I am putting the Explorer II on an X-Terra shaft. I ran into a couple things that I need help with. I took Charles' advise and took a picture of the insides before I cut wires. Thanks Charles! The problem is that the two main coil wires look the same except one has the black wire coiled around the outside. I cut apart the stock coil connector (molded rubber), but was not able to identify exactly which wire had the black wire running around it. I am pretty sure, but not positive, that the coil wire with the black wire around it goes to terminals 1 and 2 on the diagram below (diagram shows the terminal side where the wires get soldered). Can anyone confirm this, please?

Also when I cut apart the standard coil connector with the molded rubber, there was a metallic "sleeve" do-dad that the wires run through. It is like the one circled in the picture below, except larger. Should I put that on the coil wires when I reattach them to the coil plug? I am going to put the coil connector plug-in in the back of the control housing (lower right side).

To recap, here are my questions:
1. Where does the coil wire with the black wire coiled around hook-up to the connector?
2. Do I need to put the large metallic "sleeve" back on the coil wires?

i can not help you much,but i will share what little i know about wire.

for 2 years now i have tried to find just the wire...........coiltec and sunray will not sell any of it.......below is quote from coiltex.............must be some special stuff, but u can buy a 3ft coil extension cable from them and probably remove plugs and go from there......for my box set up, i did not need to do that.

back in 2004 when i started my first ever box project i got some help from Sam....minelab tech in vegas in those days.......really kewl guy, i will see if i can find that.

i broke the small wire u refer to once and had to solder it back to metal plug also........I CAN NOT FIND THE PIC RIGHT NOW, let me look more.

black wire was attached to metal plug.............mine broke and i had to solder it back

My black wire was attached to the back of the connector housing. It was soldered into where a tiny screw would normally hold the strain relief. I cut mine off while removing the molded rubber. Luckily the cut left some wire still there. You can see the housing I am talking about in your right hand picture. It is pushed up the wires. You can see the hole I am talking about at the extreme right of the connector housing. So your mystery of a way too short wire is solved. Now if only you had shown which wire had the black one wrapped around it... then I would be good.

I did get which wire is transmit and which is receive from your hand drawn plug conversion notes. Unfortunately I do not know which wire comes from which circuit. What I need to know is how to tell which white wire goes where.

first circuet board is 1,2 if you look on coil conector ,second board is 3,4again if you look at coil connector, which are with numbers. 1 shielding 2 core wire , 3 shielding 4 core wire, 1,2 is thicke cable , 3 4 thiner. 5 is empty, . black wire is just for connector mettal case. black tube put back on coil cables. in your modification you will have not much space inside original explorer box, take care in asembling .

You are right; the darn wires are a tiny bit different in size! And yes, there are little numbers on that plug! And the hookup you stated is exactly what I thought mine should be (but wasn't 100% sure). Thank you so much; you are the man, even though your avatar scares me, haha.
Now I feel much better about putting this back together!!!
