it. I use the 5.3 Eclipse on it exclusively. With the stock 9.5 I've gotten coins down to 8 - 9 inches. It has a fairly accurate ID system and I really use the VDI number when detecting. You learn where most coins ring out as for as the VDI. It is not fool proof though and I listen to the tone. One thing is that it weighs over 4 lbs and after swinging it all day, you can get tired. I bought a good used Golden uMAX which is mainly a beep and dig machine with tone ID. I really love that detector. It has that famous Tesoro discrimination and it is very light at just over 2 lbs. The deepest coin so far has been about 6 inches and that was with a pretty strong signal. I'm not sure how deep this detector will go though. I like the tone ID and it does a good job. I've have three coils (well one is on the way): the stock coil - 9X8, 5.75, and 4". It seems to do well picking up very small items. I use it for coin shooting and playground hunting. I'm not certain how it would do in the relic mode but I guess it would be ok. I always wanted to try a Tesoro and the Golden seems to be a very good machine. It is my main detector at this point. I'm also considering picking up a Vaquero for relic hunting. The MXT and Tesoro models are very good detectors and they have a strong following. Several folks here use the Golden uMAX and they seem to have very good luck with them. HH TonyTX :detecting:

I like my Tejon and its one of my relic machines. I have both 5.75 coils (concentric/wide scan) in addition to the stock coil.
I have used it 4 or 5 times (guess) for coin shooting and it can do a fine job if set right. The dual discrimination can have a big advantage if used properly. But I usually prefer some of my other Tesoro machines for coin shooting. The Tejon can be chatty which is fine for me for relic. The Tejon can do a fine job for the lower conductive targets - I haven't tried it for any nugget shooting though as I would really prefer a dedicated gold machine for that purpose.
So I like my Tejon and it has it place and purpose - just can't say its the Best All Around Tesoro.
