Excalibur coil change

Has anyone had any success changing the coil on a Excal? I have the 8" original coil on it now and would like to go bigger. I know the WOT 15" works, but I'm hoping to go a little smaller than that with less weight. Any suggestions or help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Cal

I think that I'm going to go with the Sunray S-12. I have e-mailed Ralph and he assures me that it will work if installed properly.
Can anyone with experience offer some suggestions?
Thanks,
Cal

I Love water hunting to the point I should be going with another bigger coil on the Excalibur. So I am going to get another Excalibur with the bigger coil. Then I will have the smaller eight and the bigger coil. Not really sure if I will go with the ten or WOT.

For The "Excalibur"

The WOT.. Covers Much ground.. The Sunray 12 Is and has been the Coil of Choice for many water hunters.. Mainly because it cuts through the water a little better...

Now, I've heard very good things about the S.E.F 15 X 12 coils.. that the Big K sells..

I've modded a couple of friends machines.. with the WOT & Sunray.. I haven't tried the SEF coil yet... But I know people who have..and they've used it on their "Excalibur's & Sov" and Love it...

I'm Thinking of Doing the SEF coil on my Excal as soon as I get it back from Minelab.... I'll keep my Excal II the way it is for now.. The Excal II coil Slices through the water Nicely..

I'm thinking rather then Hardwiring..I'll use IP68 Connectors.. this way I can HOT-SWAP between the S.E.F.... The Sunray S12, and the W.O.T... Then I'll Know which one I like the most...

The best advise that I can give about weight... Is Either Buy a Swingy thingy.. From "Doc" Or Harness from the "Big K"

I make my Own... they are better suited for my needs.. But.. It takes "All" of the weight Off of your arm"

All of it..........

If you don't use a Bungee or swingy thingy.... and you @#$%& about the weight of your machine.... it's your own Fault.....

For a few bucks.... it's well worth it... and you'll Thank Me and yourself after it's first use.... You'll thank "Doc" "Kellyco" Don't forget about the "Lord" for he comes first...

Does it really matter what order he said it in? It should only matter what emphasis he put in it!!! Main thing the Lord comes first, regardless of the order given.

Use at your own risk, this is not for everyone! If you don't have any experience with electronics and are not handy at repairing things I suggest that you send your unit to Minelab or take it to a repair facility.

Here's a snapshot of what I did, if you need more details I will post a detailed tutorial and pics of the procedures that I used. Hope this helps.

WARNING YOU RISK DAMAGING YOUR DETECTOR!

Before starting disconnect battery and ensure that all of the knobs are turned to their lowest setting (left) and pinpoint.

1. remove the rubber end cap covers, be careful not to stretch or cut the cover (I used a thin popsicle stick).
2. remove the set screws (2 on each end).

LAST CHANCE BEFORE YOU RISK DAMAGING YOUR DETECTOR OR CAUSING IT TO LEAK!

3. using something thin, wedge between the cap and the control tube (i used a putty knife) and twist gently all the way around until the end cap is separated from control tube.
4. disconnect the headphones (there is a small connector on the circuit board that is removed by pulling up).

5. gently remove circuit board (all knobs need to be turned all the way to the left).

6. using a soldering iron, remove the wires for the battery and the existing coil that you have (take a digital pic or write them down so you know where to put them back if you need to).
7. to remove the existing coil and wire you may need to cut the coil wire and drill out the wire if it's epoxied in (use caution here not to damage the end cap). notice in the picture that I drilled the hole large enough to accept a ziptie that I placed on the new cable to prevent it from slipping.

8. remove the rubber end cap and the strain relief water seal from the old coil wire and and place it on the new coil wire.
9 solder the battery and new coil to the terminal board (I found the schematic online for the WOT coil).

10. test the unit outside of the control tube to make sure you are successful (test in both pinpoint and discriminate).
11. epoxy the new wire in or use RTV silicone (prevent inadvertent leaks).
12. clean the o-ring and the inside of the control tube thoroughly and coat each with a thin layer of silicone grease(you can get this at a dive shop or local hardware store in the plumbing section).
13. gently assemble unit in reverse order (make sure none of the knobs have turned).

Note: extremely important to make sure that the o-ring and the tube are seated correctly, verify that the o-ring is shiny all the way around at both ends of the tube when installed, if not remove, clean and re-apply silicone grease and reassemble until you acquire the proper seal.

14. put a small amount of waterproof glue to hold the rubber end caps back on (these are mainly for cosmetic looks).

Congratulations! you now have a modified Excal.

One last thing you can do is replace those knobs (you can buy them in a two pack at your local electronics store for $2 a pair not the $15 that certain people try to sell 5 of them for).

1. gently pull up on the knob, if it won't pull off you can gently pry up from the underside.

2. install new knob with set screw (use caution not to over-tighten new knobs as they may crack).

Note: I used a small file to create a small flat spot on the post where the set screw makes contact to prevent the knobs from slipping.

Forgot to mention that it will void your warranty if anyone other than minelab performs this modification. :(
