woods hunt with silver

I've only been out four times since June, too hot and dry. These have all been hunts in the woods where the digging is a little easier. The first two were skunks, then I found a V-nickel, then today found a couple silvers, a 1945P war nickel and a 1951 Washington which is bent. These woods don't have much clad, but I haven't found many old coins, just a couple indians and a couple Barber dimes. Total hunt time was 2 hours. The Washington was shallow, only 3 or 4 inches.

Nice job Doug. Sometimes thinking outside the box will yield good results.
Did you find that this wood lot was something prior (old picnic grove etc) or was it a random hunt?
I agree this summer has been terrible for detecting (in my area) due the dry hot summer.

Thanks, Mike. This is woods in a large park. Many of the wooded areas were open picnic groves before, but were allowed to get overgrown, I would guess they were used until the early 60s, judging by the dates of the coins I find. The only bad part is lots of beer cans and other trash. Looks like we may get some rain this week.

the walk back to the car

After heavy rain last week, I went out this morning for 2 hours and 15 minutes at the same park, hunting in the woods. After two hours, I didn't have much; a NYC transit token from 1953-1970, and what looked like a dog license. It has the name of the park on it with a number, so I'm not showing the front. Maybe a key fob for park workers? I started walking back to the car on a old road and saw an area beside the road that looked good and gave it a few swings. Bam, a solid silver signal. Dug out the 1942 GW quarter, checked the hole again and found the 1937 buffalo nickel. I'm finding more silver quarters in these woods than silver dimes. Lots of trash not shown.

Something amazing about this hobby is I found the exact same type token in North Carolina. I did not know the dates so thank you for that.
